Microsoft Copilot, Cowork and Scout (Now Autopilot): Which AI Tool Fits the Job?

Copilot Chat answers and drafts, Cowork carries out a defined multi-step assignment, and Scout—renamed Autopilot on September 25, 2026—keeps working toward an ongoing goal. They are not three versions of the same assistant. The practical choice depends on how much autonomy you want, which Microsoft 365 data the agent can reach, whether work may continue after you leave, and how your organization handles usage billing and approvals.

For a quick lookup or a first draft, start in Copilot Home. Delegate a finished package such as an RFP response or launch kit to Cowork. Choose Autopilot only when a persistent agent that monitors work and resumes projects is appropriate and available to your tenant.

The short comparison

Tool Best for How it acts Typical outputs Availability status (October 2026)
Copilot Home and Chat Questions, lookups, drafting and staying informed Responds when you ask; can help create or update editable Office files Answers, summaries, drafts, Word, Excel and PowerPoint edits Core Copilot experience; entitlement depends on the Microsoft account or Microsoft 365 plan
Copilot Cowork A defined project you want delegated from start to finish Plans and executes multiple steps, uses connected sources and can perform approved actions RFP responses, launch kits, customer briefings, financial-close packages, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs, email and calendar changes Generally available worldwide for Microsoft 365 Copilot work tenants since June 2026; personal-account version is Preview
Scout, now Autopilot Standing goals and work that must continue between sessions Persistent and proactive; watches relevant activity, follows up and resumes work later Meeting coordination, reminders, briefing preparation, blocked calendar time and stalled-decision follow-up Scout began in Frontier and private previews; Microsoft announced the Autopilot name on September 25, 2026

Microsoft Chief Marketing Officer Jared Spataro summarized Cowork’s role on September 25, 2026: “Cowork is for work you delegate.” The same announcement describes Autopilot, previously called Scout, as “your digital teammate.” Those descriptions capture the boundary: Chat is interactive assistance, Cowork is delegated execution, and Autopilot is an ongoing agent.

What Copilot Home and Chat actually do

Chat is the request-and-response layer

Chat is the right starting point when you have a question, need a lookup, want a summary or need a draft you will inspect yourself. You provide the instruction, Copilot generates an answer, and the interaction normally ends when the answer is delivered. This model is fast and easy to supervise because there is no expectation that it will keep monitoring a project after the conversation.

Use Chat for tasks such as turning notes into an email, explaining a spreadsheet formula, outlining a presentation or finding information in the context available to your account. Treat generated text as a draft rather than an authoritative record; Microsoft Support warns that Copilot can make mistakes, misinterpret instructions or be deceived by malicious hidden instructions.

Home brings Chat and Cowork together

In Microsoft’s September 25, 2026 announcement, Copilot Home became the entry point that combines Chat and Cowork. Home also connects to Office experiences, so you can create or update editable Word, Excel and PowerPoint files instead of receiving only plain text. The presence of Cowork in Home does not make every request an autonomous job: you still choose whether to ask a quick question or delegate a larger assignment.

What Cowork adds

Delegated, multi-step execution

Cowork is designed for an outcome that requires several coordinated actions. You describe the deliverable and relevant constraints; Cowork can research across connected sources, create working files, revise them and assemble a finished package. Microsoft examples include an RFP response, a product-launch kit, a customer briefing and a financial-close package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its file capabilities cover Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations and PDFs. Cowork can also draft, reply to and send email, manage calendars and OneDrive files, and prepare briefings. With a work or school account, it can post in Teams, search organizational files and people, and work with SharePoint content.

Connected services and browser use

The Cowork integration catalog includes Microsoft plugins and partner connectors for systems such as Jira, Salesforce, ServiceNow, SAP ERP, Workday HCM and Zendesk. A connector expands the sources Cowork can consult; it does not remove your organization’s permissions or make every record visible. Administrators decide which connectors, browser-use features and models are enabled.

The June 2026 general-availability release documented browser use, image generation, customization, new models, consumption visibility and Microsoft Purview integration. Those controls matter when a task crosses Office files, websites and regulated information: the administrator can limit capabilities instead of treating every Cowork run as unrestricted automation.

Where Cowork stops being a simple chat response

A Cowork run may create several artifacts, update a file in OneDrive, prepare an email and organize a calendar entry. That productivity comes with a larger review obligation. Before allowing a run to send messages, alter a shared file or use sensitive customer information, define who may approve the action and which sources are in scope. Cowork’s ability to complete a workflow should not be interpreted as proof that every factual statement or calculation is correct.

