1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a Dynamics 365 partner when you need a tailored implementation, industry expertise, migration or integration work, user training, or continuing administration. Choose Microsoft’s online route when your team already knows the exact product and licenses and can configure, deploy, and support the environment itself. Microsoft Sales is a separate, account-oriented route for eligible managed accounts and should not be assumed to mean the same thing as buying online.
The right answer depends on the Dynamics 365 application, deployment type, geography, contract, and the work that must happen after checkout. Microsoft’s general guide describes channel roles, not a guaranteed price or service level for every provider. Compare the complete written offer—licenses, implementation, support, permissions, renewals, and total cost—before you authorize a purchase.

The short answer: match the buying route to the work you need done
Microsoft’s general Dynamics 365 buying guidance presents three routes: Microsoft Partners, Microsoft Sales, and Microsoft Online. The guide characterizes them this way: partners provide industry-specific support and customized implementation; Microsoft Sales provides account-specific support and implementation when requested; and online purchasing is paired with product-specific support and implementation managed independently by the customer. All three are described as offering monthly, annual, and multi-year subscription terms, although the exact options depend on the product, region, and agreement.
That makes the decision operational rather than ideological. If your organization can run discovery, configure security and workflows, migrate data, integrate other systems, test, train users, and operate the service, buying online may be efficient. If any of those activities require outside expertise, a partner can reduce execution risk—but only if its statement of work, support commitments, and access model are specific enough to evaluate.

What “Microsoft direct” can mean
The phrase “Microsoft direct” is ambiguous. In practice, it can refer to two different interactions:
- Microsoft Online: You select an eligible license through an online commerce experience and manage implementation yourself. Microsoft describes support on this route as product-specific.
- Microsoft Sales: You work with Microsoft’s sales organization about use cases, licensing, or pricing. Microsoft describes this route as account-specific and says implementation is available upon request. The guide identifies it for managed accounts, so eligibility must be confirmed.
A direct conversation with a Microsoft salesperson is therefore not proof that Microsoft will perform a full deployment, data migration, or managed-service operation. Ask exactly what assistance is included, who performs it, and whether it is part of the commercial agreement.

| Route | Microsoft’s general description | Likely fit | Verify before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Partner | Industry-specific support; customized implementation; available to all customers. | A tailored solution, complex rollout, industry processes, integrations, migration, training, or ongoing administration. | Experience with the exact Dynamics 365 application and deployment type; named deliverables; support scope; fees; delegated permissions; references. |
| Microsoft Sales | Account-specific support; implementation available upon request; route described for managed accounts. | An organization that wants to discuss requirements or commercial terms with Microsoft through an account relationship. | Whether your account qualifies; what implementation help actually includes; who owns configuration and support after the sale. |
| Microsoft Online | Product-specific support; implementation managed independently by the customer; available to all customers where the license is offered online. | A prepared team buying a known configuration and capable of implementing and operating it internally. | Availability of the exact license in your geography; billing and renewal terms; support boundaries; internal ownership of rollout and administration. |
These descriptions come from Microsoft’s general buying guide and should not be read as a promise about an individual partner contract or a particular product’s checkout options.
Choose a partner when the project is more than a license transaction
You need a designed, not merely activated, solution
Dynamics 365 can require decisions about business processes, roles, data models, automations, reporting, integrations, and environment strategy. A partner is the route Microsoft positions for a “fully managed and tailored” solution. That does not mean every partner performs every task. Your proposal should identify discovery, architecture, configuration, customization, testing, data migration, training, go-live support, and post-launch administration as separate deliverables.
Your industry has specialized controls or workflows
Industry familiarity can shorten requirements work and expose regulatory, operational, or reporting needs that a generic deployment may miss. Ask for examples involving the same Dynamics 365 application, similar user roles, comparable transaction volume, and the same deployment type. A partner that has only implemented another application in the product family may not have the relevant experience.
You lack implementation capacity or want an accountable delivery lead
An internal team may understand the business but still lack time for configuration, testing, cutover planning, and user enablement. A partner can provide project management and a single escalation point. Put boundaries around that accountability: identify the person responsible for each workstream, the acceptance criteria, the assumptions about your staff, and the process for handling change requests.

