Microsoft Edge Project Phoenix explained: Which new UI and features actually shipped?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Project Phoenix was not a separate browser you could download. It was an internal Microsoft effort to rethink Edge around a Windows 11-style interface and stronger productivity features. Microsoft developed the work incrementally, so individual ideas—including rounded surfaces, Split screen and Workspaces—appeared in Edge without a single “Edge Phoenix” release.

What Project Phoenix was

Windows Central reported on January 26, 2023, that Phoenix was an internal Edge reimagining intended to distinguish Microsoft’s Chromium browser from Chrome and better match Windows 11’s visual language. The report described a collection of work in progress, with some pieces available in preview builds or behind feature flags, rather than a replacement browser with its own installer. Windows Central’s original report is the basis for the early feature list.

That distinction matters: Microsoft’s public announcements continued to call the product Microsoft Edge, not Microsoft Edge Phoenix. There is no established evidence of a unified, separately branded Phoenix launch.

What the redesign was meant to look like

Phoenix was associated with a more Windows 11-like browser frame:

  • Ergonomic: The height-adjustable monitor riser can raise a computer monitor, notebook, or any device by 4.5 inches, 5.3 inches, or 6.1 inches off the desk to create a comfortable viewing and sitting position which helps reduce stress on the neck and back
  • Ventilated: The computer stand has a large sturdy platform with vented holes, this stand will prevent overheating and keep the device running cool
  • Organization: The sleek modern black design complements any desk while adding extra space underneath the stand for storage
  • Easy Installation: Tools are not required for assembly of this computer accessories. All components fit together smoothly for fast setup to organize your desk quickly
  • Rounded tabs and rounded corners around browser content.
  • Clearer visual separation between the tab strip, address bar and webpage.
  • Translucent or Mica-style surfaces that respond to the Windows theme.
  • More fluid transitions and updated toolbar or tab organization.

Microsoft publicly discussed these design goals at Build 2023, describing rounded corners, translucent backgrounds, revised content containers and fluid animations alongside productivity and AI work. Microsoft’s Build 2023 Edge announcement confirmed the design direction, while coverage of that announcement documented the Mica and rounded-corner treatment. Neowin’s report

Visual changes are primarily cosmetic. Extra spacing or rounded containers can make Edge feel more integrated with Windows 11, but they may also reduce the amount of tab or page content visible at once.

The major Phoenix-associated features

Split screen

Split screen puts two webpages inside one Edge tab or window. Instead of opening two separate windows and arranging them with Windows Snap, you can compare pages, keep a reference beside a draft, or research while writing with one browser frame. Windows Central documented the hidden implementation in April 2023. Read the feature breakdown

Neowin reported Split screen reaching Edge’s stable channel on February 16, 2023. Stable-channel coverage Controls and availability can still differ by Edge build and rollout. A later Canary test added a vertical arrangement as well as the usual side-by-side layout; that report is historical and does not guarantee the same control in every current installation. Split screen can complicate navigation or session restoration after an update, so treat an unfamiliar layout as a build-specific behavior rather than proof that the entire Phoenix design has arrived.

Workspaces

Edge Workspaces group tabs into dedicated project windows—for example, one workspace for a client, a class or a trip. Microsoft’s April 5, 2023 preview also described collaborative Workspaces, where people could share a project’s set of websites and files. Microsoft’s Workspaces preview announcement

Workspaces are not screen sharing and do not automatically share all browser data between participants. The preview required a Microsoft account and Edge 111.0.1661.51 or later at that time; those historical requirements should not be assumed to be the current ones. Microsoft later said Workspaces were moving toward general availability as part of Edge’s broader productivity strategy. Build 2023 update

Tab Activity Center

The reported Tab Activity Center would have shown statistics and insights about browsing, conceptually similar to Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing. It was described as planned Phoenix work, not as a confirmed feature in every public Edge release. Do not treat screenshots or old flag guides as proof that it is currently available. Vertical tabs, Sidebar and AI

Phoenix was discussed alongside Edge’s existing or developing organization tools: vertical tabs for users with large tab collections, Sidebar applications, Collections and Workspaces. Microsoft also promoted Copilot and other AI-assisted browsing capabilities during the same period. These are parts of Edge’s wider product strategy, not proof that a single Phoenix package shipped.