What happened to Microsoft Scout?

Scout was the experimental name

Microsoft introduced Scout on June 2, 2026, as an always-on agent working across cloud, desktop and web. The preview connected to Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, chats, email, calendars and contacts. Microsoft described scenarios such as coordinating meetings across time zones, flagging important meetings, preparing meeting materials, blocking calendar time for deliverables and identifying decisions that had stalled.

Scout became Autopilot

On September 25, 2026, Microsoft said Scout was now called Autopilot. The renamed experience is described as a persistent, proactive, personal agent that can watch channels, follow up on threads, run recurring work and resume a project days later. Autopilot has its own identity, memory, computer and workspace inside the tenant, together with permissions, auditing and governance controls.

This is more than a cosmetic label for a chat window. A persistent agent may act when you are not looking at it, so the tenant identity and audit trail are important. Autopilot should be assigned a narrowly defined purpose, limited access and clear escalation rules rather than being given blanket access to every conversation and file.

Availability and account requirements

Scenario Requirement or status What that means in practice
Work or school Cowork Microsoft 365 Copilot license, Cowork enabled, and usage-based plus Cowork billing enabled An administrator must turn on the feature and its consumption model before users can run delegated work
Personal-account Cowork Preview; eligible Microsoft 365 subscription required Feature behavior and eligibility can change while it remains in Preview
Scout/Autopilot preview path Scout was offered through Frontier and selected private previews Access was not a normal, universal Microsoft 365 entitlement
Scout desktop experience Frontier enrollment, Intune policy configuration, opt-in attestation and a GitHub Copilot license were required for the announced desktop path Organizations had to complete policy and enrollment steps before testing the desktop agent
Autopilot after the rename Microsoft announced the new name on September 25, 2026; the earlier preview conditions remain the relevant published access context Do not assume that seeing the Autopilot name means your tenant has automatic access

Cowork’s June 2026 release was recorded by Microsoft Learn as generally available worldwide for Microsoft 365 Copilot tenants. “Generally available” applies to the work-tenant offering; it does not turn the personal Preview into a finished consumer product, and it does not guarantee that an administrator has enabled the feature.

How billing differs

Subscription access versus consumption

Everyday Copilot access is organized around the applicable Microsoft account or Microsoft 365 subscription. Cowork and other agentic capabilities add usage-based billing. The published material does not state a universal per-run or per-token price, so a precise dollar estimate cannot be given from the product status alone.

For a work tenant, administrators can view consumption in the Microsoft 365 admin center and set limits per user or group. Before rollout, decide which teams may run large jobs, whether a monthly ceiling is needed and who receives alerts when usage approaches that ceiling. A user who can open Copilot is not necessarily authorized to incur unlimited Cowork consumption.

What to ask your administrator

  • Is the Microsoft 365 Copilot license assigned to my account?
  • Is Cowork enabled for my user or group?
  • Are usage-based and Cowork billing enabled, and where can I see my consumption?
  • Which models, browser actions, connectors and file locations are allowed?
  • What approval or review is required before Cowork sends mail or changes shared data?

Context, reach and autonomy compared

Decision axis Chat Cowork Autopilot
Autonomy Answers after a prompt Executes a defined sequence to a requested deliverable Continues monitoring and acting toward a standing goal
Primary context Conversation plus the Office context you invoke Microsoft 365 files, connected sources, browser and enabled plugins Tenant data and ongoing activity across Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, email, calendars and contacts
Time horizon One interaction One project or run Recurring work and projects that resume later
Human checkpoint Review the answer before using it Review outputs and sensitive actions before release Set permissions, audit and escalation rules before allowing background work
Billing detail stated publicly in the supplied product documentation Subscription-oriented access Usage-based consumption with administrative limits Preview and tenant-dependent; a universal price is not stated

The key distinction is not whether a tool can generate text. All three can contribute to written work. The distinction is who supplies the next instruction: you supply it every time in Chat, Cowork advances through a bounded assignment, and Autopilot can continue from events, schedules or unfinished threads.

Which tool should you choose?

