It is the Miami share of a $3 billion gift to Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), which plans a new campus in Wynwood. CMU says it will organize that campus around research and education addressing major societal challenges. The announcement explains what CMU and Griffin say they hope to build; it does not establish that Miami lacks universities or that existing institutions fail to cover those subjects.
What is Griffin’s $2 billion funding?
On September 30, 2026, Carnegie Mellon announced a $3 billion gift from Griffin. CMU designated $2 billion to launch Carnegie Mellon University Miami and $1 billion for its Pittsburgh campus: $500 million for the School of Computer Science, which is to be renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science, and $500 million for broader university priorities. CMU described the overall gift as the largest individual philanthropic investment in higher education; that distinction is the university’s characterization. CMU’s announcement gives the allocation.
The Miami project is an expansion by an established Pittsburgh research university, not an announced stand-alone institution. CMU describes it as a comprehensive campus in Wynwood, built around a different organizing model from one that begins with traditional academic disciplines. CMU’s “Two Cities. One CMU.” overview presents the two campuses as parts of the same university.
Miami already has universities. What does CMU say it will add?
Miami’s higher-education landscape is not empty. The Associated Press reports that the University of Miami, Florida International University and Miami Dade College together enroll around 135,000 students. The CMU announcement is therefore best understood as a claim about the model and focus of a new campus—not evidence that the city has no universities or lacks higher education capacity. The Associated Press report provides that local context.

CMU says Miami students and researchers will work across disciplines on four broad challenges:
- Human health and biological discovery
- National security and strategic capabilities
- Energy and climate resilience
- Advanced manufacturing and industrial transformation
These are announced organizing themes, not a finalized list of degree programs. CMU has not established in the cited announcements that existing Miami institutions do not teach or conduct research in these areas. The distinction the university emphasizes is how it intends to organize education and research at this campus.

Why does CMU say it chose Miami?
CMU’s public case is that it can extend its research and educational model into a major city and bring work from different fields together around societal challenges. President Farnam Jahanian tied that approach to the pace of technological change, particularly artificial intelligence: “Artificial intelligence represents one of the defining intellectual developments of our time, and it demands that we rethink how we educate students, conduct research and partner with others.” Jahanian’s September 30 announcement sets out the university’s rationale.
Griffin also framed the campus as a way to deepen CMU’s presence in Florida. In the same announcement, he said: “The opportunity to bring Carnegie Mellon to Miami places our city at the heart of humanistic and scientific advancement and amplifies the University’s international reach and impact.” These statements explain the donor’s and university’s stated case; they do not independently demonstrate unmet local demand or establish Griffin’s personal reasons for making the gift.

When is the campus expected to open, and how large could it be?
CMU describes the planned site as 35 acres in Wynwood. Construction is slated to begin in 2027. Subject to necessary regulatory approvals, the current plan is to enroll graduate students in 2028 and welcome the first undergraduate cohort in 2032. Those are planned milestones, not guaranteed dates. CMU’s gift announcement sets out the timetable.
The university’s CMU Miami overview projects that the campus could eventually serve more than 3,500 students, with nearly 300 faculty and more than 600 staff. These are future projections, not current enrollment or staffing figures.

What is not yet settled?
The public announcements do not specify final degree offerings, tuition, admissions requirements, regulatory approval status or a line-by-line spending plan for the Miami allocation. The four challenge areas describe the proposed campus’s broad focus; they should not be read as operational programs already available to students.
Griffin has made an earlier education-related gift in Miami: CMU says his $20 million contribution to Miami Dade College established a scholarship fund intended to provide financial assistance to more than 8,000 students from low-income households. That earlier gift offers local philanthropic context, but it does not establish why he made the later commitment to CMU. CMU’s account of Griffin’s giving describes the scholarship fund.
