For most Windows 11 home users who browse, work and install software cautiously, Microsoft Defender is a credible baseline rather than a token protection layer. Independent 2026 tests put it close to leading paid products, with one round giving it perfect scores and another showing only a small gap to a competing engine. A third-party suite becomes sensible when you need features such as identity monitoring, a bundled VPN, broader support or controls that Defender does not provide.
There is no universal winner. Test results depend on the threat set, dates, default settings and hardware. Your decision should weigh protection, false alarms, performance, features, cost, compatibility and support together.

What you are comparing
Microsoft Defender Antivirus
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the real-time malware protection component built into Windows 11. It updates through Windows and Microsoft security services, scans files and processes, and exposes controls in the Windows Security app. Because it is included with the operating system, there is no separate license or installer to maintain for a normal personal Windows 11 installation.
Defender is not the same product as Microsoft Defender for Endpoint. The independent results discussed here concern the consumer antivirus on Windows 11, not the enterprise service with centralized administration, incident response and security-operations features.

Third-party antivirus suites
A third-party product supplies its own scanning engine and real-time components. Depending on the edition, it may add web and email filtering, ransomware controls, parental controls, password or identity monitoring, a virtual private network, device management and human support. Those additions can be valuable, but their presence does not prove that the underlying malware engine is categorically more accurate than Defender.
Do not assume two full real-time antivirus engines should run together. Product-specific coexistence behavior was not established for this comparison. If you install or remove a suite, follow the current instructions from that vendor and confirm which product is active in Windows Security.
What the latest independent tests show
Two laboratories produced useful but non-interchangeable evidence in 2026. The scores below describe particular test rounds, not a permanent ranking or a guarantee for your PC.

| AV-TEST, Windows 11, April 2026 | 6/6 protection; 6/6 performance; 6/6 usability | Individual rival scores vary by product. | Consumer Windows 11 comparison. A full score in this round shows strong protection and low measured impact under AV-TEST’s conditions. |
| AV-TEST, Windows 11, July–August 2026 | 6/6 protection; 5.5/6 performance; 6/6 usability. Displayed real-world and reference-set protection outcomes were both 100%. | Results for other tested products must be read from the same round; figures from another period are not directly interchangeable. | Defender version 4.18 on Windows 11 Professional 64-bit, default settings and current public software. |
| AV-Comparatives Malware Protection Test, March 2026 | 99.93% online protection; three false alarms | Bitdefender: 99.94% online protection; four false alarms | 10,000 malware samples on up-to-date Windows 11 64-bit systems with default settings. The 0.01 percentage-point difference is effectively a near tie; false alarms also matter. |
| AV-Comparatives Real-World Protection Test, February–May 2026 | 99.0% | Bitdefender: 99.5%; Kaspersky: 99.8% | 400 cases representing a different threat set and period from the March malware test. A higher score in this round does not establish a universal winner. |
AV-TEST’s April result gave Defender full marks in all three categories. In the July–August round, protection and usability remained perfect while performance was 5.5/6. AV-Comparatives found Defender and Bitdefender separated by only 0.01 percentage points in its March malware test, then placed Microsoft below both Bitdefender and Kaspersky in its February–May real-world test. These are not contradictions: they are measurements of different samples and procedures.
Why test percentages cannot answer the whole question
Real-world protection versus malware protection
A real-world protection test follows scenarios that resemble attacks encountered while browsing or opening files, including the laboratory’s chosen web locations and delivery methods. A malware protection test concentrates on a defined collection of malicious samples and checks whether products prevent execution, remediate the system or otherwise block compromise. A reference set is a separate collection used by AV-TEST to verify known threats. A percentage from one design cannot be substituted for a percentage from another.

False positives
A false alarm occurs when security software blocks or warns about a legitimate file or website. In the March AV-Comparatives test, Defender produced three false alarms and Bitdefender four. A lower count can mean fewer interruptions, but the severity and recoverability of each warning matter more than a single count. A tool that blocks a business application you depend on may be more disruptive than one that flags an obscure file you never use.
Performance impact
Laboratories measure operations such as launching programs, copying files, installing software and browsing under controlled conditions. AV-Comparatives cautions that its performance results indicate impact only under specified test conditions; they cannot predict every individual PC. Older processors, slow hard drives, limited memory, gaming workloads and large development trees can produce a different experience from a modern test system.

