To turn an HTML document or webpage into a PNG in Microsoft Edge, open the page, press Ctrl+Shift+S, choose Capture full page, review the image, and save it. Edge captures content below the visible viewport, so you do not need to stitch multiple screenshots. For a chart, table, or form, choose Capture area instead.
Choose the right Edge capture mode
Edge’s Screenshot (formerly Web capture) has two useful scopes. The choice determines what appears in the PNG and how much cleanup you need afterward.
Capture full page
Use Capture full page when the PNG should contain the complete rendered document, including material that requires scrolling. Edge scrolls through the page as part of the capture and produces one image rather than separate viewport screenshots. This is suitable for an article, documentation page, invoice, landing page, or long HTML report.
Capture area
Use Capture area when only a portion belongs in the file. Drag around the chart, table, form, or other region after the overlay opens. The resulting PNG excludes the rest of the page, which is usually cleaner for sharing or inserting into a presentation.

Markup before saving
The Screenshot overlay can add pen or touch annotations before you copy or save the result. Markup is useful for pointing out a field or highlighting a figure, but it changes the image; make an unmarked capture first if you also need an archival copy.
Convert an HTML document to PNG in Edge
- Open the rendered document. Navigate to the webpage, or open a local HTML file in Edge. Wait until text, images, and fonts have finished rendering. If the page loads content as you scroll, allow that content to appear before starting the capture.
- Open Screenshot. Press Ctrl+Shift+S. You can also open the Edge menu and select Screenshot or Web capture; the wording depends on the Edge version and device.
- Select a scope. Choose Capture full page for the entire document, or Capture area and drag over a specific region.
- Review the result. Check the bottom of a long page, lazy-loaded images, fixed headers, and any content that appeared only after scrolling. If something is missing, close the preview, let the page finish loading, and capture again.
- Annotate only if needed. Use the pen or touch controls in the overlay to add marks. Skip this step for a clean conversion.
- Save or copy. Choose the save command to write the PNG to your chosen folder, or copy the capture to the clipboard for pasting into another application. Confirm the file extension and open the saved image to verify it.
Keyboard focus, menu names, and the exact overlay layout can vary by browser version, device type, and market. If Ctrl+Shift+S does not open Screenshot, use the Edge menu and look for Screenshot or Web capture.
Get a clean, reliable full-page PNG
Prepare the page before capturing
- Set the browser zoom and window width first. Responsive HTML may show a different layout at different widths.
- Dismiss dialogs that are part of the page unless they belong in the document. Cookie notices, newsletter prompts, and chat bubbles can cover content.
- Wait for images, charts, web fonts, and client-rendered sections to finish. A spinner visible at capture time may be saved as part of the PNG.
- For content loaded on scroll, scroll through the page once, then return to the top and start Capture full page. This gives lazy-loaded elements an opportunity to load.
Inspect common trouble spots
Long pages can expose layout bugs that are not obvious in the viewport. Look for a fixed navigation bar repeated over every section, columns that overflow horizontally, clipped shadows, and images that remain blank. A second capture after changing the window width or allowing more time to load often resolves these issues.
Preserve the original HTML separately
A PNG is a visual snapshot, not a semantic or editable copy of the document. Keep the source HTML and any associated assets when accessibility, text search, or later editing matters. Use the PNG for a visual record, thumbnail, report, or handoff.

PNG versus Edge’s Print workflow
Do not use Print when your immediate goal is a PNG. Pressing Ctrl+P, or choosing Settings and more > Print, opens print preview. Its controls—fit to printable area, actual or custom scale, headers and footers, and background graphics—are designed for paper and PDF layout. Print is the appropriate route when the deliverable is a PDF or a physical page; Screenshot is the direct visual-capture route for a PNG.

Print preview can still be useful as a diagnostic. If the print layout reveals clipped content or an unexpected scale, the same responsive behavior may affect a screenshot at that window width. It does not, however, document a direct HTML-to-PNG export.
Automating Edge-based conversion
For an occasional file, the Screenshot overlay is the simplest method. Automation is a different requirement: you need repeatable viewport settings, waiting rules, naming, retries, and a way to run without a person at the keyboard.
WebView2 limitations
Microsoft’s WebView2 APIs document ShowPrintUI, Print, PrintToPdf, and PrintToPdfStream. The documented print methods write the top-level document to PDF with custom print settings. The cited API documentation does not describe a direct HTML-to-PNG method. If your application is built on WebView2, plan on PDF output through those APIs or use a separate rendering-and-screenshot component for PNG output.
Managed computers
Organizations can control Screenshot with the WebCaptureEnabled policy, which enables the feature formerly called Web Capture. If the command is missing on a managed device, ask an administrator whether that policy is disabled. Edge policy documentation also includes print-related settings such as PrintPdfAsImageDefault; those settings affect printing, not the Screenshot PNG command.
When the built-in feature is not enough
Edge Screenshot is a manual, interactive tool. Consider an API when you need scheduled captures, hundreds of URLs, server-side execution, deterministic device settings, CSS or JavaScript injection, or a result that can be requested from a build pipeline. An API can also return a failure status instead of silently saving a blank or partially rendered image, provided the service exposes that information.

Troubleshooting Edge PNG captures
Ctrl+Shift+S does nothing
- Open the Edge menu and choose Screenshot or Web capture.
- On a managed computer, ask whether WebCaptureEnabled is disabled.
- Check that another application or extension is not intercepting the shortcut.
The PNG stops before the bottom
- Use Capture full page, not Capture area.
- Scroll through the page once so lazy content loads, return to the top, and recapture.
- Wait for network activity, animations, and client-side rendering to finish.
Images or fonts are missing
- Reload and wait for the assets to finish.
- Check whether an extension, privacy setting, or authentication wall blocks the asset request.
- Keep the source page open and verify the image is visible before starting Screenshot.
A cookie notice, popup, or chat bubble covers the content
Close or accept the overlay before capturing. If it cannot be dismissed reliably across many pages, use an API with consent and overlay-removal controls such as ScreenshotNeo.

The result is blurry or unexpectedly narrow
Set the desired window width and zoom before capture. Responsive breakpoints change the layout, while device-pixel scaling affects apparent sharpness. For repeatable high-density output, an API that exposes viewport and retina settings is easier to control.
The page requires sign-in
Edge Screenshot captures what the current browser session can see. Sign in first and confirm the protected content is rendered. Do not share credentials in a screenshot or expose private pages through a public link.

Can Edge save only one element as PNG?
Edge’s documented selection is a rectangular Capture area. It does not provide a CSS-selector field in the Screenshot overlay. For selector-based element capture, use a rendering API or automation tool.
Does Edge create a transparent PNG?
The built-in Screenshot workflow captures the rendered page appearance. The documented feature does not provide a transparent-background control.

Can I capture a local HTML file?
Yes. Open the file in Edge, allow its local assets to render, and use the same Screenshot steps. Relative files that are unavailable or blocked will appear missing in the image.

Is a screenshot accessible like HTML?
No. A PNG contains pixels, not selectable text structure, links, headings, or alternate text. Provide the original HTML or a text-based document alongside it when accessibility matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the PNG filename from Edge’s overlay?
The save dialog lets you choose the destination and filename presented by your operating system. Rename the file there if you need a project-specific convention.
Will an animated page capture every frame?
No. Screenshot records the rendered state at capture time. Pause or wait for the desired state before saving.
