1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe right Microsoft 365 security platform depends on the customers you serve and the work your team performs. For an SMB-focused managed service provider (MSP), Microsoft 365 Lighthouse is Microsoft’s purpose-built option: it combines multi-tenant views, recommended security baselines, device and user information, and alert management. A larger organization or managed security service provider (MSSP) running a security operations center (SOC) may need Defender XDR’s multitenant investigation experience instead.
Do not choose on the word “multi-tenant” alone. Check tenant eligibility, licenses, delegated-access controls, baseline automation, incident workflows, integrations, and your own partner-security obligations before committing.

What an MSP security platform must do
Managing Microsoft 365 security across customers is more than opening each tenant’s admin center. A useful platform should let technicians see security posture across tenants, apply repeatable standards, investigate alerts, make narrowly scoped changes, and prove who did what. It also has to respect differences between customers: subscription levels, device enrollment, compliance policies, geography, and exceptions approved through your change-control process.

Microsoft 365 Lighthouse: the SMB MSP option
Microsoft positions Microsoft 365 Lighthouse for partners managing small and midsize business (SMB) customer tenants. It provides multi-tenant views and recommended security configuration baselines, with related views for devices, users, data and alerts. Lighthouse is available to partners enrolled in the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program, including direct-bill partners and indirect resellers.
The broad experience is useful when the same service desk manages identity settings, Microsoft 365 applications, endpoint protection and routine security tasks. It is not a guarantee that every customer or every feature will appear. Eligibility is evaluated at the tenant and feature level.
Lighthouse eligibility checks
Microsoft’s requirements documentation identifies several conditions. Confirm each one during onboarding rather than promising a feature first and checking later.
- Partner status: your organization must be enrolled in CSP.
- Delegated access: the customer tenant needs an approved delegated relationship.
- Supported subscription: the customer must have a Microsoft subscription supported by Lighthouse.
- Tenant size: the cited requirement is no more than 2,500 licensed users in a customer tenant. Microsoft Learn listed this requirement in documentation updated January 19, 2025; verify the current limit before signing a new customer.
- Regional alignment: the partner and customer generally need to be in the same broad geographic region for the full experience.
- Feature prerequisites: device-management views require Intune enrollment and compliance policies. Some user reports require Microsoft Entra ID Premium P1 or later.
These conditions can produce a mixed estate. One customer might qualify for all Lighthouse views, another only for selected security information, and a third might need a subscription or device-policy change before a promised workflow is available. Record the result of each eligibility check in your onboarding documentation.

Where Lighthouse fits operationally
Lighthouse is a strong fit when your technicians perform repeatable administration for many SMB tenants: reviewing posture, applying standard controls, following up on risky users or devices, and escalating incidents to a specialist. Its value is breadth and consistency rather than replacing a mature SOC’s case-management and threat-hunting stack.
Defender XDR multitenant capabilities: the SOC-oriented alternative
Microsoft describes Defender XDR multitenant capabilities as oriented toward larger organizations and MSSPs running SOC investigation workflows. The emphasis is on unified incident views and advanced search across tenants. That is a different center of gravity from Lighthouse’s broader management experience across security, identity and Microsoft 365 applications.

Delegated administration: make GDAP a design decision
Granular delegated admin privileges (GDAP) determine what a technician can see and change in a customer tenant. Treat the relationship as part of your security architecture, not as a one-time connection.
How the GDAP setup works
- Define job functions. Separate service-desk read access, identity administration, endpoint administration and incident response. Assign only the roles each function needs.
- Create the relationship. Lighthouse supports setting up GDAP relationships and reusable templates. Specify duration, roles and the partner security groups that will use them.
- Obtain customer approval. The customer administrator must approve the delegated relationship. Document the approver, scope and expiry.
- Assign technicians through security groups. Put staff into groups that map to their job function; avoid granting broad standing access to every technician.
- Test with a low-risk tenant. Verify that a technician can perform required tasks and cannot perform actions outside the approved role set.
- Review and renew. Remove leavers promptly, review group membership, and renew or reduce relationships according to the customer’s policy.
Microsoft’s Partner Center guidance describes least-privileged and just-in-time approaches. If a tenant has both delegated admin privileges (DAP) and GDAP, GDAP permissions take precedence for technicians in GDAP-enabled groups. This makes group assignment especially important: leaving a user in the wrong group can produce a different effective permission set than your older DAP process suggests.
Baselines and deployment plans: standard does not mean automatic
Lighthouse baselines are intended to create repeatable tenant configurations for core security policies and compliance standards. An active tenant receives a default baseline deployment plan. The plan describes a desired state and breaks it into tasks.

