Micron expects memory demand to exceed supply in calendar 2027 and 2028, with tighter industry conditions than in 2026. That is a company forecast reported after its FY2026 Q4 earnings call—not a prediction of a particular retail RAM shortage or price increase.
What Micron forecast for 2027 and 2028
Micron CEO and chair Sanjay Mehrotra was quoted as saying that demand would exceed supply in both calendar years and that industry conditions would be tighter than in 2026. Tom’s Hardware reported the remarks from Micron’s FY2026 Q4 call on October 1, 2026. The available Q4 wording comes from news coverage and a third-party transcript reproduction; an official Q4 transcript or prepared remarks was not available in the sources cited here.

“In calendar 2027 as well as 2028, we see demand exceeding supply. In fact, we see greater tightness in the industry in 2027 and in 2028 versus 2026. Overall, supply-demand environment is only getting tighter.”

How shipments can grow while supply remains constrained
The reported outlook expects industry bit shipments of DRAM and NAND to grow in the low-to-mid 20% range in 2027 and 2028. That is forecast growth in the number of bits shipped, not a claim that manufacturers will produce enough to satisfy all demand. A growing market can receive more memory than before and still face a supply-demand shortfall if demand grows faster.

The figures are company outlook as reported from the Q4 call, not observed shipment results. Earnings Whispers’ transcript reproduction also describes industry bit shipments growing in the low 20% range in both years while the industry remains supply constrained: transcript reproduction.
RAM is only part of the forecast
DRAM is the memory commonly meant by RAM in PCs and many other devices. NAND is non-volatile storage used in products such as SSDs and phones; it is not RAM. The Q4 coverage discusses both DRAM and NAND, so the broader memory-and-storage outlook should not be read as a forecast that every RAM product will be equally scarce.

Why Micron says supply is difficult to expand
Micron’s official FY2026 Q3 prepared remarks provide context, though they are not the exact Q4 forecast. The company said it expected industry supply to improve gradually in 2028, but could not see when memory supply would catch up with increasing demand:
Rank #3
- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
“Even as we expect industry supply to improve gradually in 2028, we currently do not have line of sight as to when memory supply will be able to catch up with increasing demand.”
Micron cited long fab construction lead times, shortages of workers with critical trade skills, permitting and regulatory requirements, and the energy infrastructure needed to support manufacturing. These constraints mean that adding capacity is a slow process rather than an immediate response to stronger demand. See Micron’s investor materials.

What is driving demand—and what is not quantified
In its Q3 remarks, Micron pointed to AI data-center growth and AI features spreading to smartphones, high-end PCs and other devices. It also described rising demand for higher-performance memory and limited cleanroom space. These are the company’s explanations of relevant trends; the available statements do not measure how much each factor contributes to the projected 2027–2028 supply gap.

What the outlook means for PC buyers
Micron’s forecast is not enough to conclude that consumer RAM will be unavailable, that prices will rise by a particular amount, or that everyone should buy memory now. It is an industry-level outlook, not a forecast for a specific retailer, product or local market. If you are planning a PC upgrade, base a purchase on your actual need and check motherboard and CPU support, DDR generation, capacity and kit compatibility. The forecast by itself does not establish that buying early will save money.
