Microsoft 365 Family Cancellation: Billing, Renewal, Refunds and Shared Access (2026 FAQ)

To stop a future Microsoft 365 Family charge, use the account and company that billed you. For a subscription bought directly from Microsoft, sign in to the purchasing Microsoft account, open Services & subscriptions, choose Manage, and complete the cancellation or recurring-billing flow. If you paid through Apple, Google Play, or a retailer, cancellation and billing changes must be handled by that seller.

Turning off recurring billing normally does not end Microsoft 365 Family immediately. The owner and people sharing the plan can use its benefits until the expiry date shown in the account. Refunds are conditional, so check the offer displayed during cancellation rather than assuming one.

First identify who bills you

The purchase channel determines which account can cancel the plan, where a refund request goes, and which company controls the renewal. Signing in to a different Microsoft account can make a valid subscription appear to be missing.

How you paid Where to cancel or stop renewal Who controls refund handling
Direct Microsoft purchase The Microsoft account that purchased the plan, under Services & subscriptions Microsoft’s cancellation flow and applicable regional terms
Apple App Store or Google Play The relevant app-store subscription settings The app store, not Microsoft
Retailer purchase, including a retailer that sells a digital subscription code or subscription The retailer’s account, order, or subscription-support process The retailer’s terms and support process

Microsoft explains the distinction in Where can I manage my Microsoft 365 subscription?. Microsoft cannot cancel or alter billing that a third-party retailer handles.

How to cancel a Microsoft-billed Family subscription

Use these steps for a subscription charged by Microsoft. The labels can vary slightly by account or region, so rely on the options displayed in your account.

  1. Sign in with the Microsoft account that made the purchase.
  2. Open Microsoft Services & subscriptions, or follow the Services & subscriptions link from your Microsoft account dashboard.
  3. Find Microsoft 365 Family and select Manage.
  4. Choose the cancellation or recurring-billing option shown. Microsoft may present a choice to cancel immediately, cancel at the end of the term, or turn off recurring billing, depending on the subscription and region.
  5. Review the displayed end date, refund information, and any effect on benefits. Continue through the confirmation screens.
  6. Save the confirmation email or take a screenshot of the status and expiry date for your records.

What “Turn on recurring billing” means

If the page shows Turn on recurring billing instead of Cancel, Microsoft says recurring billing is already off. The subscription is scheduled to expire on the date displayed, and you do not need to cancel it again. Microsoft documents this status in Turn recurring billing on or off for a Microsoft subscription.

How to cancel a subscription bought through an app store or retailer

Apple or Google Play

Open the account’s subscription-management area in the app store used for payment, select Microsoft 365, and follow that provider’s cancellation instructions. The Microsoft account may still be used for sign-in, but Microsoft does not control the store’s billing record or refund decision. If the subscription is not listed, check the store account that originally paid and search the purchase receipt for the billing identity.

Retailer purchase

Use the retailer’s order history, digital-subscription page, or customer support. Have the order number and the email address used at purchase available. A Microsoft account can show product access without giving Microsoft authority to change a retailer-managed renewal.

Does access stop when recurring billing is turned off?

No. Turning off renewal stops the next automatic charge; it is not usually an immediate termination. Microsoft states that “You (and anyone you have shared your Microsoft 365 Family subscription with) can continue to use your subscription as normal until the expiry date.” The owner and shared users therefore retain Family benefits through the date shown in the account, even though the plan will not renew.

After the expiry date, the subscription benefits end for the owner and shared users. The timing shown in your account is more useful than the date you clicked the cancellation button, particularly if you canceled well before the next billing event.

Refunds: what Microsoft’s rules do and do not promise

A cancellation does not automatically mean a refund. Microsoft says eligibility is determined automatically during the cancellation process. The result depends on the country or region, purchase channel, product terms, whether the payment was an initial purchase or a renewal, and how much time has passed.

