Metropolitan-area Ethernet, usually called Metro Ethernet, is Ethernet-based connectivity delivered across a provider’s metropolitan network to connect two or more customer locations. It lets offices, branches, or campus sites communicate over an inter-site network rather than relying only on each location’s local Ethernet LAN. The term describes a service approach—not a specific speed, topology, performance guarantee, or provider.
What Metro Ethernet means
Metro Ethernet extends Ethernet connectivity across a metropolitan network. A customer can use it to link separate locations, such as offices or clinical practices, so those sites can reach shared internal resources or other networks. The California Department of Technology describes its metropolitan-area offering as switched Ethernet point-to-point and multipoint LAN services that let customers connect two or more locations in its 2026 CALNET Category 23 technical requirements. Weill Cornell Medicine likewise describes Metro Ethernet as a way to connect remote offices and clinical practices to internal resources and the Internet.

“Metropolitan” describes the network’s service context; it does not guarantee that every location in a city or region can be served. Availability depends on the provider and the specific sites. Nor does the name alone tell you the bandwidth, physical route, resilience, or service-level commitments.
How the connection can be arranged
Providers can structure Metro Ethernet in different ways. The California procurement specification gives examples of service designs; these are not universal features of every provider’s offer.

Point-to-point
A point-to-point service creates a logical Ethernet connection between two locations. In the California specification, Ethernet Private Line (EPL) is defined this way, including connections between two customer locations or between a customer and certain provider locations.
Multipoint and virtual connections
A multipoint design can connect more than two sites. The specification describes Ethernet virtual connections (EVCs) that associate two or more user-to-network interfaces. Its Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) service can multiplex multiple EVCs on one customer interface. Whether an offer supports this arrangement, and how it separates traffic, must be confirmed in the service design and contract.

Interfaces and traffic handling
The same procurement specifies full-duplex Ethernet interfaces, VLAN tag handling, and multiple classes of service. Those details illustrate what a buyer can define contractually; they are not inherent promises of all Metro Ethernet services.

Metro Ethernet, Carrier Ethernet, and SD-WAN
These terms describe related but different parts of a network. Mplify, formerly the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF), includes Carrier Ethernet among its underlay connectivity service standards. An underlay supplies network connectivity; an overlay such as SD-WAN can operate above that connectivity to manage or steer traffic. Buying Metro Ethernet does not, by itself, mean that managed routing or SD-WAN is included.

What to check in a provider offer
The label alone is not enough to compare services. Ask the provider to specify the following for the locations and configuration you need:
- Site coverage: Which exact addresses can be served, and what geographic reach does the service have?
- Topology: Is the connection point-to-point or multipoint? Can multiple virtual connections share one customer interface?
- Interfaces and capacity: What interface types and bandwidths are available, and what committed information rate applies?
- Traffic classes: Are classes of service offered, and which traffic receives differentiated treatment?
- Performance measures: Are latency, jitter, packet loss, and availability specified? Check the measurement method, endpoints, geography, and any exclusions.
- Resilience and operations: What redundancy, monitoring, support hours, maintenance windows, and repair commitments are included?
- Service boundary: Is this a Layer 2 Ethernet service, an IP-routed service, or a bundle that includes managed routing?
These are contract questions, not values that can be inferred from “Metro Ethernet.” Availability, current pricing, and enforceable performance commitments require a location-specific provider quote.

Example: contract-specific performance objectives
The 2026 California Department of Technology CALNET Category 23 technical requirements state the following objectives for distances within 250 network miles. They are examples from that procurement, not market-wide Metro Ethernet statistics or guarantees for other customers.

These figures are objectives stated by the California Department of Technology for the specified classes and distance. A prospective customer should rely on the service-level terms in their own contract, including how each metric is measured and what remedies apply if it is missed.
