As of October 13, the update has been announced but is not yet released. Deep Silver promises a choice between true 4K at 60 frames per second and upscaled 4K at 120 fps, along with upgraded lighting, shadows, particles, hardware tessellation and displacement. Those are announced targets, not independent measurements.
The upgrade is free for people who already own either Redux game. New buyers receive the updated version when purchasing either title. The update preserves the Redux games rather than remaking them, and it does not add ray tracing.

Release date, ownership and what is available now
Deep Silver and PLAION have announced the native console update for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux for October 29, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Japan is listed for a November release. Until that date, descriptions of 4K, 120-fps output and the new rendering features refer to the planned update, not software that players can already download.
Existing owners do not need to buy a separate upgrade. PLAION says the update is free for owners of either game. A new customer who buys either Redux release receives the updated version when it becomes available. Current store listings remain useful for understanding the editions sold today, but they should not be confused with the forthcoming native build.
#1 Best Overall
Current Xbox editions
The Xbox Store lists both Redux games as playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The Metro 2033 Redux listing identifies FPS Boost capability. These listings describe backward-compatible prior-generation editions available before the native update arrives. Xbox also lists the games individually and as a two-game bundle.
Current PlayStation editions
The PlayStation Store lists Metro: Last Light Redux as a PS4 title playable on PS5 and warns that some PS4 features may be absent. That is backward compatibility, not evidence that the native PS5 patch has already launched.
What Metro Redux contains
“Metro Redux” refers to two separate games: Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux. PLAION describes Metro 2033 Redux as rebuilt in the 4A Engine, with gameplay improvements carried over from Last Light, including changes to artificial intelligence, controls, animation and weapon handling. The Xbox Store treats the games as distinct releases and also offers a bundle.
The series is set in a post-apocalyptic Moscow metro, but the upcoming update is not presented as a new version of the story, missions or overall art direction. Deep Silver says the original Redux experience and aesthetic are preserved. The publisher describes the work as careful hardware-focused improvements rather than a full remaster or remake. The franchise had reached 50 million copies sold worldwide by the time of the 2026 announcement, according to Deep Silver.
Resolution and frame-rate modes announced for PS5 and Xbox Series
Deep Silver has announced two headline output targets for the native update:
Rank #2
- Immerse yourself in the Moscow Metro - witness one of the most atmospheric worlds in gaming brought to life with stunning next-gen visuals at 60FPS
- Rebuilt and Remastered for next gen - with all previous DLC content included, new modes and features, and many gameplay improvements
- Two campaigns, and all DLC included - Metro Redux includes two complete campaigns that combine to create one epic solo adventure, plus a further 10 hours of bonus content
- Two unique Play Styles : 'Spartan' and 'Survival'
- The legendary Ranger Mode returns - dare you play the fearsome Ranger Mode?
| Announced mode | Publisher target | What you need to use it | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality-oriented mode | True 4K at 60 fps | A compatible PS5 or Xbox Series console and display | Announced target; no independent measurements published by October 13, 2026 |
| High-refresh mode | Upscaled 4K at 120 fps | A compatible 120 Hz television or monitor, plus a supported console setup | Announced target; the announcement does not document frame pacing or sustained performance |
“True 4K” and “upscaled 4K” are not interchangeable. The first describes the publisher’s 60-fps target as true 4K; the second describes a 120-fps target reconstructed or scaled to a 4K output. The announcement does not state whether either mode uses dynamic resolution, what internal resolution is used during heavy scenes, or how often the game holds its target.
A 120-fps option only helps when the display can accept a 120 Hz signal. On a 60 Hz television, the game cannot show 120 unique frames per second. Deep Silver specifically conditions the 120-fps mode on compatible monitor or television hardware. The announcement does not identify a particular display model, HDMI configuration or variable-refresh requirement.
Platform-specific features
The announced update shares its main resolution and frame-rate goals across the current consoles, but the publisher lists different system features for each platform.
| Platform | Documented update feature | What is not documented |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | DualSense adaptive triggers; PlayStation power-saver mode | Separate PS5 resolution, frame-pacing or stability measurements |
| PS5 Pro | PSSR support, in addition to the PlayStation features listed for PS5 | A measured PSSR resolution range or a Pro-specific frame-rate result |
| Xbox Series X | TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing; spatial audio on Xbox platforms; Xbox impulse triggers; Xbox power-optimized mode | Measured internal resolution, frame pacing or image-quality comparisons |
| Xbox Series S | Included in the native Xbox Series X|S update announcement | Separate Series S resolution, mode selection, frame rate, image quality or stability details |
PSSR is Sony’s reconstruction technology, and TSR is the upscaling and anti-aliasing solution named for Xbox Series X. Their inclusion does not, by itself, establish that one console produces a sharper or more stable image. A fair comparison requires identical scenes, capture settings and measurements after release.
Spatial audio is listed for Xbox platforms. On PlayStation, the documented controller feature is DualSense adaptive triggers. Xbox players are also promised impulse-trigger support. These are input and audio features, not additional evidence about output resolution.

