Microsoft Copilot was available through WhatsApp, but it is no longer operating. Microsoft ended the integration on January 15, 2026, after saying WhatsApp platform-policy changes prohibited large-language-model chatbots. Anyone looking for Copilot now should use Microsoft’s web or app-based services instead.
What Copilot on WhatsApp was
Copilot on WhatsApp was a chatbot integration, not a Microsoft feature embedded into WhatsApp’s menus. Users opened a Copilot conversation in WhatsApp and exchanged messages with Microsoft’s AI companion from the same app they used for ordinary chats. Microsoft describes the service as launching in late 2024.

The appeal was convenience: no separate AI application was required, and casual users could ask questions, request writing help, or continue a conversation in a familiar messaging workflow. The third-party channel did not necessarily expose every capability available in standalone Copilot, and availability could vary by region, account, service capacity, and product version.
When did the WhatsApp service end?
Microsoft says access ended on January 15, 2026. Its explanation was that WhatsApp updated platform policies to prohibit LLM chatbots. Could Copilot generate AI images?
Microsoft’s current Copilot documentation confirms that the standalone product can create an image from a text prompt and transform an uploaded image. Generation can take a few minutes, particularly with the latest model. The support guide is available at Microsoft’s Copilot image-generation documentation.
The exact feature set of the discontinued WhatsApp version is less certain. Contemporaneous descriptions presented the WhatsApp integration as an AI companion, while current first-party pages do not preserve a complete WhatsApp-specific capability list. It is therefore safer to say that Copilot supported image generation generally, and to treat claims about a particular WhatsApp image workflow as historical reports rather than a currently documented feature.
How image generation works in current Copilot
For better results, describe the subject, setting, visual style, mood, lighting, composition, and intended format. For edits, state the precise change while identifying what must remain unchanged.

Only upload photographs or artwork you own or are licensed to use. Microsoft places responsibility for copyright, privacy, publicity, and other rights on the person uploading the image.
How people used it when it was active
The original onboarding details are no longer maintained on Microsoft’s current pages, so there is no reliable current phone number, QR code, or “start chat” procedure to reproduce. At a high level, the historical interaction was:
- Open the Copilot contact or integration in WhatsApp.
- Send a text request and continue by replying to the returned messages.
- If image generation was available in that account or region, describe the desired image in the chat and receive the result there.
These steps are historical only; they should not be expected to work after January 15, 2026.
What happened to old conversations?
Microsoft said conversations made through third-party messaging platforms were unauthenticated and could not be transferred into Copilot’s apps or website. Users were advised to export their WhatsApp chat history before the shutdown. Exporting creates a copy for the user; it is not an import into Microsoft Copilot.

Microsoft also stated that third-party Copilot conversations were deleted after approximately 30 days by default under the applicable privacy terms. That statement does not mean every WhatsApp copy, backup, screenshot, or exported file was deleted.
Historical account and chat controls
While the integration existed, Microsoft documented these WhatsApp commands:
- Delete chat history: send
/help, choose Support topics → Delete chat history, send the selection, then confirm Yes, delete history. - Delete the Copilot account: send
/help, choose Support topics → Delete Copilot account, send the selection, then confirm Yes, delete account.
Because the service has ended, these controls are no longer expected to respond.

Microsoft says baseline Copilot access on the web and in desktop and mobile apps is available at no cost, while some capabilities and higher usage limits require a subscription. Limits and plan benefits depend on country, account type, and the current Microsoft offering; check the official Copilot page for current details.
Privacy, policy, and image-rights cautions
Using Copilot through WhatsApp involved both Microsoft’s terms and the third-party platform’s terms. Microsoft’s Copilot Terms of Use cover conversations through third-party apps and platforms.
For image work, avoid uploading:
- Private photos of people without appropriate consent
- Copyrighted artwork you do not control
- Confidential business material or identity documents
- Commercial logos or protected characters for unauthorized use
- Images containing unnecessary personal information
Generated images are not automatically safe for commercial publication. Check trademark and publicity rights, possible resemblance to real people, copyright issues, inaccurate text or visual details, and the terms governing your account. Microsoft 365 Copilot is another Microsoft option, but it is a separate work and productivity experience with different licensing, account, data, and administrative controls. It does not bring back the WhatsApp integration. Microsoft documents that product separately in its Copilot FAQ.
