A federal complaint accuses Chloe Renae Freeman, a registered nurse who worked at Trinity Health Ann Arbor, of helping an immigration detainee leave the hospital before his care was complete. Freeman has pleaded not guilty, according to local reporting; the complaint is an allegation, not a finding of guilt.
What is Freeman accused of?
A criminal complaint filed on August 28, 2026, charges Freeman with instigating or assisting escape under 18 U.S.C. §752(a), a misdemeanor. The account comes from an FBI agent’s sworn affidavit, submitted to establish probable cause. It is not a verdict, and the complaint’s claims have not been adjudicated.
The court filing refers to the patient as “OBP,” an identifier used in the record. His identity and whereabouts after leaving the hospital have not been established in the cited reporting.
What does the complaint say happened at the hospital?
According to the complaint, U.S. Border Patrol agents encountered OBP in Ann Arbor on May 28, 2026, during a targeted immigration enforcement operation. Agents said he ran when approached, fell and struck his face, and was taken into administrative immigration custody. EMS brought him to Trinity Health Ann Arbor for further evaluation.

After a CT scan, a CT operator reportedly recalled Freeman and another nurse asking that OBP be held rather than returned to his room. The complaint says badge records showed Freeman entering the CT room at 11:31:51 p.m.; security video showed OBP leaving through the ambulance bay at 11:32:59.484 p.m. The filing said he had not been located by the time it was submitted.
The complaint further says that, in a June 18 hospital interview, Freeman admitted letting OBP leave, removing his IV and escorting him through the ambulance bay before his care was complete and before he was properly discharged. These are the FBI agent’s account of an interview; the sources cited in coverage do not include a recording or transcript.

What did Freeman reportedly say about ICE and families?
The complaint attributes to Freeman the statement that she disagreed with ICE separating people from their families and knew she “was going to set him free.” It also says she acknowledged that, because of his injuries, OBP could have died. These remarks are reported in the affidavit, rather than independently available interview material, and do not determine whether the charge is proved.
