For Michigan’s November 3, 2026 general election, absentee voting lets you complete a ballot away from an early voting site and return it by the deadline; early in-person voting lets you complete and tabulate a ballot at your assigned site during its local schedule. Most absentee ballots must reach the local clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day. The state’s 2026 toolkit lists at least nine days of early voting through Sunday, November 1, but site assignments and hours vary. Confirm your details at Michigan.gov/Vote.

Which option fits how you want to vote?

Decision factor Absentee voting Early in-person voting
Where you complete the ballot At home or at the local clerk’s office At your assigned early voting site
What to arrange Request a ballot by the application deadline, then allow time to receive and return it Look up your assigned site and its dates and hours
How the vote is cast Return by mail, drop box, or to the clerk; a completed ballot can also be submitted at an early voting site Complete the ballot at the site and insert it into a tabulator
Main deadline concern The clerk generally must receive the ballot by 8 p.m. Election Day Vote while your assigned site is open; the 2026 statewide-election minimum period runs through November 1
Registering within 14 days of the election Register or update your address at the clerk’s office with proof of residency; eligible voters can request, complete, and submit an absentee ballot there Register or update your address at the clerk’s office first; most early sites do not offer registration
Changing plans You can surrender an absentee ballot at an early voting site for a replacement; rules for spoiling or replacing a submitted ballot depend on timing and how it was submitted Once inserted into a tabulator, the ballot cannot be changed

Both options are available to registered Michigan voters. You may request an absentee ballot for any reason. Early in-person voting is available for statewide and federal elections to voters eligible for that election; local early voting is offered at the local clerk’s discretion. Michigan Secretary of State early voting guidance explains the statewide schedule and site rules.

  • Return a standard absentee ballot: The clerk must receive it by 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 3. A ballot placed in a drop box must be deposited by that time.

Some communities may offer voting on the Monday before Election Day, but availability is local rather than guaranteed statewide.

How to vote absentee

  1. Check your registration and address. If you are registered, request an absentee ballot online, by mail, or from your local clerk. You may also choose to join Michigan’s permanent absentee ballot list. Start at Michigan’s absentee voting page.
  2. Request the ballot in time. Online and mailed applications are due by 5 p.m. the Friday before Election Day; voters registered at their current address can apply in person until 4 p.m. the day before. Applying earlier gives you more time to receive and return the ballot.
  3. Complete the ballot and sign the return envelope. Your signature should resemble the one on file with the clerk. The clerk checks it; an invalid signature can result in rejection and notice to you.
  4. Return the ballot using an accepted method. Mail it, place it in a secure drop box, or deliver it to your local clerk. For most voters, the clerk must receive it by 8 p.m. Election Day, so mailing it that day does not meet the general deadline. Military and overseas ballots follow a separate rule: they must be postmarked by Election Day and received within six days after the election.
  5. If you switch to voting in person, take the ballot with you. You may surrender your absentee ballot at an early voting site to receive a replacement. Alternatively, take your completed absentee ballot to the site; election inspectors verify it before it is submitted for tabulation. Do not cast both ballots.

Detroit voters should note a location-specific restriction: absentee ballots cannot be tabulated at Detroit polling places on Election Day. The state’s absentee guidance directs Detroit voters to return those ballots by drop box or to the local clerk.

How to vote early in person

  1. Check your registration and address before going. If you need to register or update your address within 14 days of the election, do it in person at your local clerk’s office and provide proof of residency. Early voting sites generally do not register voters unless the site is also a clerk or satellite office.
  2. Find your assigned site, dates, and hours. Use Michigan.gov/Vote or contact your local clerk. Site assignments may serve multiple precincts, cities, or townships, but you must vote at a site assigned to you; you cannot assume any nearby site will accept your ballot. Hours and any extra days are local and election-specific.
  3. Vote at the site while it is open. Complete your ballot there and insert it into a tabulator. State guidance asks voters to bring acceptable photo ID. If you do not have ID, you can still vote after signing an affidavit.
  4. Handle any absentee ballot correctly. Surrender it at the site to receive a new ballot, or bring the completed absentee ballot for verification and tabulation. Do not vote twice.

Can you register and vote on Election Day in Michigan?

Yes, eligible voters can register or update an address at their local clerk’s office through 8 p.m. on Election Day, provided they are in line by 8 p.m. Bring proof of residency. At the clerk’s office, you can request, complete, and submit an absentee ballot. Do not assume an early voting site can register you: most cannot unless the location is also a clerk or satellite office. See the Secretary of State’s voter registration guidance for the registration process.

Where is your early voting site?

Look up your assigned site and its schedule through Michigan.gov/Vote or ask your local clerk. Michigan requires at least nine consecutive days of early voting for statewide and federal elections, beginning the second Saturday before Election Day and ending the Sunday before it. Local communities may add days, and the schedule and hours are not necessarily the same at every site. For the November 2026 general election, the statewide toolkit lists the period through Sunday, November 1.
