What authorities reportedly seized
Reuters reported that authorities found 300 GPUs, 80 medium-voltage terminals and eight satellite antennas at the Tlaola site. The Block, citing a September 6 Puebla government statement, also reported that a transformer was seized. It said federal prosecutors, the Mexican navy and state security officers participated in the operation.

These are reported inventory details, not a measurement of the mine’s capacity or output. The reporting reviewed did not provide a site-specific estimate of electricity consumption, cryptocurrency mined or financial proceeds.
What investigators are examining
Authorities were investigating whether the operation drew electricity from infrastructure associated with a nearby hydroelectric system and whether cryptocurrency mining could have been used to conceal proceeds from illicit activity. Those are investigative questions, not established findings. The federal attorney’s office declined to comment to Reuters, citing the active investigation.

Is the mine confirmed to have cartel links?
No. Cartel involvement was suspected in some reporting and discussed by analysts, but public reporting has not identified the site’s operators or confirmed that a named cartel owned or ran it. Nor has it established that laundering took place or reported a final charging or court outcome.
Reuters quoted Mexico-based security analyst David Saucedo saying, “Drug cartels appear to have reached a new level of sophistication.” That is Saucedo’s broader assessment, not an official finding about this mine. Chainalysis Latin American specialist Caio Motta offered general context about how cheap electricity or organized-crime influence could enable large mining operations; his comments likewise do not prove what happened in Tlaola.

What the regional count does—and does not—show
Reuters described the Tlaola discovery as the fourth similar crypto farm found in the Sierra Norte region of Puebla since early 2025. It reported that three similar farms had been found near the hydroelectric dam the previous year. This is a count of reported discoveries; it does not establish that the operations were connected.
How to read the broader cryptocurrency-crime figures
Reuters reported Chainalysis estimates that addresses it linked to illicit activity received $154 billion in 2025, compared with $59 billion in 2024. Reuters said much of the increase was associated with sanctions evasion. These are global estimates, not figures for Mexico, cartel activity or the Tlaola site, and they cannot establish the source or destination of funds in this investigation.
Motta also said law-enforcement agencies are becoming better equipped to investigate organized crime involving cryptocurrency. That is expert commentary about investigative capabilities, not a result announced in the Puebla case.
