Choose digital if you want to download Metroid Dread directly to your Nintendo Switch and have enough free storage. Choose physical if you prefer a game card, may lend the game, or want the option of reselling your copy. The game itself is the same Switch release in both formats; the practical differences are storage, access, account ownership, and how flexible the copy is after purchase.
Nintendo lists both editions, but prices and stock change by country and retailer. Compare current local offers before buying rather than assuming one format is always cheaper.

Physical and digital Metroid Dread at a glance
| Consideration | Digital edition | Physical edition |
|---|---|---|
| How you receive it | Download to a Nintendo Switch console from Nintendo’s digital storefront or another authorized digital purchase route. | Buy a Nintendo Switch game card and insert it into the console when you want to play. |
| Download size | Nintendo lists the Nintendo Switch download at 4.3 GB on its 2026-accessed game information. | The game card supplies the main game, but available console storage can still matter for updates or other data. |
| Storage pressure | Requires at least the listed download space plus any space needed for system or game updates. A microSD card may be needed if the console does not have enough free space. | Usually uses less internal storage for the initial game data than a full download, but it is not a guarantee of zero storage use; updates can still require downloads. |
| Playing | After installation, start the game from the Home menu without inserting media. | The game card must be inserted whenever you play that copy. |
| Save data | Save data is stored in the console’s system memory and associated with the Nintendo Account and console. | Save data is not stored on the game card or microSD card, so the cartridge does not carry your progress. |
| Lending or resale | A digital account purchase generally is not transferable like a physical object. | You can potentially lend or resell the game card, subject to local law, retailer policy, and the condition of the copy. |
| Availability | Download availability depends on the Nintendo eShop serving your region. | Nintendo lists a physical edition through its Nintendo Store in certain locations; market availability varies. |
Neither format includes a different story or campaign. The choice is about how you acquire, store, access, and eventually dispose of the game.

What Nintendo actually sells
Nintendo’s official buying information identifies two ways to get Metroid Dread for the Switch family: a direct digital download and a physical edition supplied on a game card. The physical listing is tied to the locations served by Nintendo’s store, so a listing in one country does not establish stock in another. Digital storefront catalogs and local retail inventory can also differ.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That regional distinction matters when comparing totals. A digital price shown in one eShop region, a physical price from an overseas seller, and a used listing in your local currency are not equivalent offers until you include taxes, shipping, import costs, delivery time, and return terms. Check the storefront and retailers available to your own Nintendo Account and address.
When the digital edition is the better fit
You want the fastest, simplest setup
Digital removes the need to wait for delivery or visit a store. After purchase, the console downloads the game and places it on the Home menu. This is useful if you buy late at night, travel with the console, or switch frequently between several games and do not want to keep changing cards.
The convenience continues after installation: you can launch Metroid Dread whenever the console has the title installed. You do not have to remember where the cartridge is, keep a case in a travel bag, or protect a small card from being misplaced.

Nintendo lists the download at 4.3 GB. Treat that as the published size for the Switch download, not as a promise that every installation will occupy exactly that amount forever. Updates and console-management data can change the space required.
Before purchasing, open the Switch’s storage-management screen and check available space in system memory and on the inserted microSD card, if you use one. If the free space is below the listed download size, plan to archive another title, move data where the console permits, or install a larger microSD card. Nintendo’s support guidance makes the key point: whether a card is necessary depends on what storage your particular console has available.
You accept account-based access
A digital purchase is tied to the Nintendo Account that bought it and is accessed through compatible consoles under Nintendo’s account rules. That makes the purchase convenient for your own systems, but it is not a physical object that you can hand to another person and later reclaim in the same way as a game card.