Usability and recovery
Usability scores include factors such as understandable warnings and successful handling of harmless software. In daily use, also consider whether you can find a quarantine item, restore a false positive, schedule scans and obtain help. A product with a marginally higher detection score may be a poor choice if its alerts are confusing or its exclusions are difficult to manage.
When Microsoft Defender is usually enough
Defender is a reasonable default for a home user when all of these statements are broadly true:
- Your computer runs a supported Windows 11 edition and receives Windows and security updates.
- You use a standard account for everyday work where practical, download software from reputable publishers and avoid pirated or deliberately modified installers.
- You do not need a bundled VPN, identity-monitoring service, parental controls or a single support desk for several device types.
- You can recognize unexpected attachments, fake update prompts and credential-phishing pages, and you use multifactor authentication on important accounts.
- Your PC has no unusual compatibility requirement that a particular third-party suite is known to solve.
That conclusion does not mean Defender blocks every future threat. It means the available 2026 evidence shows a serious baseline for straightforward use, without requiring an additional subscription solely for the word “antivirus.”

When a third-party suite can be worth choosing
You need bundled security services
AV-Comparatives specifically notes that third-party tools can add identity monitoring or built-in VPNs. Those services may be useful if you would otherwise buy and configure them separately. Check what the plan actually covers: identity alerts can differ by country, and a VPN allowance may have data or server restrictions.
You manage several people or devices
A paid suite may offer one dashboard, cross-platform licenses, parental controls or centralized notifications. Confirm that the subscription covers the operating systems and number of devices in your household; do not infer coverage from the brand name alone.
You want dedicated support or policy controls
Some users value telephone or chat support, clearer ransomware exclusions, application-control policies or a vendor’s cleanup assistance. Compare the support hours, response channels and renewal terms before paying. These are service and management advantages, not proof of a better detection engine.
Your own testing shows a problem
If Defender repeatedly interferes with a legitimate workload, causes unacceptable slowdowns or lacks a control you require, trial a reputable alternative under its published terms. Measure the tasks that matter to you rather than relying on a benchmark from another computer.
A practical decision process
- Define the risk and the missing capability. Write down whether your concern is malware detection, phishing, ransomware, account theft, family controls, privacy, performance or support. “More protection” is too vague to select a product.
- Check the Windows baseline. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Confirm that real-time protection is enabled, security intelligence is current and no warning requires action. Labels can vary slightly by Windows 11 update.
- Review independent tests from the same period. Match the operating system, product edition, default or customized settings, sample set and test dates. Do not compare Defender’s 99.0% in AV-Comparatives’ February–May real-world round with Bitdefender’s 99.94% in the separate March malware round as if they were one contest.
- Check false alarms and performance. Look beyond the headline protection percentage. Read how many false positives were recorded and whether the laboratory describes the performance result as a controlled indication rather than a prediction for every PC.
- Price the features you will use. Compare the recurring subscription, device count, supported platforms, data limits, renewal price and cancellation policy. The tests cited here do not establish current retail pricing, so verify the terms at the time of purchase.
- Choose one active real-time engine. Before installing another suite, read its current installation guidance and determine how it handles existing Windows protection. Avoid assuming that running both full engines improves security.
- Reassess after normal use. For at least several days, check application launch times, game or creative workloads, battery life, alerts and access to legitimate files. Keep the product that solves your defined problem with the least disruption.
How to verify and maintain Defender
Check status and update protection
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection and read the current protection and security-intelligence status.
- Choose Protection updates, then Check for updates if an update is offered.
- Return to Virus & threat protection and run a Quick scan when you need a fast check. Use Scan options for a full or custom scan when the situation warrants it.
Investigate a warning safely
- Open Protection history and record the detection name, affected path and action taken.
- Do not restore a quarantined file merely because you recognize its filename. Verify the publisher and obtain a fresh copy from the official source first.
- Use exclusions sparingly. An exclusion removes a location or file from a protection check; it should not be a blanket fix for an untrusted download.
Reduce the attacks Defender cannot solve by itself
Keep Windows, browsers and commonly exploited applications patched; use multifactor authentication; back up important files to a location that malware cannot continuously rewrite; and treat unexpected links, invoices and “urgent” update prompts as hostile until verified. Antivirus results do not replace these controls.