Graphics improvements without a remake
The update is intended to make use of newer console hardware while retaining the Redux look. Deep Silver lists higher-quality lighting, shadows and particle effects, plus runtime hardware tessellation and displacement. Tessellation can add geometric detail while a scene is rendered; displacement can alter the apparent surface shape. The announcement does not provide polygon counts, texture-resolution figures or before-and-after screenshots that would support a numerical image-quality claim.

It also explains why the publisher calls the update an enhancement to the Redux experience instead of a full remaster or remake.
Ray tracing is not included
PLAION’s support FAQ answers the ray-tracing question directly: “No, this is a much larger job that would require a deeper reworking of our render.” The native update therefore should not be described as a ray-traced edition. Higher-quality lighting and shadows are separate promises and do not imply hardware ray tracing.
How the forthcoming update differs from the games playable today
Before October 29, PS5 owners generally access the PS4 edition through backward compatibility, while Xbox Series owners can run the Xbox One editions. Those versions may benefit from platform compatibility features such as the FPS Boost designation on Metro 2033 Redux for Xbox, but the available listings do not establish the new update’s 4K or 120-fps targets.
The native update is a separate change in the rendering and platform integration layer. It adds the newly announced lighting, shadow, particle, tessellation and displacement improvements, along with the platform-specific reconstruction and controller features. Ownership carries forward through the free upgrade rather than requiring a second purchase.

Historical performance context
A 2014 GameSpot report attributed launch-era claims to Deep Silver of 1080p on PS4 and 60 fps on both PS4 and Xbox One. The report said Xbox One resolution was unconfirmed. Those statements describe the original console launch period; they are not measurements of the current Xbox Series editions and cannot be used to claim an exact Series X or Series S resolution.
The historical figures are useful only as a baseline for how far the announced 2026 targets have moved. They do not reveal whether the new modes use a fixed or dynamic resolution, how the consoles divide rendering work, or whether the 120-fps target is maintained in every scene.
What is still unknown before launch
Deep Silver says full technical patch notes will be provided at launch. As of October 13, the available announcement and FAQ do not provide:
- Independent native-resolution measurements for PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S.
- Dynamic-resolution ranges or the internal render resolution behind the upscaled 4K mode.
- Frame-time graphs, frame-pacing analysis or sustained-performance results during demanding scenes.
- A separate Series S mode table or a confirmed 120-fps mode for that console.
- Detailed settings for variable refresh rate, HDR, HDMI bandwidth or display requirements beyond the need for compatible hardware for 120 fps.
- Comparative image-quality tests showing how PSSR and TSR behave in motion, in dark corridors or during effects-heavy combat.
Those gaps are important. A mode label describes an intended output, not how consistently a game reaches it. Any post-launch comparison should test the four current console variants separately and report resolution behavior, frame pacing, image quality and stability rather than repeating the headline targets.

You already own a Redux game
Keep the existing license and claim the native update when it arrives. PLAION says the upgrade is free, so buying the game again is unnecessary. Check that the console account holding the license is the account used to download the update.

You are buying for the first time
Choose the individual game you want or the Xbox two-game bundle if you want both campaigns. New purchasers receive the updated version, but the update is tied to the announced release schedule. Current price, stock and physical-edition availability are not established by the published technical announcement.
You have a 120 Hz display
The high-refresh mode is the relevant announced option, but the display must accept a 120 Hz signal. Select the game’s 120-fps mode only after confirming that the console and television or monitor are configured for the required refresh rate. Do not assume that a 4K television automatically supports 4K at 120 Hz.
You use PS5 Pro
PSSR support is the specific Pro feature named by the publisher. It may help reconstruction quality, but no measured Pro resolution or frame-rate advantage has been published before launch.

You use Xbox Series S
Series S is included in the update announcement, but no Series S-specific resolution, frame-rate or settings information is available. Wait for the launch notes or measured testing before choosing a mode based on assumptions about Series X performance.
Practical checklist for launch day
- Confirm that your console is a PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S and that the game is the Redux edition.
- Install the native update when it appears on October 29, 2026, or during the November Japanese rollout.
- Verify that your display supports the refresh rate you intend to use, especially for the announced 120-fps mode.
- Choose between the announced true-4K/60-fps and upscaled-4K/120-fps targets according to your display and preference.
- Enable the relevant console features: DualSense adaptive triggers on PS5, PSSR on PS5 Pro where offered, or Xbox audio and impulse-trigger options on supported hardware.
- Judge the final result from the released patch notes and actual play, because pre-launch targets do not establish dynamic resolution, frame pacing or stability.
Bottom line on PS5 versus Xbox Series X|S
On paper, the native update brings both console families to the same headline choice: true 4K at 60 fps or upscaled 4K at 120 fps, provided the display supports the faster mode. PS5 adds DualSense features, PS5 Pro adds PSSR, and Xbox lists TSR, anti-aliasing, spatial audio, impulse triggers and power-optimized operation. The announcement does not establish a winner in sharpness or consistency, and it gives no separate Series S performance profile.
The clearest buying decision is therefore practical rather than numerical. Existing owners get the update free; new buyers receive it with either game; a 120 Hz display is required for the 120-fps target; and ray tracing is absent. For definitive claims about resolution behavior or frame pacing, wait for the October 29 release and measurements made on each console model.
