When Microsoft Edge will not download or install an update, work from the outside in: verify the network and Microsoft endpoints, run Windows compatibility and update diagnostics, retry the built-in update paths, then check storage, services, permissions, date and time. Restart Edge or Windows before clearing update data or reinstalling. Updating Edge keeps your favorites, passwords and settings, according to Microsoft.
Use this order to fix a stuck Edge update
The fastest path depends on what still works. If Edge opens, start with edge://settings/help. If Edge opens but cannot reach the update service, investigate the connection, VPN, proxy or firewall. If Windows Update is also failing, repair Windows Update first. If the browser cannot open or its files appear damaged, use the official installer.

1. Confirm that Edge can reach Microsoft
Test the connection before changing Edge
Open another working browser and load a few ordinary websites. If pages are slow or fail, restart the router and test again. When possible, connect the affected PC to a different working network, such as a phone hotspot. A different network separates an Edge problem from a local router, DNS or corporate-network problem.

Check VPN, proxy and enterprise firewall rules
A VPN can return HTTP 403 or route update traffic through a policy that rejects Microsoft’s updater. Disconnect the VPN for a test where permitted. On a managed device, do not bypass company controls; ask the administrator to check the policy instead.
Microsoft identifies these destinations for Edge updating and downloading:

Give the exact hostnames to the person managing the firewall, proxy, DNS filter or VPN. A broad “allow Microsoft” rule is less precise than permitting the documented destinations. If the administrator cannot allow them, the device may be intentionally prevented from updating.
Recognize a DNS-specific failure
Error 0x80072EE7 indicates that Edge could not resolve the address needed for a download. Verify that the network has working DNS, test another network, and ask the network administrator to check DNS filtering. Restarting the router can clear a temporary resolver problem, but it will not fix a policy that blocks the destination.
2. Run Microsoft’s Windows diagnostics
Program Compatibility troubleshooter on Windows 11
Microsoft directs Windows 11 users with Edge installation or update problems to the automated Program Compatibility troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for the Program Compatibility troubleshooter, and follow its prompts for the Edge installation or update issue.

On supported Windows versions that expose the classic troubleshooter, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, locate Program Compatibility Troubleshooter, select Run, and apply any recommended fix. The available labels can vary by Windows release.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter when Windows is involved
If Settings shows a pending or failed Windows update, open the same troubleshooting area and run Windows Update. Microsoft associates stuck Windows updates with incomplete updates, connection problems, corrupted update files, disabled services, permissions, incompatible drivers and insufficient storage. Let the troubleshooter finish, apply its recommendation, and restart if requested before trying Edge again.
Install pending Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update. Install available updates, restart Windows when prompted, and return to Edge after the restart. A second update cannot always proceed while Windows is waiting for a reboot or while another servicing operation is active.
3. Retry through the supported Edge update paths
Use Edge’s built-in update page
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Enter
edge://settings/helpin the address bar and press Enter. - Allow Edge to check for updates. Keep the window open while it checks.
- If Edge displays Restart, select it and let the browser relaunch.
- Open
edge://settings/helpagain and confirm the result.
Microsoft says Edge checks automatically, but you can manually check and install an update at any time. If the page reports that an update is unavailable because the device is managed, treat that as an organization-policy issue rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
Use Windows Update as a second route
Some Windows devices receive Edge updates through Settings > Windows Update. Install the Edge-related update if it appears, complete any required restart, and then check edge://settings/help. If Windows Update itself fails, stay with the Windows Update troubleshooting path instead of launching repeated Edge installers.

Use the official installer when Edge cannot update itself
If Edge cannot open, its update page repeatedly fails, or the installed files are damaged, download the current installer from www.microsoft.com/edge using a working browser. Run the downloaded installer with an account that is allowed to install software. Do not use an unverified mirror or an old installer copied from another computer.
4. Check local conditions that stop installation
Free disk space and operating-system compatibility
Confirm that the system drive has enough free space for the download, temporary extraction files and the installed browser. A nearly full drive can allow the download to start but fail during extraction or replacement of program files. Delete or move unnecessary files, empty the recycle bin, and retry after Windows reports usable space.
Also confirm that the operating system meets the current Edge requirements. If the device is on an unsupported Windows edition or an unusually old build, an installer may refuse to continue or the update channel may not offer a compatible package. The exact supported editions can change, so use the current Microsoft installer and the device’s Windows Update page rather than relying on an old compatibility list.
Check permissions and security controls
Error 0x80070005 means access was denied. Sign in with an account permitted to install software, or ask an administrator to perform the update. Review endpoint-security logs for a blocked Edge updater and confirm that the installer is not being prevented from writing to its program and update directories.
Do not broadly grant full control to every user or disable security permanently to “fix” an access-denied error. The safer remedy is to use the approved administrator account or have the security policy adjusted for the documented updater.