Choose Chat when the answer is the product

Use Chat for a quick explanation, a first draft, a summary or a decision aid that you will personally verify. It is the least disruptive option when the source material is limited or the consequences of an incorrect action are high, because the tool is not expected to change systems on its own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Cowork when you can define a finished package

Cowork fits a request with a clear beginning and end: gather information, produce specified files, format them for a meeting and prepare associated communication. State the audience, source boundaries, required file types, deadlines and approval points. If the assignment cannot be expressed as a bounded deliverable, it may be a poor Cowork candidate and a better fit for ordinary Chat or a future persistent agent.

Choose Autopilot when the goal survives the session

Autopilot is intended for work that benefits from watching for changes: recurring follow-ups, meeting coordination across time zones, tracking unresolved decisions or preparing material whenever a project moves. Its value comes from persistence, so the governance cost is also higher. Use it only where a tenant identity, memory, workspace and audit trail are acceptable.

Use more than one, in sequence

A practical workflow can begin with Chat to clarify requirements, use Cowork to assemble the approved deliverables, and reserve Autopilot for recurring follow-up after the project is handed off. Keeping these roles separate makes it easier to audit which step generated a draft, which step changed a file and which step continued without a new prompt.

Getting started safely

For a Chat request

  1. Open Copilot Home and choose the Chat experience.
  2. State the task, audience, source material and desired format in one prompt.
  3. Check names, numbers, quotations, links and any claim that could affect a person or organization.
  4. Copy the verified result into the target document or message rather than treating the first response as final.

For a Cowork assignment

  1. Confirm that your work account has a Microsoft 365 Copilot license and that an administrator has enabled Cowork and its usage-based billing.
  2. Describe the end product, deadline, permitted sources, file locations, collaborators and actions that require approval.
  3. Specify whether Cowork may use browser research, image generation, connectors or organizational people and files.
  4. Let Cowork produce the documents or spreadsheets, then inspect calculations, citations, permissions and formatting.
  5. Approve or revise any outgoing email, calendar change, Teams post or shared-file edit before it affects other people.
  6. Check the run’s consumption in the Microsoft 365 admin center if your organization tracks usage by project or group.

For an Autopilot or Scout preview

  1. Verify that your organization is enrolled in the applicable Frontier or private-preview program; the former Scout desktop path required Intune policy configuration and opt-in attestation.
  2. Confirm any required GitHub Copilot license for the desktop experience and assign a dedicated tenant identity with only the permissions needed for the goal.
  3. Define the channels, mailboxes, calendars, files and contacts that may be watched.
  4. Write escalation rules for ambiguous requests, external communication, payments, personal information and account or file changes.
  5. Review audit records and pause or narrow the agent if it follows the wrong thread, repeats work or acts outside its intended scope.

Governance, errors and recovery

Microsoft Support’s warning is explicit: Copilot may make mistakes, misinterpret instructions or be deceived by malicious hidden instructions. Monitor results and review important details, especially when a task involves payments, personal information, communications or changes to accounts or files.

  • Incorrect facts or calculations: compare the output with the source record and have a subject-matter owner sign off before publication or financial use.
  • Prompt injection or hidden instructions: treat instructions embedded in documents, web pages or messages as untrusted content; do not let them override your stated task or approval policy.
  • Wrong recipient or excessive sharing: inspect To, Cc, permissions and sharing links before sending or publishing.
  • Unwanted background activity: pause the Autopilot preview, remove unnecessary permissions and review its identity, workspace and audit events.
  • Unexpected consumption: use the Microsoft 365 admin center’s usage view and apply per-user or per-group limits.

These controls are not optional polish. Cowork can send mail and alter files; Autopilot can continue when no one is watching the screen. Human review remains the final checkpoint for consequential actions even when a run appears complete.

What the Scout-to-Autopilot rename means for teams

Documentation, training and internal policies may still say Scout because the introduction used that name on June 2, 2026. Update search terms and runbooks to “Autopilot (formerly Scout)” so employees can find the current experience without assuming that an old Scout preview is a separate product. Recheck access, Intune policies, attestation records and desktop-license requirements after any tenant update; the rename itself is not evidence that preview access has broadened.

Bottom-line decision rule

Ask one question before opening a tool: Do I need an answer now, a finished package, or a teammate that keeps watch? The first points to Copilot Chat, the second to Cowork, and the third to Autopilot. Start with the least autonomous option that can meet the objective, add connectors and permissions only when necessary, and keep usage limits and human approval in place for every action that can affect money, privacy, communications or shared records.
