Microrobots and nanobots are overlapping names for very small machines or active devices. The most common working convention puts microrobots at about 1 micrometer (μm) to 1 millimeter (mm) and nanorobots below 1 μm. The boundary is not universal, and neither term implies a tiny, self-aware humanoid robot. At these scales, devices usually obtain energy from chemistry or an external magnetic, electric, optical, or acoustic field, then move or perform a specific task under controlled conditions.
The short answer: scale is the main difference, but the vocabulary is not standardized
In ordinary usage, microrobot describes an active device whose body is measured in micrometers to millimeters, while nanobot or nanorobot describes one below a micrometer. A 2024 biomedical review uses 1 μm to 1 mm for a microrobot and less than 1 μm for a nanorobot. That is an operational convention, not an internationally fixed standard.

Different fields use the words differently. A 2025 roadmap review groups terms such as microbot, nanobot, micromotor, nanomotor, active colloid and artificial microswimmer under a broader family of small devices that convert energy into controlled motion or task execution. Two papers may therefore describe similar hardware with different labels.

| Term | Common working size | What the label usually emphasizes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microrobot | About 1 μm to 1 mm body length | Motion or task execution at the microscale | The range comes from a 2024 biomedical review; other authors may use a broader range. |
| Nanorobot or nanobot | Below 1 μm body length | Motion or manipulation at the nanoscale | Some authors use “nanobot” loosely for any nanoscale robotic function. |
| Nanorobotics | Not a single device size | Design, fabrication and control of robotic mechanisms at nanometer dimensions | IEEE also includes systems that manipulate nanoscale objects, even when the controlling mechanism itself is larger. |
The practical distinction is therefore not just a name. Reducing a device from micrometers to hundreds of nanometers changes how fluid drag, random thermal motion, surface forces, power delivery, sensing, imaging and manufacturing must be handled.

What “nanobot” means in technical writing
The word nanobot often evokes a free-roaming, intelligent machine that can diagnose and repair a person from inside the bloodstream. That image is fictional shorthand, not a description of the typical laboratory device. Most experimental systems are purpose-built structures with a limited job, an external controller or a chemical fuel, and little or no onboard computation.
IEEE Technology Navigator describes the field this way: “Nanorobotics is the field concerned with the design, fabrication, and control of robots and robotic mechanisms at the nanometer scale, where structural dimensions range from a few to hundreds of nanometers.” In that usage, nanorobotics can mean a nanoscale machine, a system that positions nanoscale parts, or a larger instrument that manipulates objects at nanometer resolution.
When reading a paper or product claim, check whether “nano” refers to:
- the complete moving body;
- a coating, particle or payload attached to a larger microrobot;
- the object being manipulated; or
- the precision of the control or imaging system.
Those are materially different situations. A microrobot carrying nanoparticles is not automatically a nanorobot, and a microscope-controlled probe that assembles nanoscale structures is a nanorobotic system even if the probe is too large to travel through a capillary.
How these devices get energy and move
A robot at this scale still needs an energy source, a way to turn that energy into motion, and a control method. Batteries, motors, processors and radio systems are difficult to shrink together, so many devices receive energy from their surroundings or from equipment outside the operating area.
Chemical propulsion
Chemically powered micromotors use reactions with a fuel in the surrounding liquid to create thrust, bubbles, concentration gradients or surface-tension differences. The fuel may be built into the device or supplied in the environment. This approach can produce autonomous motion in a dish, but the chemistry may be unsuitable for living tissue, difficult to stop precisely, or dependent on a narrow laboratory formulation.
Magnetic actuation
Magnetic fields generated outside the sample can pull, rotate or steer a magnetic bead, helical swimmer, flexible filament or assembled structure. Because the field source remains outside the device, magnetic systems avoid putting a battery and conventional motor onboard. Researchers can change direction or speed by changing field strength, gradient or orientation. The trade-off is the need for specialized coils or magnets, calibration and a clear path for imaging and control.

Light and optical forces
Focused light can trap, push or rotate small structures, while light-responsive materials can bend or change shape. Optical systems offer precise control in a microscope field of view. They generally require a line of sight and can be limited by scattering, heating, penetration depth and the size of the illuminated region.
Acoustic fields
Ultrasound and other acoustic fields can move, assemble or deform small objects without a physical tether. Acoustic control can reach through opaque fluids more easily than visible light, but it requires transducers, careful tuning and attention to pressure, heating and interactions with tissue or bubbles.
Biological motors and hybrid systems
Some designs use biological components, such as molecular motors or living microorganisms, as the propulsion element or combine living material with an artificial carrier. These hybrids may exploit efficient biological motion, but they introduce questions about stability, containment, immune response, reproducibility and eventual disposal.