Verify Windows and Edge update services
- Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Locate Windows Update and check whether it is running. If it is stopped, use the organization’s normal procedure to start it.
- Locate Microsoft Edge Update Service and inspect its status and startup configuration.
- Retry the update after correcting a service that is disabled or stopped, provided you have permission to change it.
Error 0x80040154 points to a missing or disabled Edge update service. On a managed PC, the service may be controlled by policy; ask the administrator before changing its startup setting.
Correct date and time
Error 0x80072F8F is associated with an incorrect system date or time. Open Windows date and time settings, enable automatic time, and select Sync now. Retry after the clock synchronizes. Incorrect time can break the secure connection used to validate update traffic.
Make sure another update is not running
Close other installers and finish any pending Windows update. Error 0x80240016 means another update is in progress. Restart Windows, wait for the desktop to finish loading, and try Edge once rather than starting several installers simultaneously.

The code narrows the next step; it does not prove that only one component is responsible. For example, a permission error can be caused by endpoint security, and a download error can originate with a corporate proxy rather than the home network.
6. Clear stale update data only after the basic checks
Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance lists the local update directory as a place to clear stale update data:

Close every Edge window before working with this directory. Use the actual Windows user name in place of YourUsername. If Windows says a file is in use, restart the PC and try again before deleting anything. Keep a copy of the folder until the update succeeds if your organization’s policy permits it.
Do not confuse the update directory with your browser profile. The update directory contains updater data; deleting profile folders can remove local browser data. If you are unsure which files Microsoft’s current guidance covers, stop and use the official installer or ask an administrator.
7. Reinstall Edge when updating still fails
When reinstalling is justified
Reinstall when the browser cannot open, update files are missing or corrupt, the update service is absent, or the supported update paths continue to fail after network, Windows, permission and storage checks. Reinstalling is not the first response to a firewall block, DNS failure or organization policy; a fresh installer will encounter the same block.

Install from Microsoft’s official page
- Open a working browser and go to www.microsoft.com/edge.
- Download the installer appropriate for the Windows device.
- Close Edge and other installers.
- Run the installer and provide administrator approval if Windows requests it.
- Restart Windows if the installer or Windows requests a restart.
- Open Edge and visit
edge://settings/helpto verify the installed version and check once more.
Removing old installation files
Microsoft’s troubleshooting page also lists removing old installation files under:
C:Program Files (x86)MicrosoftEdge
Use care with this step. Paths, permissions and installed architectures can vary, and deleting the wrong directory can damage the installation or remove files needed by other components. Follow the current Microsoft procedure and use an administrator account; do not delete browser profile data as a substitute for removing old program files.
Will an update delete favorites, passwords or settings?
Microsoft states: “Your favorites, passwords, and settings are kept when you update Microsoft Edge.” That statement applies to updating Edge through its supported update process. A manual removal of program files is a different operation, so do not erase profile directories while troubleshooting. If the device is managed, confirm the organization’s backup or synchronization policy before any destructive step.

When an organization manages the computer
A company, school or government policy can control Edge updates, Windows Update, VPN routing, proxy access and service startup. In that situation, a failed update may be an intentional deferral or a blocked endpoint rather than a broken browser.

- Record the exact error code and the time it occurred.
- Tell the administrator whether the device was on VPN, a corporate network or a home network.
- Provide the documented endpoints
https://msedge.api.cdp.microsoft.comand*.dl.delivery.mp.microsoft.comfor firewall or proxy review. - Ask whether a restart, Windows update or maintenance window is pending.
- Do not remove policy-managed services or repeatedly install consumer copies over the managed deployment.
Final verification after the update
- Open Edge and go to
edge://settings/help. - Confirm that the page no longer reports a pending update or installation error.
- Open a normal website to verify connectivity after any VPN, proxy or firewall change.
- Check that favorites, saved passwords and settings are present after an update.
- If the same code returns, stop repeating the installer and use the code-specific path above or involve the device administrator.
