If Windows or a build reports that Microsoft.Build.Tasks.CodeAnalysis.dll is missing, the dependable fix is to repair or reinstall the matching Roslyn/MSBuild toolchain—not to download a lone DLL. Confirm which dotnet SDK or MSBuild.exe is being used, repair the Visual Studio or Build Tools Roslyn component when applicable, install the SDK required by the project, restore compatible NuGet packages, and then clear stale build output.
What Microsoft.Build.Tasks.CodeAnalysis.dll is
Microsoft.Build.Tasks.CodeAnalysis.dll belongs to the Roslyn compiler-task tooling used by MSBuild. Roslyn supplies the C# and Visual Basic compiler infrastructure; MSBuild loads compiler and analyzer tasks while it evaluates and builds a project. Microsoft documents the relevant Visual Studio component as Microsoft.VisualStudio.Component.Roslyn.Compiler, described as the C# and Visual Basic Roslyn compilers. The Microsoft.CodeAnalysis.Build.Tasks NuGet package also supplies Roslyn build tasks.

Microsoft does not maintain a standalone reference page for this exact filename, so its identification comes from those documented Roslyn and MSBuild components. In practice, a “file not found” message normally means that the compiler-task installation is incomplete, damaged, selected from the wrong version, or being loaded from an unexpected toolchain location. It is usually not a missing Windows system DLL.

- “The task Microsoft.CodeAnalysis.BuildTasks.Csc could not be loaded.”
- “MSBuild cannot find the CodeAnalysis DLL.”
- A compiler or analyzer task fails to load after a Visual Studio, SDK, package, or CI-agent change.
The same underlying problem can appear in Visual Studio, a Visual Studio Developer Command Prompt, a normal PowerShell or Command Prompt window, a build server, or a continuous-integration agent. The first useful question is therefore not “Where can I download the DLL?” but “Which MSBuild and .NET SDK is this build actually running?”
Why the DLL goes missing
Incomplete or damaged Visual Studio installation
Visual Studio and Build Tools install Roslyn files as part of their workloads and components. An interrupted update, disk cleanup, failed component installation, or damaged files can leave MSBuild present while its compiler tasks are incomplete. If the Roslyn component is selected but files are damaged, the Visual Studio Installer’s Repair operation is the appropriate remedy.
Several SDKs or MSBuild installations are installed
A machine can contain Visual Studio’s MSBuild, Build Tools’ MSBuild, and the MSBuild-based command supplied by the .NET SDK. It can also contain multiple .NET SDK versions. A shell, IDE, or CI job may therefore load a different Roslyn directory than the one you expected. The result can look like a missing file even though a compatible copy exists elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe project requires a different .NET SDK
SDK-style projects can select an SDK through the target framework or a repository-level global.json. If that SDK is absent, an older SDK may be selected, or the installation may be damaged. Microsoft distinguishes .NET installations managed by Visual Studio from standalone .NET Installer installations; use the distribution expected by the project and build environment.
An analyzer or compiler package is incompatible
A failure that begins immediately after adding or updating an analyzer, compiler package, or custom MSBuild target often indicates a version mismatch rather than a missing physical file. Roslyn packages are tied to the Visual Studio version that loads them. Microsoft’s compatibility matrix, for example, lists Roslyn 4.14.0 as requiring Visual Studio 2022 version 17.14, while Roslyn 5.0.0 requires Visual Studio 2026 version 18.0. A package built for a newer host can fail to load on an older one.
Stale generated assets
The obj directory contains generated project assets and resolved package information. After a toolchain or package change, those assets can refer to paths or versions that are no longer installed. Deleting bin and obj and restoring the project regenerates them; this does not repair a missing compiler installation by itself.