Soft and flexible architectures
Not every microrobot is a rigid machine. Soft polymers, magnetic elastomers and flexible filaments can bend through confined spaces and reduce the risk of sharp contact. Their deformation is also harder to model and control, and a soft body may be more difficult to manufacture consistently.
Why shrinking from micro to nano changes the engineering problem
Viscous forces dominate motion
At everyday size, a vehicle can coast after its engine stops. In a microscopic liquid environment, viscosity rapidly dissipates motion. A small swimmer must keep generating thrust or exploit a field, gradient or moving fluid. Body shape, surface texture and the surrounding liquid can matter as much as the nominal motor.
Brownian motion becomes important
Thermal collisions with surrounding molecules cause random movement. The smaller the device, the more its intended trajectory is disturbed by this Brownian motion. A nanometer-scale object may need repeated corrections rather than a single precise command, and a path that looks straight in a diagram may wander in practice.
Surface forces can outweigh body weight
Adhesion, electrostatic attraction, capillary effects and other surface interactions become disproportionately strong as dimensions shrink. A particle can stick to a vessel wall, aggregate with other particles or behave differently when the liquid composition changes. Designing a surface that moves reliably without unwanted attachment is a central materials problem.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPower and heat are hard to manage
There is little room for a conventional battery, motor and electronics package. External fields and chemical fuels solve part of the power problem but create new constraints: field generators occupy laboratory space, chemical products may be toxic, and absorbed energy can heat the surrounding fluid or tissue.

Sensing and navigation are indirect
A microrobot may carry a simple sensor, but a nanorobot usually cannot carry a camera, processor and radio in the way a larger robot can. Researchers often infer position from microscopy, magnetic signatures, ultrasound, fluorescence or the response of the surrounding fluid. Navigation can therefore be a closed loop between the device and external imaging equipment rather than an onboard autonomous process.
Fabrication and scale-up are difficult
Making one intricate structure in a cleanroom or under a microscope does not prove that millions can be produced with identical dimensions, coatings and propulsion. Alignment, defects, contamination, sterilization, packaging and recovery all become part of the manufacturing challenge. A design that works in a small laboratory chamber may not be economical or reliable in a larger system.

What microrobots and nanorobots are being developed to do
These are research directions, not a single approved class of medical or industrial products. The evidence level belongs to each design and experiment.
Targeted cargo delivery
A moving structure can be designed to transport a drug, contrast agent, gene-delivery material or other cargo toward a selected region in a fluid model. Researchers study how to load the cargo, keep it attached during transit, release it at the intended location and remove or safely degrade the carrier afterward. A result in a channel or animal model does not establish a treatment for people.
Cell manipulation
Magnetic, optical or acoustic systems can position, rotate or sort cells and other biological objects. Such work may support laboratory preparation, fertilization studies, single-cell analysis or tissue assembly. The key questions are whether the applied force damages the cell, whether the process is repeatable and whether the system can work amid real biological variability.
Diagnostic sensing
Active particles can concentrate near a chemical target, change a measurable signal or carry a sensor through a sample. The advantage is access to small volumes or hard-to-reach interfaces. A useful diagnostic still needs calibration, a low false-positive rate, a clear readout and a validated sample-handling procedure.
Minimally invasive procedures
Small steerable structures are investigated for navigating confined spaces, delivering energy or manipulating tissue. In a living body, blood flow, immune clearance, anatomy, imaging limits and safe retrieval are as important as propulsion. A demonstration in a transparent model cannot by itself show that the device can reach the same target safely in a patient.

Tissue engineering
Microscale carriers and actuated scaffolds can help arrange cells, deliver growth factors or build patterned tissue. Researchers must control the mechanical forces and chemical environment so that the moving device does not disrupt the tissue it is meant to create.
Environmental remediation
Self-propelled particles and externally guided devices are studied for pollutant capture, sensing and treatment in water or other environments. Deployment raises additional questions about retrieving the devices, preventing secondary contamination, tracking their lifetime and operating economically outside a small test vessel.
Nanoscale assembly
Nanorobotic instruments can position, cut, join or inspect nanoscale components. Here the “robot” may be a microscope-controlled mechanism rather than a free-swimming object. Precision, vibration control, calibration and tool wear determine whether a laboratory manipulation can become a repeatable manufacturing process.