Proposed Windows integration

The early report mentioned ideas such as using Edge as a broader Windows password-management surface and offering Edge-related choices during Windows’ out-of-box setup. Those were reported concepts, not a promise that every Windows installation would receive a Phoenix-specific setup flow or system-level integration. Windows Central’s report

What shipped, and what remains uncertain

Phoenix-associated idea Evidence and status Accurate description
Rounded tabs and Windows 11 styling Reported in the concept; related design work was publicly announced in 2023 Edge design direction tested or shipped in varying forms; availability depends on build
Mica and translucent surfaces Included in Microsoft’s public redesign messaging Confirmed design work, not a separate Phoenix edition
Split screen Tested and reported in the stable channel in 2023 A Phoenix-associated idea that became an Edge feature
Workspaces Public preview and later rollout announcements A real Edge feature, not evidence of a Phoenix browser release
Tab Activity Center Reported as planned or experimental Keep it qualified unless current Microsoft documentation confirms it
Windows setup and password integration Reported concepts Attribute them; do not present them as universally shipped
Complete Phoenix package No unified public launch established There was no separately downloadable “Edge Phoenix” product

Can you enable Phoenix today?

There is no Phoenix package to download. To see which related features your installation supports:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Select Settings and more (…) > Settings.
  3. Open About Microsoft Edge to check the installed version and update status.
  4. Review Appearance, System and performance and the relevant feature menus for controls available in that build.

Stable, Beta, Dev and Canary channels do not expose the same experiments. Canary or Dev can be useful for deliberate testing, but they are less predictable and may change or remove features. Historical coverage referenced flags such as edge://flags/#edge-split-screen and edge://flags/#edge-visual-rejuv-rounded-tabs; flags can be renamed, disabled or removed, so old instructions are not a current availability guarantee.

Microsoft’s general Edge guidance confirms that updates and settings are managed through the normal browser interface, while feature availability can vary by device, market and version. Update and settings guidance

How the related features affect everyday use

  • Split screen: Efficient for comparison and reference work, but navigation and restoration can feel different from two independent windows.
  • Workspaces: Useful for separating projects, although they can overlap with profiles, tab groups and multiple windows.
  • Vertical tabs: Give tab-heavy users more room for readable titles, at the cost of horizontal webpage space.
  • Sleeping Tabs: Pause inactive pages to reduce CPU and memory use; live dashboards, timers, media and web apps may need exclusions. Microsoft performance documentation
  • Startup boost: Keeps limited Edge processes running in the background to improve launch time, consuming some background resources. Microsoft Startup boost documentation
  • AI features: Availability depends on account, language, market, organization policy and Edge version; outputs also require normal privacy and accuracy judgment.

Why reports about Phoenix conflict

Early screenshots were internal concepts, while later articles often showed Canary builds or a single feature. Microsoft also changed parts of the larger UI effort; later reporting described specific redesign work as scrapped or altered, which does not establish that every Phoenix-associated feature was canceled. Windows Central’s later status report

Consequently, a rounded-tab screenshot, a Split screen demo or a Workspaces announcement should be read as evidence about one Edge feature or design iteration—not as proof of a finished Phoenix browser.

Bottom line

Phoenix was real as an internal Edge design and development program, but “Microsoft Edge Phoenix” is an inaccurate name for a standalone product. Its legacy is piecemeal: Windows 11-inspired visuals, Split screen, Workspaces and related productivity or AI work entered Edge at different times and with different availability. Use the features exposed by your current Edge build, and treat old mockups, flags and preview videos as historical rather than guaranteed roadmap promises.