Before changing anything: identify the failing toolchain
Open a normal PowerShell or Command Prompt and run these commands:
where dotnet
dotnet --info
dotnet --list-sdks
where msbuild
Record the complete output. It tells you:
- Every
dotnet.exeandMSBuild.exefound onPATH. - The active SDK version, host architecture, base path, and installed runtimes.
- All SDK versions available to an SDK-style project.
Then establish where the error occurs:
- Visual Studio IDE: note the product edition and version shown under Help > About Microsoft Visual Studio.
- Developer Command Prompt: identify which Visual Studio installation supplied the prompt.
- Plain shell: compare
where msbuildandwhere dotnetwith the paths used by the IDE or CI job. - CI agent: capture the same commands in the job log; service accounts often have a different
PATHfrom an interactive user.
Do not proceed by copying a DLL from a different folder. First decide whether the project is using Visual Studio/MSBuild, an SDK-style dotnet build, or a package-provided task.
Fix 1: repair Visual Studio or Build Tools
Use this path when the failure occurs in Visual Studio, classic MSBuild, or a build that depends on Visual Studio-installed compiler tasks.
- Close Visual Studio and any Developer Command Prompt windows.
- Open Visual Studio Installer from the Start menu.
- Find the installed Visual Studio edition or Build Tools for Visual Studio instance and select Modify.
- On the workload and individual-components screens, ensure the workloads required by the project are selected. Verify that
Microsoft.VisualStudio.Component.Roslyn.Compileris installed; Microsoft describes it as the C# and Visual Basic Roslyn compilers component. - If the component is selected but the files are still missing or the installation appears damaged, choose Repair and allow the installer to finish.
- Reopen the correct Developer Command Prompt or Visual Studio instance and repeat the build.
If Visual Studio is not installed and the project uses classic MSBuild, install Build Tools for Visual Studio with the required workloads. Microsoft documents Build Tools as the way to install MSBuild.exe on a Windows system without Visual Studio. For .NET Core and .NET 5 or later SDK-style projects, the .NET SDK supplies the MSBuild-based dotnet build command instead.
Fix 2: install or repair the required .NET SDK
Use this path for SDK-style projects that build with dotnet build. Look in the repository root for global.json. If it exists, its SDK version is the project’s explicit selection; install that version or follow the repository’s documented roll-forward policy. If there is no global.json, check the project target framework and the build instructions for the expected SDK.
- Install the required SDK using the same distribution expected by the environment: a Visual Studio-managed SDK for a Visual Studio-managed workflow, or the standalone .NET Installer for a standalone workflow.
- Close and reopen the terminal, IDE, or CI worker so the new installation and environment variables are visible.
- Confirm selection with:
dotnet --info
dotnet --list-sdks
- Restore and build:
dotnet restore
dotnet build
If dotnet --list-sdks does not show the version required by global.json, restore cannot select it reliably. Installing a random newer SDK may not solve the problem if the repository pins an older one or if an analyzer requires a particular Visual Studio host.

Fix 3: inspect package, analyzer, and MSBuild references
Investigate project-file changes if the error started after adding an analyzer, updating a compiler package, or importing a custom .targets file.
Distinguish the Roslyn packages
Microsoft.CodeAnalysis.Build.Tasksis the NuGet package that provides Roslyn build tasks.Microsoft.CodeAnalysisis the broader Roslyn compiler-platform package and is not interchangeable with the build-task package simply because both contain “CodeAnalysis” in their names.
Check the project and assets files
- Open the project file and any imported
.propsor.targetsfiles. - Search for duplicate or explicitly pinned compiler-task, analyzer, and MSBuild package references.
- Inspect
obj/project.assets.jsonfor the resolved package version and target framework. A stale or unexpected version can reveal why a task is being loaded from the wrong location. - Remove obsolete or duplicate references according to the package’s documentation, then run
dotnet restore. - Choose package versions supported by the installed Visual Studio. Consult Microsoft’s Roslyn package-to-Visual-Studio support matrix before selecting a newer package.
Do not solve a host-version mismatch by forcing a DLL into a package folder. The task, its dependencies, the MSBuild host, and the compiler APIs must agree.
Fix 4: clear stale build output and restore
Once the installation and versions are correct, clear generated output so the project resolves the repaired toolchain from scratch.
Recommended Free Tools
- Close Visual Studio and stop any build process that may have files open.
- Delete the project’s
binandobjdirectories. In a solution with several projects, remove them from each affected project directory. - Open a fresh terminal or the correct Developer Command Prompt.
- Run:
dotnet restore
dotnet build
For a Visual Studio/MSBuild project, rebuild from the repaired Visual Studio instance. Deleting these folders removes generated assets and compiled output; it cannot replace Roslyn files that are absent from Visual Studio, Build Tools, or the SDK.
Fix 5: correct PATH and CI-agent selection
If the build succeeds in one shell but fails in another, the installations may be healthy while the environments differ.
- Compare
where dotnet, dotnet --info, andwhere msbuildin the successful and failing environments. - Use the Visual Studio Developer Command Prompt when the project expects Visual Studio’s MSBuild and compiler components.
- Configure the CI agent with the intended SDK and Visual Studio installation instead of relying on whichever executable appears first on
PATH. - After changing machine-level environment variables or installing an SDK, restart the agent service or open a new session.
Multiple SDKs are supported, but the project’s selection rules still apply. A successful local build does not prove that a CI worker has the same SDK, MSBuild edition, architecture, or package cache.