Are nanobots real?
Yes, in the limited sense that laboratories have built and tested nanoscale motors, active particles, molecular machines and robotic mechanisms. The devices are real physical systems, but their abilities are specialized. They may move only in a particular liquid, require a magnetic coil or light source, operate for a limited time, or remain observable only through a microscope.
No, if “nanobot” means a general-purpose, independently intelligent machine that can freely roam a human body, make its own decisions, repair any disease and reproduce itself. The literature does not establish such a universal commercial or clinical product. Fictional concepts such as self-replicating swarms should not be used to interpret a laboratory micromotor.
Are nanobots small enough to travel through the human body?
Some nanoscale particles and engineered devices are physically small enough to move through bodily fluids. That fact alone does not mean they can travel to any destination, remain intact, avoid immune clearance, cross a tissue barrier, deliver a payload or be removed safely.
A credible claim about use in people must specify:
- the complete device dimensions, not only the active coating or payload;
- the body compartment and fluid in which it was tested;
- the propulsion and energy source;
- how clinicians locate, steer and monitor it;
- how it avoids unwanted accumulation or interaction with tissue;
- how the device, fuel and by-products are cleared; and
- whether evidence comes from a model, isolated tissue, an animal study, a clinical study or an authorized product.
Blood flow, branching vessels, mucus, tissue density and immune cells create different environments. A device that moves through a stationary laboratory liquid may stall in flowing blood or adhere to a biological surface. For any named device, its current clinical evidence and regulatory status must be checked separately; the broad categories “micro” and “nano” do not establish approval.

A 2025 roadmap review describes practical deployment as limited and identifies engineering, manufacturing, regulatory, sustainability and translation barriers. A 2020 risk review also noted that risk and regulatory discussion was limited at the time it was published. Those observations describe field-level challenges; they do not prove that a particular device is unsafe, safe, approved or unapproved.
Safety, regulation and environmental questions
Biocompatibility
Materials, coatings, fuels and degradation products can trigger toxicity, inflammation or immune clearance. Testing must cover the complete system, including residues and manufacturing contaminants, rather than only the nominal robot body.
Control failure and unintended motion
External fields can affect neighboring objects, and chemical propulsion may continue after the intended task. A safety case needs a way to stop, neutralize, retrieve or account for the device when it leaves the target region.
Imaging and accountability
If a device cannot be located reliably, clinicians cannot confirm delivery or investigate a complication. Tracking methods must work through the relevant tissue or fluid and distinguish the device from background signals.
Manufacturing and sterilization
Medical use requires repeatable dimensions, clean materials, packaging and a validated sterilization method that does not destroy propulsion or payload performance. A one-off laboratory fabrication process is not equivalent to a controlled manufacturing line.
Environmental persistence
Devices released outside the body may accumulate, break down into active fragments or move beyond the test area. Remediation proposals therefore need recovery, degradation and life-cycle plans, not only a demonstration of pollutant capture.
A checklist for evaluating a microrobot or nanobot claim
- Define the object. Ask for the measured dimensions of the complete moving body and distinguish it from a nanoscale coating, cargo or manipulated target.
- Identify the energy source. Determine whether motion comes from chemistry, a magnetic, electric, optical or acoustic field, a biological motor, or a combination.
- Check the environment. Note the liquid, temperature, flow, salts, proteins, tissue model or other conditions in which performance was measured.
- Separate propulsion from intelligence. A device can move without sensing its surroundings, making decisions or communicating wirelessly.
- Look for control and observation details. Find out how position is measured, how commands are delivered and what happens when the signal is lost.
- Check the task and payload. A moving particle, a cell-manipulation tool and a drug carrier have different requirements and risks.
- Classify the evidence. Label the result as simulation, laboratory, animal, clinical or commercial, and read the conditions attached to that label.
- Verify regulation separately. A field review or press release cannot substitute for the authorization and labeling of a named medical device.
- Ask how the device ends its mission. Safe degradation, retrieval, neutralization or excretion should be described, especially for in-body or environmental use.
Why the distinction matters
Calling a device a microrobot or nanobot gives a rough clue about scale, but it does not tell you how it is powered, whether it can be steered, what it can carry or how close it is to practical deployment. The same size range can contain a passive particle, a chemically self-propelled motor, a magnetically controlled swimmer and a microscope-mounted manipulator.
The reliable comparison is therefore functional: measured dimensions, operating medium, actuation method, control and imaging, task, payload and evidence level. On that basis, microrobots and nanobots are best understood as a family of engineered systems at different scales—not as a single universal technology or a routine treatment already operating inside people.