You need continuing administration
Some organizations want a provider to handle user and role changes, environment maintenance, release preparation, monitoring, and first-line application support. Treat this as a managed service separate from implementation. The contract should specify hours, response targets, included request types, escalation, emergency handling, and termination or transition assistance.
Choose Microsoft Online when your team can own implementation
You already know the product and license mix
Online purchase is most straightforward when the business requirements are settled and the exact application, license type, user quantity, and geography are known. Your team should be able to confirm prerequisites, configure the tenant and environments, assign roles, connect required systems, migrate or import data, test business processes, and train users without relying on an outside implementer.
You want direct control of configuration and timing
Self-managed implementation avoids adding a consulting workstream and can let an experienced team move at its own pace. It also means your organization owns the consequences of incomplete requirements, weak testing, incorrect permissions, and an under-planned cutover. Product support can answer product questions, but it is not automatically a substitute for project delivery or business-process design.
You have a defined internal support model
Before buying online, name the team that will handle user provisioning, incident triage, integrations, data quality, release changes, and vendor escalation. If those responsibilities have no owner, the apparent simplicity of online checkout can become an operational gap.
Product rules can override the general channel comparison
Dynamics 365 is a family of applications, and each product’s purchase instructions control what is actually available.
Dynamics 365 Sales
Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 Sales purchasing guidance documents direct purchase, purchase through Microsoft 365, and purchase through an authorized partner. It notes that some licenses require contacting a Microsoft representative. It also states that Microsoft Relationship Sales is not available for direct purchase. Confirm the exact Sales license and transaction path for your country before assuming that an online button will appear.
Finance + Operations
For Finance + Operations, Microsoft’s “Before you buy” guidance lists cloud purchases through a Cloud Solution Provider, partner purchase using volume licensing, and partner purchase for on-premises deployments. It states that Finance + Operations on-premises must be purchased through a partner. The same guidance says organizations with 250 or more Dynamics 365 users might be interested in volume licensing. That threshold is a reason to examine the applicable agreement; it is not a promise that your organization qualifies or will pay less.

Cloud Solution Provider arrangements
Microsoft’s Cloud Solution Provider program overview, updated May 18, 2026, describes the CSP model and its requirements. Eligibility, billing responsibility, available offers, and partner obligations can change by region and agreement. Do not infer Dynamics 365 terms from a different product’s CSP page without checking the application-specific instructions.
Direct and partner relationships can coexist
A channel choice does not always require moving every subscription to one route. Microsoft documents partner relationships for existing subscriptions, and its Microsoft 365 guidance explains that a customer can buy through a Cloud Solution Provider and directly from Microsoft. That Microsoft 365 example is not a Dynamics 365 contractual rule, but it demonstrates why you should map the actual subscriptions and administrative responsibilities instead of assuming that one seller must control everything.
If you retain an existing subscription while engaging a partner, document which organization handles billing, licensing changes, technical support, configuration, and escalations. Microsoft’s instructions for adding a Partner of Record are available in this Microsoft Learn article. A Partner of Record entry should not be confused with a complete implementation or managed-services commitment.
Compare the complete arrangement, not the checkout price
Request a written comparison from Microsoft, a partner, or both. Every quote should describe the same quantity, term, scope, and service assumptions so that a lower subscription line is not being compared with a higher level of included work.
| Area | Questions your comparison must answer |
|---|---|
| Product and licensing | Which Dynamics 365 application, edition, license type, user quantity, environment, and geography are included? Are there prerequisite or attach licenses? |
| Term and billing | Is the subscription monthly, annual, or multi-year? What is the billing cadence, renewal behavior, notice period, and treatment of price changes? |
| Implementation | Who performs discovery, configuration, customization, data migration, integration, testing, training, cutover, and hypercare? What is explicitly out of scope? |
| Support | Who receives the first incident, during which hours, with what response targets and escalation path? Are application support and infrastructure support handled by the same organization? |
| Administration | Who manages users, security roles, environments, updates, integrations, and routine changes after go-live? |
| Access and security | What tenant or administrative access is requested, for which roles, for how long, and how will it be reviewed or removed? |
| Commercial total | What is the recurring subscription cost plus one-time implementation, migration, training, support, and any change-order charges? |
How to compare cost fairly
There is no evidenced universal price winner between direct and partner channels. Microsoft’s general guide lists monthly, annual, and multi-year terms for all three routes, but it does not establish that one route is cheaper. A partner may add implementation and support fees while reducing internal labor; an online purchase may show a lower initial transaction while leaving your organization to fund the entire rollout.
Ask for current quotes using identical application, license, user, term, and geography assumptions. Separate the following totals:
- Recurring licensing: subscription charges, billing cadence, renewal terms, and any volume agreement.
- One-time delivery: discovery, configuration, customization, data migration, integration, testing, training, and cutover.
- Ongoing service: administration, user support, monitoring, release preparation, and escalation.
- Internal effort: estimated staff time for requirements, testing, data preparation, training, and operational ownership.
Do not treat a promotional, regional, or agreement-specific figure as a general market price. The cited guidance does not publish a comparable direct-versus-partner price table, so the only defensible comparison is a current, like-for-like quote.

