In 2026, the maximum weekly benefit rate is $530, and eligible claims generally cover 14 to 26 weeks—but your wage history and circumstances determine your actual benefit. Apply through MiWAM or by phone to receive a decision on your claim.
This guide reflects Michigan UIA information available on October 4, 2026. Certification is currently biweekly; UIA has announced a planned move to weekly certifications and payments on November 9, 2026.

Who may qualify for Michigan unemployment benefits?
Eligibility is decided on the facts of each claim. Michigan UIA considers your wages during the relevant base period, why your work ended or your hours fell, and whether you meet ongoing requirements. In general, you must be unemployed, able to work, available for suitable full-time work, and actively seeking it. You also need to register for work unless UIA tells you otherwise.

Meeting a wage test alone does not guarantee benefits. UIA may review the circumstances of your separation and other eligibility issues. A person who left work because of domestic violence or to protect the safety of a household member may qualify under a rule that took effect July 17, 2026, if the other requirements are met. The rule does not guarantee an award in an individual case.

Michigan’s wage qualification routes
The 2026 UIA program page and handbook describe a standard wage test and an alternate earnings qualifier. The agency determines which test applies based on the claim; these figures are qualification thresholds, not benefit amounts.
| Route | Wage requirements stated by Michigan UIA |
|---|---|
| Standard wage test | For benefit years starting after February 21, 2026, at least $5,157 in the highest quarter, wages in at least two quarters, and total base-period wages of at least 1.5 times the highest-quarter wages. |
| Alternate earnings qualifier | Wages in at least two calendar quarters and total base-period wages of at least $26,677.60. The 2026 UIA handbook gives this figure as 20 times the 2026 state average weekly wage of $1,333.88. |
These thresholds are from Michigan UIA’s 2026 program information and handbook. Your Monetary Determination shows whether UIA found you monetarily eligible and states your benefit rate and eligible weeks.
How much can you receive, and for how long?
For 2026, Michigan’s maximum weekly benefit rate is $530. UIA calculates the weekly rate using 4.1% of wages in the highest base-period quarter, subject to that maximum. The agency sets the number of payable weeks according to base-period wages and the weekly rate, within a general range of 14 to 26 weeks.

The maximum is not the amount every claimant receives, and the general duration range is not an individual award. Use the rate and weeks shown on your Monetary Determination rather than estimating entitlement from a single pay stub. If you believe the wage information is wrong, follow the instructions on the determination.
UIA has also announced a higher maximum rate of $614 per week, plus $26 per dependent for up to five dependents, effective January 1, 2027. Those are scheduled future figures, not the 2026 maximum; check current UIA information if your benefit year begins on or after the change.
How do you apply?
Michigan UIA’s July 2026 Fact Sheet 160 lists two claim-filing options. You can apply online through Michigan.gov/UIA after signing in to MiLogin and opening MiWAM, or file by phone at 1-866-500-0017, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Have the following information ready:

- Your driver’s license or state ID and Social Security number. If you are not a U.S. citizen, have your USCIS number and work-authorization expiration information.
- For every employer you worked for during the previous 18 months: the employer’s name and address, your first and last work dates, pay rate and pay frequency, and information about why the work ended or changed.
- Your bank account and routing numbers only if you choose direct deposit. UIA also offers payment by debit card.
Enter employer and separation details accurately. Missing or inconsistent information can lead to follow-up questions or a decision that requires review.
Complete work registration before your first certification
After filing, create a job-seeker account at MiTalent.org and complete the Michigan Works! service-center registration process before your first certification, unless UIA instructs you otherwise. Ask your local Michigan Works! office whether it offers a virtual option. Watch MiWAM, your mail, and other contact channels for agency requests, and respond by the deadline stated in each notice.
What must you do to keep receiving benefits?
Certify every two weeks under current instructions
As of October 4, 2026, claimants generally certify every two weeks through MiWAM or by calling MARVIN at 1-866-638-3993 during their assigned call-in time. MiWAM online certification is available throughout the certification week. Do not certify both online and by phone for the same period.
Complete and report work searches
For each week you claim, complete at least three unique work-search activities and report them during certification. This requirement began July 19, 2026. Keep records of your activities; UIA may ask you to document them. Follow the agency’s current list of valid activities because a particular activity may not count if it does not meet UIA’s criteria.
Report earnings for the week you worked
If you work part time, report your gross earnings—before deductions—for the calendar week in which you performed the work. Part-time earnings may reduce a benefit; working part time does not automatically make you ineligible. Report the information during certification even if you have not yet been paid for that work.
Track your payment status
UIA says payment is generally issued within two to three business days after certification, but processing problems or questions can cause delays. The agency also says a first payment commonly arrives about three weeks after filing, depending on the circumstances. These are estimates, not guarantees; check MiWAM for payment status and correspondence.

What is changing with MiUI and weekly certifications?
In an update published September 16, 2026, UIA said benefits functions are scheduled to move from MiWAM to the new MiUI system on November 9, 2026. The agency also announced plans to change claim certifications and payments from biweekly to weekly after launch. Since the launch date is still in the future as of October 4, 2026, continue using the instructions currently shown for your claim and check UIA notices for any revised schedule or transition directions.
What if UIA questions or denies your claim?
UIA issues a monetary determination about wage eligibility and a non-monetary determination after investigating an eligibility issue. Read each notice in full, including the reason for the decision, the evidence it describes, and the instructions for responding. If you disagree, use the form and route specified for that particular determination; UIA cautions that its chatbot cannot file a protest or appeal for you.
Deadlines and appeal routes depend on the decision, so follow the date and instructions on the notice rather than assuming there is one deadline for every case. UIA identifies requests for rehearing or reopening through MOAHR and appeals to the UIAC as possible later steps after an unfavorable decision. Effective July 17, 2026, parties may also ask to consolidate related cases for one hearing before a MOAHR administrative law judge.
Keep copies of the determination, your response, supporting records, and proof of submission. If you are unsure which route applies, use the contact information and instructions in the notice or consult current UIA guidance.
Which filing and payment options should you use?
| Choice | What it is for | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Online filing through MiWAM | Submitting an initial claim through MiLogin and MiWAM. | Use the online account to provide claim information and monitor notices. |
| Phone filing | Submitting an initial claim by calling 1-866-500-0017 during the listed weekday hours. | Have employer, wage, identity, and separation details ready before calling. |
| Online certification through MiWAM | Certifying for benefits during the certification week. | Available throughout that week under current instructions; do not also certify by phone for the same period. |
| MARVIN phone certification | Certifying by phone at 1-866-638-3993. | Call during your assigned time and do not submit a duplicate online certification. |
| Direct deposit | Receiving benefit payments in a bank account. | Provide your account and routing numbers when selecting this option. |
| UIA debit card | Receiving benefit payments through the agency’s debit-card option. | Available for claimants who do not choose direct deposit. |
These options and procedures reflect UIA information available in October 2026. The announced MiUI transition may change the benefits system and certification schedule after its planned launch.