Payment situation General Microsoft guidance for direct purchases Important qualification
Initial purchase A general window of 30 days from purchase or before the first recurring-billing date, whichever comes first This is a policy framework, not a guarantee for every account or region
Most recent recurring charge Microsoft describes a one-time refund possibility when cancellation occurs within 30 days after that payment Eligibility is assessed in the cancellation flow and may vary by region and terms
Regional prorated refund Prorated refunds may apply in certain listed markets Availability depends on the market and the transaction
App-store or retailer payment Request the refund from the provider that charged you Microsoft cannot decide or issue a refund for a third-party transaction

Read the amount and method offered before confirming. Microsoft’s current policy is at Microsoft subscription refund policy, and its cancellation guidance is at How to get a refund on a Microsoft subscription.

What happens to people sharing your Family plan?

When you only turn off renewal

People with whom the owner has shared Microsoft 365 Family continue receiving subscription benefits until the plan’s expiry date. No one needs to accept a new invitation merely because recurring billing was disabled.

When the subscription expires

At expiry, shared users lose Family benefits, including the subscription-provided storage. Their Microsoft accounts and personal files are not automatically deleted at that moment, but they must stay within the free storage limits or arrange another storage solution.

When you stop sharing with one person

Stopping sharing is separate from canceling the subscription. In Microsoft’s sharing controls, the owner can remove an individual from the people receiving Family benefits. That person loses the subscription benefits and extra OneDrive storage, but Microsoft says the person is not automatically removed from the wider Microsoft family group. Removing someone from the family group is a separate action. See Manage Microsoft 365 subscription sharing.

Storage and Outlook changes after Family ends

Check actual storage use for every account that depends on the plan before the expiry date. Microsoft’s cancellation guidance says the post-subscription cloud allowance returns to 5 GB, including OneDrive and Outlook.com attachments. Outlook.com has a separate 15 GB mailbox storage allowance described in the same guidance.

Service or allowance After Microsoft 365 Family benefits end If usage remains above the allowance
OneDrive and other cloud storage counted in the Microsoft allowance 5 GB free cloud allowance, including Outlook.com attachments New uploads, file edits, and syncing can be blocked
Outlook.com mailbox storage 15 GB allowance Sending or receiving email may stop when the account is over quota

Being over quota does not erase files immediately. Microsoft’s current Microsoft storage quotas guidance says an over-quota OneDrive can be frozen after three months and might be deleted, including its files, after six months if it remains over the limit. Those are conditional timelines, not an automatic deletion date for every canceled account.

Prepare before the expiry date

  • Open OneDrive storage details for the owner and each shared account, and record actual usage rather than relying on the Family plan’s former capacity.
  • Download or move files that are not needed in OneDrive, then empty recycle bins where appropriate.
  • Review Outlook.com attachments and mailbox size; large attachments count toward the cloud allowance described by Microsoft.
  • Make sure every person who used Family knows the expiry date and checks their own account.
  • Confirm that important files are available offline or backed up in a way you control before reducing cloud data.
  • After cleanup, allow time for usage totals to update and verify that each account is below its allowance.

Troubleshooting common cancellation problems

The subscription is not listed

Sign out and back in with the purchasing Microsoft account. Search payment receipts for another Microsoft account, and check whether the charge came from an app store or retailer. A person who was invited to use Family benefits cannot cancel the owner’s subscription from their own account.

The page offers only “Turn on recurring billing”

That wording indicates recurring billing is already disabled. Confirm the displayed expiry date and keep the confirmation for your records; no additional cancellation is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You canceled but were charged anyway

Check whether the charge was made before the cancellation took effect, whether another account or seller billed you, and whether a separate Microsoft subscription renewed. Compare the charge descriptor with your receipts. For a Microsoft-billed transaction, reopen the cancellation flow to see the recorded status and refund eligibility. For an app-store or retailer transaction, contact that provider.

You need access immediately removed

Turning off recurring billing normally preserves access through expiry. To stop one person’s access sooner, use the separate sharing controls to stop sharing with that person. This removes benefits and extra storage for that individual but does not itself cancel the owner’s subscription.

Which Microsoft guidance should you check?

Cancellation screens and regional terms can change. For the current account instructions, consult Cancel a Microsoft 365 subscription. For recurring-billing status, use Turn recurring billing on or off for a Microsoft subscription. Check the account’s own expiry date and refund offer, because general policy pages cannot predict the result for an individual transaction.
