Microplastics Aren’t Alive, but Their Surfaces Are Biologically Active—and Potentially Harmful

Microplastics are not living organisms. Once bacteria, algae and other microbes attach to a particle, however, they can build a living biofilm that changes the particle’s surface chemistry, movement and the substances it carries. Scientists call this community the plastisphere.

That makes “chemically alive” a useful metaphor for a continually changing microbial surface—not for plastic that can grow or reproduce. The warning that these particles are “probably up to no good” is plausible but conditional: effects depend on the polymer, particle size, weathering, environment and exposure time, and current studies do not prove that every microplastic causes human disease.

What “chemically alive” means

A bare plastic fragment is inert in the biological sense. In water or sediment, its surface can quickly acquire a coating of organic molecules and microorganisms. Attached cells secrete extracellular material that binds them together into a biofilm. That coating changes the particle’s hydrophobicity, roughness and available chemical binding sites.

The resulting plastisphere has its own community structure. Different particles select for different microbes, and the community can change as the particle weathers or moves between light, oxygen, temperature and nutrient conditions. The plastic remains nonliving, but its surface becomes a biologically active interface that can behave like a small microbial chemical reactor.

How a plastisphere forms and changes a particle

Attachment creates a habitat

Microbes do not merely passively land on a particle. They attach, produce a sticky extracellular matrix and recruit additional organisms. A mature biofilm can include bacteria and other microorganisms that would not be abundant in the surrounding water. The particle then provides a persistent surface on which those organisms can grow and interact.

The coating changes transport and retention

A biofilm can make a particle more likely to collide with other surfaces or become trapped in biological material. In a 2024 study of Rhine River biofilms published in Environmental Microbiology Reports, biofilms contained up to 10 times more microplastics than the surrounding water. On experimental tiles, biofilm-covered surfaces retained 6–12 times more particles than tiles without biofilm. Those are study-specific measurements, not estimates of how many particles are retained in every river.

The community can alter chemical reactions

Enzymes and metabolic products made by biofilm organisms can transform contaminants attached to the plastic or dissolved nearby. The direction of change is not consistent: one community may break a compound down faster, while another may slow the process.

What the studies have found

Study and year Setting and materials Observed result What it does not establish
Chemical Engineering Journal, 2025 Biofilms associated with PVC, polystyrene (PS), polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) PVC-associated biofilms inhibited dichlorophenyl biodegradation by 50%. PS, PLA and PET-associated biofilms accelerated degradation for 13, 15 and 13 days, respectively. The result does not mean each polymer always inhibits or accelerates degradation; it reflects the tested communities and conditions.
ACS ES&T Water, 2024 Microplastics collected from aquaculture environments Biofilm biomass increased by 173–617% compared with the original samples. Polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) supported rich, mature biofilms, while PET attracted more plastic degraders, including Pseudomonas. The biomass range is not a global average and does not identify a universal “most dangerous” polymer.
Environmental Microbiology Reports, 2024 Rhine River water and biofilm-covered versus uncovered tiles Biofilms held up to 10 times more microplastics than ambient water; covered tiles retained 6–12 times more particles than uncovered tiles. Retention varies with flow, surface type, particle properties and biofilm maturity.
International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology, 2024 Wastewater biofilms observed over several weeks Under the study conditions, formation was highest after three weeks and lowest after five weeks. Biofilm development is not a simple linear increase with time; conditions and community succession matter.
Water Research, 2025 Particles downstream of wastewater discharge Researchers recovered viable Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Citrobacter and Enterococcus associated with particle biofilms. Isolates carried virulence and antimicrobial-resistance genes. Detected organisms and genes do not prove that exposure causes treatment-resistant human infections.

Why the warning is scientifically plausible

Particles can stay in places longer

If a biofilm increases attachment to sediment, plants or infrastructure, it can change a particle’s residence time and exposure route. A particle that would otherwise remain suspended may settle, accumulate in a biological mat or be eaten by an organism that encounters the biofilm.

Biofilms can change contaminant breakdown

The 2025 polymer comparison shows why a single statement about “microplastics” is misleading. PVC-associated biofilms slowed dichlorophenyl biodegradation, while PS-, PLA- and PET-associated biofilms sped it up for measured periods. The polymer and the organisms growing on it jointly determine the chemical outcome.

They can participate in ecosystem chemistry

Metagenomic analyses of plastisphere communities have identified genes associated with nitrification, denitrification and degradation of petroleum-based and biopolymer-based plastics. These findings indicate that particle biofilms can participate in nutrient cycling and carbon chemistry. They do not show that every particle carries those functions or that the functions are beneficial or harmful in every ecosystem.

They can carry wastewater-associated biology

The wastewater findings raise a separate concern from chemical contamination. Viable bacteria were recovered from particle biofilms, and some isolates contained virulence and antimicrobial-resistance genes. The Water Research authors noted that pathogen levels were low but remained highly virulent, and proposed that microplastics could be used as a tool for water-quality surveillance. A resistance gene is evidence of genetic potential, not proof of a resistant infection in a person.

Why microplastics do not all behave the same way

Risk assessment has to specify the particle and its surroundings. Important variables include:

  • Polymer chemistry: PVC, PS, PET, PE, PP and PLA provide different surfaces and additives for colonization.
  • Particle size and shape: These affect surface area, settling, suspension and which organisms can attach.
  • Weathering and age: Sunlight, abrasion and oxidation alter roughness and chemical binding sites.
  • Environment: Freshwater, marine, aquaculture and wastewater systems select different communities.
  • Biofilm maturity: Early colonizers and mature communities can have different genes and chemical activity.
  • Oxygen, light and temperature: These conditions select microbes and control their metabolic rates.
  • Exposure duration: A result measured after days or weeks cannot automatically be extended to years in another ecosystem.

Does this prove microplastics make people sick?

No. The evidence establishes a dynamic microbial surface and several plausible ecological hazards, but it does not establish a universal human-health dose, a specific clinical outcome or that every microplastic is harmful. Laboratory and field observations often measure colonization, gene presence, particle retention or contaminant transformation rather than disease.

The most defensible conclusion is narrower: biofilms can change where microplastics go, what they carry and how associated chemicals behave. Human-health risk remains an open quantitative question that requires linking real-world exposure levels to absorption, persistence and biological effects.

How to interpret future claims

  • Check the polymer, particle size and environment before generalizing a result.
  • Separate a measured gene, organism or chemical transformation from a demonstrated health effect.
  • Treat “up to” figures as the maximum observed under named study conditions, not as typical prevalence.
  • Ask whether the biofilm was newly formed or mature and how long the experiment lasted.
  • Look for the endpoint: retention, biomass, biodegradation, nutrient genes and pathogen recovery answer different questions.