Windows 10 and Windows 11: what changes?
The documented repair surfaces are the same on Windows 10 and Windows 11: Visual Studio or Build Tools, the .NET SDK, MSBuild, and NuGet restore. The exact installation directories and component versions vary by Windows architecture, Visual Studio release and edition, and whether the project is SDK-style. Use the installer and command output to identify the actual installation rather than assuming a fixed folder.

System File Checker or DISM are not substitutes for repairing a missing Roslyn/MSBuild component. Consider Windows servicing tools only when you have independent evidence of broader operating-system corruption; this particular error points first to the development toolchain.
Why downloading a standalone DLL is unsafe
A DLL copied from an unaffiliated download site can have the wrong assembly version, target framework, dependencies, or processor architecture. It may make one error disappear while causing a different load failure, and it leaves the underlying installer or package state inconsistent. Copying a file from another developer’s computer has the same problem: two machines may use different Visual Studio, MSBuild, SDK, or Roslyn versions.
Use one of the supported repair sources instead:
- Visual Studio Installer’s Modify or Repair actions.
- Build Tools for Visual Studio when classic MSBuild is required without the IDE.
- The .NET SDK installer or the Visual Studio-managed SDK expected by the project.
- NuGet restore for the project’s declared, compatible Roslyn build-task package.
When the error remains after repair
The message names Microsoft.CodeAnalysis.BuildTasks.Csc
Focus on the package or target that defines that task. Verify the resolved Microsoft.CodeAnalysis.Build.Tasks version in obj/project.assets.json, compare it with the installed Visual Studio version, remove duplicate references, restore, and rebuild.
The IDE fails but dotnet build succeeds
The IDE may be using Visual Studio’s MSBuild and Roslyn while the command line uses the .NET SDK. Repair the Visual Studio component and confirm the IDE version; do not assume that a healthy SDK installation repairs Visual Studio’s private toolchain.
dotnet build fails but Visual Studio succeeds
Compare global.json, dotnet --info, and where dotnet in the failing shell. Install the pinned SDK, open a new terminal, clear bin/obj, restore, and build again.
Best Value
The failure occurs only on a build server
Capture tool locations and versions under the service account. Install the required SDK or Build Tools workload on that worker, ensure the job selects the intended installation, and avoid depending on a developer’s local package cache.
Roslyn analyzers and version compatibility
Starting with Visual Studio 2019 version 16.8 and .NET 5.0, Microsoft says the first-party analyzers are included with the .NET SDK; projects targeting .NET 5 or later enable them by default. That does not mean every analyzer package is interchangeable with every host. Third-party or separately pinned analyzers still need a supported compiler and MSBuild environment.
Use the host version as the constraint when upgrading packages. Microsoft’s current compatibility information lists Roslyn package version 4.14.0 with a minimum Visual Studio 2022 version of 17.14 and Roslyn 5.0.0 with a minimum Visual Studio 2026 version of 18.0. Those requirements are tied to the cited package and Visual Studio versions; they are not a promise that any future package will run on an older IDE.

Frequently asked questions
Is Microsoft.Build.Tasks.CodeAnalysis.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with the Roslyn/MSBuild compiler-task toolchain installed through Visual Studio, Build Tools, the .NET SDK, or a compatible NuGet package.
Can I copy the DLL from another PC?
That is not a reliable repair. The copied assembly may not match the receiving machine’s Roslyn, MSBuild, SDK, dependencies, or architecture. Repair the official installation or restore the matching package instead.
Do I need Visual Studio to run dotnet build?
Not for SDK-style .NET Core and .NET 5 or later projects: the .NET SDK supplies the MSBuild-based dotnet build command. Classic MSBuild projects may require Visual Studio or Build Tools.