How to evaluate and switch to a third-party product
- Read the edition details. Identify exactly which plan provides the features you want, its device and platform limits, and whether identity or VPN functions are available in your country.
- Download only from the vendor’s official channel. Avoid repackaged installers and search advertisements that imitate legitimate download pages.
- Save work and create a recovery option. Keep current backups and note how to reach Windows Safe Mode or the vendor’s cleanup utility before changing security software.
- Follow the installer’s coexistence instructions. The installer may configure Windows Security automatically, but confirm the resulting active provider rather than guessing.
- Run updates and a baseline scan. Let the new product update its signatures and components before judging alerts or performance.
- Remove it cleanly if it is not suitable. Use Windows’ installed-app removal or the vendor’s official removal tool, restart when requested, and verify that a real-time provider is active afterward.
Because current coexistence behavior varies by product and edition, these steps deliberately avoid promising that Defender will remain active, become passive or disappear in a particular way. The vendor’s current documentation is authoritative for that transition.
Decision table for common Windows 11 users
| User situation | Starting choice | Reason to reconsider |
|---|---|---|
| Web, office, streaming and occasional downloads; no special services needed | Microsoft Defender | A concrete need for support, identity monitoring, VPN access or another control. |
| Family requiring parental controls and one dashboard | Evaluate a suite that explicitly includes those controls | Country, device-count or platform limits make the advertised plan unsuitable. |
| Older or low-powered PC | Start with Defender and measure real workloads | Observed slowdowns persist, or a tested alternative is demonstrably lighter on that hardware. |
| Frequent high-risk downloads, exposed services or sensitive work | Use layered practices and consider a suite for needed controls | A subscription is being bought only for a marketing score without improving your actual setup. |
| User who wants a VPN or identity alerts included | Compare third-party bundles on those features first | The service is limited in your region or duplicates a service you already trust. |
Limits of the evidence
- The AV-TEST figures are consumer Windows 11 results for the listed Defender product and versions. They do not evaluate enterprise Defender for Endpoint.
- The March AV-Comparatives malware test used default settings on up-to-date Windows 11 64-bit systems and 10,000 samples; your settings, software and threat exposure can differ.
- The February–May AV-Comparatives real-world test covered 400 cases in a different period and design. Its percentages cannot be merged mathematically with the March malware test.
- Laboratory scores are snapshots. They cannot guarantee protection against every threat or predict every individual’s false alarms and system impact.
- No hands-on test of a particular computer is represented here. Use your own workload and the features you actually need to make the final choice.
Frequently asked questions
Does a perfect AV-TEST score prove Defender is the best antivirus?
No. The April 2026 round gave Defender 6/6 in protection, performance and usability, and the July–August round gave it 6/6 protection and usability with 5.5/6 performance. Those are excellent results for those rounds, not a permanent ranking across every threat and computer.
Why did Microsoft trail Bitdefender and Kaspersky in another test?
AV-Comparatives’ February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test used 400 cases and produced 99.0% for Microsoft, 99.5% for Bitdefender and 99.8% for Kaspersky. Its March Malware Protection Test used 10,000 samples and put Microsoft at 99.93% and Bitdefender at 99.94%. Different case sets, dates and procedures naturally produce different orderings.
Are third-party antivirus programs safer because they cost money?
Price does not establish detection quality. A paid suite can justify itself through support, identity monitoring, a VPN, family controls or management features you will actually use. If none of those solve a real need, Defender’s built-in baseline may be the more sensible choice.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I keep Defender and another antivirus running at the same time?
Do not assume that two full real-time engines should run concurrently. Coexistence behavior is product-specific. Follow the installing vendor’s current guidance and verify the active protection provider in Windows Security.
Best Value
What should I do if Defender blocks a safe program?
Open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection > Protection history, inspect the detection and verify the program’s publisher and download source. Restore or allow it only after that verification, and prefer a narrowly scoped exclusion over disabling protection globally.
