Micron’s 88% figure is the operating margin for its Mobile and Client business unit in fiscal Q4 2026—not its gross margin. The unit’s gross margin was 90%. Revenue rose to $13.114 billion even though bit shipments fell, as higher prices more than offset the lower shipment volume. “Consumer memory” is shorthand here: Mobile and Client is a broader business unit, not a retail-memory-only segment.
What Micron’s 88% margin actually measures
Micron’s fiscal Q4 2026 ended September 3, 2026; the company released results on September 30. Its Mobile and Client unit recorded an 88% operating margin and a 90% gross margin for the quarter. The measures are related but not interchangeable: gross margin is revenue less cost of goods sold, while operating margin also accounts for operating expenses.

The 88% operating margin was the highest among Micron’s reported business units. Core Data Center, however, matched Mobile and Client’s 90% gross margin. The figures are reported by Micron in its fiscal Q4 and full-year 2026 results.
How Mobile and Client compared with Micron’s other units
All figures below are Micron’s reported fiscal-quarter results. Revenue is in U.S. dollars; margins are percentages. Sequential comparisons use Q3 FY26, while the year-over-year comparison uses Q4 FY25. Source: Micron’s September 30, 2026 earnings release.

Micron’s consolidated revenue was $54.229 billion in Q4 FY26, compared with $41.456 billion in Q3 FY26 and $11.315 billion in Q4 FY25. For full fiscal 2026, revenue totaled $133.188 billion. On a companywide basis, Q4 gross margin was 86.8% under GAAP and 87.0% under non-GAAP accounting; operating margin was 80.7% GAAP and 82.3% non-GAAP. These are consolidated figures, not Mobile and Client’s segment margins.
Why revenue rose while bit shipments fell
Mobile and Client revenue increased from $11.521 billion in Q3 FY26 to $13.114 billion in Q4 FY26. Tom’s Hardware reported Micron attributed the increase to higher pricing, partially offset by lower bit shipments. That is a directional explanation, not a quantified price-versus-volume breakdown; the reporting does not give a percentage contribution for either factor.

“Bits” refers to shipment capacity measured by memory bits, not a count of individual chips or packages. A decline in shipped bits therefore does not establish that fewer separate products or packages were shipped. See Tom’s Hardware’s account of Micron’s shipment direction and price attribution.
Strong results across the business—not just client devices
The margin story was not confined to the consumer-facing shorthand implied by “consumer memory.” Core Data Center reported $18.002 billion in revenue, a 90% gross margin and an 85% operating margin. Cloud Memory reported $16.283 billion in revenue and a 76% operating margin; Automotive and Embedded reported $6.824 billion and a 79% operating margin.

The scale of Micron’s overall results provides additional context: the company reported $54.229 billion in quarterly revenue and $133.188 billion for fiscal 2026. Those results span all four business units rather than representing consumer memory alone.
What Micron forecast for fiscal Q1 2027
Micron’s September 30, 2026 outlook for fiscal Q1 2027 called for revenue of $61.5 billion, plus or minus $1.5 billion. It forecast approximately 85.95% GAAP gross margin and approximately 86.25% non-GAAP gross margin, with non-GAAP diluted earnings per share of $38.15, plus or minus $1.00. These are company guidance figures, not Q1 actual results or a guarantee.
CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said in the earnings release: “Micron delivered record fiscal 2026 results, and we expect an even stronger fiscal 2027.” The forecast expresses management’s expectation; it does not establish what the company ultimately achieved.