Digital ownership should therefore be evaluated alongside your long-term account plans. Keep your Nintendo Account credentials secure, use the account you intend to retain, and understand that changing consoles does not turn the purchase into a transferable cartridge.
You are considering a Nintendo Switch Game Voucher
Nintendo’s U.S. buying page describes Game Vouchers as another possible digital route. The option requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, gives a 12-month redemption window, and draws from an eligible-game catalog that can change. Those conditions apply to the voucher program, not to an ordinary direct purchase of Metroid Dread from the eShop.
Check the voucher’s current terms, your account region, the membership requirement, and whether Metroid Dread is eligible at the moment you plan to redeem it. A voucher can alter the effective cost only when all of those conditions work for you.
When the physical edition is the better fit
You value a tangible game card
The physical version gives you a cartridge and packaging you can store, carry, display, or use without downloading the complete game before the first launch. You still need the card inserted to play that copy, so the benefit is tangible ownership rather than a completely media-free experience.
Keep the card in its case when it is not in the console. A digital library cannot be misplaced in a drawer, while a physical copy can, so the convenience trade-off depends on which kind of friction bothers you more.
You may lend or resell the copy
A game card is a movable object. You can potentially lend it to a family member or friend, then get it back, and you can offer it for resale later. The practical value depends on local demand, the condition of the card and case, and the rules of the marketplace; no universal resale price follows from choosing physical.

Digital purchases generally do not provide that same hand-to-hand flexibility. If you regularly finish games and pass them on, physical is the only format of these two that supports that kind of transaction in the ordinary sense.
You want to conserve internal storage
Because the physical card supplies the principal game data, it can reduce the amount of initial download storage compared with the 4.3 GB digital listing. Do not interpret that as “no storage required.” Nintendo notes that updates and other data may still require free space, and a card does not eliminate every download.
You find a better local offer
Physical copies can appear as new or used listings at different prices, while digital pricing is controlled by the storefront serving your account. A local sale, a reputable used copy, or a voucher may change the calculation from week to week. Compare the complete delivered cost and the seller’s return policy rather than relying on an old headline price.