- Automated: the platform can apply or configure the setting within the documented scope.
- Manual confirmation: a technician must review context, make a change or attest that the customer has completed it.
- Exception: the customer cannot or should not adopt the setting because of an application, regulatory or operational dependency.
- Not eligible: a missing subscription, Intune enrollment or other prerequisite blocks the task.
Map these categories to your change-control process. Require customer approval for disruptive changes, record the reason for every exception, and give the service desk a visible queue for tasks awaiting manual review. A baseline that looks complete while manual items remain unattended creates false assurance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Alerts, incidents and remediation workflows
Ask how a platform moves from detection to an owned action. A dashboard that aggregates alerts but cannot assign, enrich or close them may simply add another queue.
Questions for an MSP service desk
- Can alerts be filtered by customer, severity, device, user and status?
- Can a technician link an alert to a ticket and record customer communication?
- Which actions are safe to automate, and which require approval?
- Can the platform show whether a baseline task or incident action succeeded?
- Are audit records retained with the identity of the technician and the delegated role used?
Questions for an MSSP SOC
- Can analysts search and correlate events across tenants without switching contexts?
- Are incidents normalized, deduplicated and assigned to an analyst or queue?
- Can response actions be restricted by tenant, customer contract and analyst role?
- Does the system preserve evidence and a timeline suitable for post-incident review?
Microsoft’s partner material for Defender for Business identifies integrations for alert and vulnerability notifications, fetching incidents and alerts into SIEM tools, and orchestrating remediation. Examples include approving automated investigation actions or taking manual response actions on devices. When comparing platforms, ask for the exact API scope, rate limits, supported response actions, ownership of credentials and audit behavior; “has an API” is not enough.
Partner-side security obligations
Your platform choice does not remove the responsibility to secure the partner tenant. Microsoft’s updated CSP authorization eligibility requirements took effect October 1, 2025. For applicable partner types, Microsoft lists enabling multifactor authentication (MFA) for all administrative users in the CSP tenant, designating a security contact and responding to security alerts within 24 hours or less. Microsoft states that the response-time requirement does not apply to indirect reseller partners; confirm your partner type and the current policy wording.
Best Value
Microsoft’s portal-security guidance reproduces this statement from its published password guidance: “Your password doesn’t matter, but MFA does. Based on our studies, your account is more than 99.9% less likely to be compromised if you use MFA.” The wording is Microsoft’s, and the documentation does not provide the study methodology on that page. Treat it as Microsoft guidance, not as an independently verified benchmark.
A practical platform-selection process
- Segment your customers. Group tenants by user count, subscription, geography, Intune status, compliance requirements and service tier.
- Define the operating model. Decide whether the primary users are service-desk technicians, cloud administrators, SOC analysts or all three.
- Build an eligibility matrix. For every tenant, record CSP relationship, supported subscriptions, licensed-user count, regional alignment, GDAP status and feature prerequisites.
- Map controls to workflows. For each baseline task, specify automation, approval, evidence, exception owner and target completion time.
- Design access groups. Use GDAP templates and security groups aligned to job functions. Test effective permissions where legacy DAP still exists.
- Test integrations. Send representative alerts to your SIEM or ticketing system, execute a permitted remediation action, and verify the audit trail.
- Run a pilot. Select a low-risk customer and one complex customer. Measure alert-to-assignment time, manual-task backlog, failed deployments and technician context switching.
- Set operating commitments. Define response windows, customer notification rules, escalation paths and evidence retention before onboarding the wider estate.
Common failure modes and fixes
Assuming every tenant is eligible
Symptom: a customer is missing from a view or a promised report is blank. Fix: recheck subscription, delegated access, licensed-user count, geography and feature-specific requirements such as Intune compliance policies or Entra ID Premium P1.
Treating a baseline as proof of deployment
Symptom: a dashboard shows a plan, but settings remain unchanged. Fix: inspect task-level status, complete manual-confirmation items, and retain evidence for exceptions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Leaving broad DAP in place
Symptom: technicians have more access than their role requires. Fix: move to scoped GDAP groups, verify customer approval and remove obsolete assignments after testing.
Choosing an investigation tool for an administration problem
Symptom: analysts can search incidents, but the service desk still lacks a practical view of identity, devices and application-management tasks. Fix: compare the daily workflow and consider Lighthouse for SMB operational management, with SOC tooling where deeper investigation is required.
Ignoring partner alerts
Symptom: customer controls are strong but the CSP partner account misses a security notification or response deadline. Fix: assign a security contact, monitor the partner tenant and test the escalation path against the applicable CSP requirements.
What a good decision looks like
Choose Lighthouse when your main challenge is consistent, least-privilege administration across eligible SMB tenants and you need one Microsoft experience spanning security, identity and Microsoft 365 management. Choose Defender XDR multitenant capabilities when your primary work is cross-tenant SOC investigation and advanced incident search at larger scale. In either case, validate eligibility tenant by tenant, design GDAP deliberately, separate automated from manual baseline work, and prove that alerts can become owned, auditable remediation.