Implementation and support are separate decisions
The purchase channel identifies how you acquire the service; it does not by itself define the quality or scope of implementation. Microsoft’s guide uses broad categories—industry-specific partner support, account-specific Microsoft Sales support, and product-specific online support. Your agreement must define the practical details.
Questions about implementation
- Who owns the solution design and approves requirements?
- Which integrations and data sources are included, and what data cleansing is your team expected to perform?
- How many test cycles and user-acceptance sessions are planned?
- What constitutes go-live acceptance, and what happens if a milestone is missed?
- How are customizations documented and transferred to your administrators?
Questions about support
- What hours and time zone apply?
- What are the response and resolution targets for severity levels?
- Who owns an incident that crosses application, identity, integration, or licensing boundaries?
- Is post-go-live hypercare included, and for how long?
- Can you exit the service and retain the documentation, configurations, and administrative control needed to operate independently?
How to evaluate a Dynamics 365 partner
- Define the workload before interviewing providers. List the application, deployment type, business processes, integrations, data sources, user groups, geography, target date, and expected support model.
- Verify relevant delivery experience. Ask for evidence involving the same application and deployment type, not merely another Microsoft product. Request references that resemble your complexity and industry.
- Require a work-breakdown statement. Make discovery, architecture, configuration, customization, migration, testing, training, cutover, documentation, and post-launch support visible line items.
- Review assumptions and exclusions. Identify what your staff must provide, which data preparation is excluded, how integrations are priced, and when a change request becomes billable.
- Test the support handoff. Confirm who answers first, how Microsoft escalation is handled, and whether the implementation team remains available after launch.
- Review access before signing. Ask for the exact administrative roles, duration, approval process, auditability, and removal procedure. Least-permissive access should be the default.
- Compare the total commercial picture. Put the partner’s recurring and one-time charges beside a direct quote and your internal labor estimate. Compare equal scope rather than headline license prices.
Microsoft Learn explains how to find and establish relationships with Microsoft-certified solution providers. Certification or directory presence is a starting point, not proof that a provider is suitable for your application or project.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Control delegated administration and tenant access
A partner may need administrative access to deliver agreed work. Microsoft Learn states that granular delegated administrator privileges (GDAP) allow partners to complete tasks in the admin center without global administrator permission. Use that capability to narrow access rather than granting broad rights by default.
- Map each task to the least-privileged role that can perform it.
- Approve access for named personnel or a defined provider team, not an undefined organization-wide entitlement.
- Set an expiration or review date for project access and remove roles that are no longer needed.
- Record who approved access, what was changed, and how incidents are audited.
- Include access revocation and knowledge transfer in the exit plan.
Do not authorize delegated permissions until the statement of work explains why they are needed. A partner relationship is a governance decision as well as a purchasing decision.
Practical buying procedures
If you plan to buy online
- Identify the exact Dynamics 365 application, edition, license type, user count, and country or region.
- Check the product’s purchasing documentation and confirm that the selected offer is available for online purchase.
- List prerequisites, security roles, integrations, data migration tasks, and internal owners before checkout.
- Confirm subscription duration, billing cadence, renewal terms, and support boundaries.