Digital storage planning
- Check free space. On the Switch, open System Settings and the Data Management section to view available system and microSD capacity.
- Compare the number with 4.3 GB. That is Nintendo’s listed Switch download size accessed in 2026. Leave additional room when possible because updates and other system data may need space.
- Choose a storage action if necessary. Archive software you can redownload, move data using the console’s available management options, or add a compatible microSD card.
- Start the download on a reliable connection. Keep the console powered and connected until the installation completes; the required time depends on your connection and Nintendo’s service conditions.
Physical storage planning
- Confirm the package is for your Switch family and region. Regional labeling and retailer return rules matter, especially when buying from another market.
- Insert the card and start the game. The console reads the game card, so keep it inserted for every session with that copy.
- Allow room for updates. If the console asks for additional storage, follow the Data Management prompts or make space on the microSD card.
- Store the card safely. Your ability to play depends on having the physical media available and readable.
Save data and moving between consoles
The format does not determine where Metroid Dread progress lives. Nintendo’s support information says Switch save data is kept in system memory, not on the game card or microSD card. It is associated with the Nintendo Account and console, so buying the cartridge does not create a backup of your progress on the cartridge.
This distinction is important when you replace a console, use more than one console, or switch from a digital copy to a physical one. The game card is a license-and-data medium for launching the game; it is not a removable save file. Follow Nintendo’s current account and console-transfer procedures when moving to another system, and verify that the account containing your progress is the one you use on the destination console.
Modes and Switch-family compatibility
Nintendo lists Metroid Dread for TV, tabletop, and handheld modes. The same three modes let you choose between a television, a propped-up console with separate controllers, or direct handheld play, subject to the capabilities of your hardware and controllers.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Nintendo also lists consistent behavior on Switch 2. That does not change the format decision: a digital purchase remains a download and a physical purchase remains a game card. Nintendo notes that compatibility and the experience may differ on Switch Lite, so Lite owners should check the current official compatibility information for their specific setup before buying accessories or assuming every mode is available in the same way.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrices, stock, and the right way to compare them
There is no universal price winner established for all regions and dates. Nintendo’s pages confirm the editions but do not establish a current worldwide price, a permanent discount, or physical stock in every market. Prices can change independently in an eShop and at retailers, and a used copy introduces condition and seller variables.
Use this comparison process on the day you buy:
- Identify your region. Use the Nintendo Account region and retailers that can legally and reliably deliver to you.
- Record the full digital total. Include the displayed price and any taxes applied at checkout.
- Record the full physical total. Add shipping, tax, possible import charges, and the value of waiting for delivery.
- Check condition and returns. For used copies, verify that the listing includes the game card and understand the seller’s return policy.
- Check availability, not just a search result. A product page without stock confirmation is not proof that you can receive the game.
- Recheck voucher eligibility. If you plan to use a Game Voucher, confirm the paid Nintendo Switch Online requirement, the 12-month redemption period, and current catalog eligibility.
Do not use an expired sale price to justify a format. A small difference today may disappear in the next promotion, while the storage and ownership characteristics remain.
What the format choice does not change
- The game content: Nintendo’s physical and digital listings are two distribution formats for Metroid Dread on Nintendo Switch.
- Save location: Progress is held in system memory and linked to the account and console rather than the card or microSD.
- Optional amiibo support: The Samus and E.M.M.I. amiibo are accessories, not requirements for either edition.
- Basic play modes: Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play for the Switch release.
Amiibo: useful extra, not a purchase requirement
Nintendo describes optional Samus and E.M.M.I. amiibo benefits, including bonus health and missile-related effects. These figures are not needed to start, finish, or save Metroid Dread, and they do not determine whether you should buy the game digitally or physically.
If you already own compatible figures, treat their functions as an extra. If you do not own them, include their separate cost only if those bonuses matter to your play style; do not add them to the core game budget by default.
Decision guide by player type
| Your priority | More suitable format | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Play immediately without waiting for delivery | Digital | Purchase and download directly through the storefront. |
| Switch among several games without changing cards | Digital | Installed software launches from the Home menu. |
| Limited internal storage and no microSD space available | Physical, with a storage check | The card can reduce initial download storage, but updates may still need free space. |
| Want to lend the game | Physical | The game card can be handed to another person. |
| May resell after finishing | Physical | A physical copy can be listed for resale; value is market-dependent. |
| Prefer not to keep track of small media | Digital | No card is needed after installation. |
| Prefer a collectible case and cartridge | Physical | You receive tangible media and packaging. |
| Considering a Game Voucher in the United States | Digital, if eligible | The voucher route has a paid Nintendo Switch Online requirement, a 12-month redemption window, and a changing eligible catalog. |
| Unsure which is cheaper | Compare local offers | Official information does not establish a permanent regional price winner. |
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming physical means no download
The game card does not guarantee that every file will remain on the card forever. Updates can require downloads and free console or microSD space. Check the console’s prompt instead of rejecting an update because you bought physical.

Expecting the cartridge to contain your save
Save data is stored in system memory and tied to the account and console. Keep the console and account-transfer details in mind when lending or selling the card; handing over the cartridge does not hand over your progress.
Confusing voucher rules with ordinary digital purchases
The paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, 12-month redemption window, and changing eligible catalog are conditions described for the Game Voucher route. They are not a requirement to buy Metroid Dread as a normal eShop download.
Using another region’s price as your benchmark
A foreign listing may have different taxes, currency conversion, shipping, warranty, language, or account restrictions. Compare offers you can actually purchase and return in your market.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Buying amiibo because you think they are required
The Samus and E.M.M.I. figures provide optional bonuses. They are not prerequisites for either version of the game.
The practical recommendation
Buy the digital edition when immediate access, a card-free library, and easy switching between installed games outweigh the need to preserve several gigabytes of storage. Confirm that your console has room for Nintendo’s listed 4.3 GB download and possible updates before checkout.
Buy the physical edition when you want a game card, expect to lend or resell the copy, or have a compelling local physical offer. Keep in mind that you must insert the card to play and may still need storage for updates.
When neither preference is strong, compare the live price and availability in your region on the day you purchase. The edition that best matches your storage situation and ownership habits is the better buy; neither format is categorically superior for every Switch owner.