- Build and test the environment, migrate or import data, train users, and document operational procedures.
- Assign a team for ongoing administration and escalation after launch.
If you plan to use Microsoft Sales
- Confirm that your organization and account qualify for the Microsoft Sales route.
- Provide a written use-case, user-count, geography, term, deployment, and implementation brief.
- Ask for a line-by-line description of any implementation assistance available upon request.
- Clarify whether Microsoft, your staff, or a partner performs configuration, migration, integration, training, and support.
- Review the commercial agreement for renewal, escalation, service ownership, and any work not included in the license transaction.
If you plan to use a partner
- Use Microsoft’s partner resources to identify providers with relevant application and industry experience.
- Issue the same requirements and scope to multiple candidates so proposals are comparable.
- Validate the delivery team, references, assumptions, support model, and total cost.
- Negotiate the statement of work, acceptance criteria, change control, security access, and transition terms.
- Authorize only the delegated roles required for the agreed tasks, then review them throughout the project.
Common situations and the most defensible route
| Situation | Starting route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A small, experienced internal team needs a known application and standard setup. | Microsoft Online | The team can own configuration, testing, rollout, and support without external delivery. |
| A regulated or industry-specific operation needs custom processes and integrations. | Qualified partner | Industry knowledge and a defined implementation team are more important than a simple checkout. |
| A large organization wants to discuss licensing and account-specific commercial terms. | Microsoft Sales, possibly alongside a partner | Microsoft identifies Sales as the managed-account route; implementation responsibilities still need to be assigned. |
| Finance + Operations on-premises deployment. | Partner purchase | Microsoft states that this deployment must be purchased through a partner. |
| Existing subscriptions with a new provider for administration. | Documented partner relationship | Keep billing, support, permissions, and ownership explicit rather than assuming every subscription must move. |
Pitfalls that produce expensive surprises
Comparing license prices without delivery scope
A direct quote and a partner quote may describe different amounts of work. Rebuild both offers around the same users, term, implementation tasks, support hours, and internal responsibilities.
Assuming “Microsoft direct” means Microsoft will implement everything
Online buying is paired with independently managed implementation, while Microsoft Sales implementation is described as available upon request. Obtain a written scope instead of relying on the channel label.

Where FastTrack fits
Microsoft describes FastTrack for Dynamics 365 as a customer-success service offering guidance on best practices and rollout planning, plus resources for enabling users and expanding capabilities. Its availability and scope should be verified for your product and organization. The existence of FastTrack does not establish that a partner is unnecessary or that every customer receives identical assistance; treat it as a potential planning resource while assigning clear ownership for delivery.
Final decision framework
Select Microsoft Online when you can independently manage the entire implementation and want product-specific support. Select Microsoft Sales when your managed-account relationship requires a Microsoft-led commercial discussion, but insist on a precise description of any implementation assistance. Select a Dynamics 365 partner when you need tailored design, industry expertise, migration, integration, training, or ongoing administration—and choose only a provider whose scope, support terms, security access, and total price are documented.
The safest decision is not the channel with the lowest visible subscription line. It is the arrangement that leaves no ambiguity about what you are buying, who delivers the work, who supports users, how access is controlled, and what the service will cost over the full term.
