methods.dll Is Missing or Not Found: How to Fix It on Windows 11 and 10

Do not download a random copy of methods.dll. The filename is not established in Microsoft’s Windows 10 or Windows 11 documentation as a standard system component. Search evidence shows the same name used by unrelated software, including R for Windows package files and One Identity Manager build output. The correct repair depends on the program that reported the error.

First identify that program and capture its full error text. Then repair Windows with DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth followed by sfc /scannow from an elevated Terminal. If only one application fails, use that application’s Repair or Reset option and, if necessary, reinstall its current version from the official publisher. A DLL-download archive cannot know which product, version or processor architecture your copy requires.

What “methods.dll is missing” actually means

A dynamic-link library (DLL) contains code that another program loads while it runs. When Windows displays “methods.dll was not found,” “methods.dll is missing,” or a similar message, the failing program requested a library that was unavailable, inaccessible or incompatible at that moment. The message identifies a filename, not the software that owns it.

methods.dll is not identified in the reviewed Microsoft documentation as a built-in Windows 10 or Windows 11 component. The same filename appears in unrelated products: search evidence associates it with package files for R on Windows and with One Identity Manager build output. A file from one product is not interchangeable with a file from the other. Treat the error as application-specific until you know which program raised it.

Windows also protects its own system DLLs from unauthorized replacement. Copying a similarly named file into a protected folder can therefore fail to solve the original problem and can create a new dependency or security problem.

Identify the program before changing any file

The exact application, DLL build, architecture and trigger are unresolved from the filename alone. Record those details before attempting a download or replacement.

Read the complete dialog

Note the application name, the sentence around methods.dll, and any path or error code. A launcher, plug-in host or installer may display the message on behalf of another component. Take a screenshot if the dialog disappears quickly.

Find the failing executable

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and look for the program you launched immediately before the message appeared.
  2. For a desktop shortcut, right-click it, choose Properties, and inspect the Target path. The folder containing that executable is usually the first place the application expects its private DLLs.
  3. If the message appears during startup, open Task Manager and use the Startup apps tab to identify the entry. Disable only the suspected entry temporarily, restart, and see whether the message disappears.
  4. For a crash that closes before you can read it, open Event Viewer (right-click Start, then choose Event Viewer) and inspect Windows Logs > Application for an error at the same time. The event may list the faulting application and module.
  5. You can also open Reliability Monitor by pressing Win, typing reliability, and selecting View reliability history. Select the red failure marker for the date and time of the problem to see which executable stopped.

Do not assume that every copy of methods.dll on your disk belongs to the program in the error. If you find one, use its file Properties dialog to record the publisher, product version and location; do not overwrite it.

Choose the repair scope

Symptom Most likely scope First action Data impact
One named application fails; other programs work That application’s installation or private dependency Repair or Reset the app, then reinstall from its publisher if needed Repair normally preserves data; Reset or reinstall can remove settings, plug-ins or sign-in state
Several unrelated programs fail with DLL messages Windows component store or protected system files Run DISM, then SFC, from an administrator terminal These commands target Windows components, not your personal documents
Failure began after an update or interrupted installation Incomplete servicing or application installation Finish the update, restart, then run the appropriate repair sequence Usually no document change; application repair may still reset settings
You found a DLL on an unverified website Unknown source and unknown product match Do not use it; obtain files through Windows repair or the owning publisher A mismatched file can introduce new crashes or security exposure

This distinction prevents a Windows-wide repair from being used as a substitute for reinstalling one damaged application, and prevents an application DLL from being treated as a Windows system file.

Run Microsoft’s Windows repair sequence

Use this sequence when more than one program is affected, Windows components are behaving abnormally, or the application publisher’s installer reports missing system files. Microsoft’s order matters: DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source.

  1. Save work and close programs. The commands can run while you wait, but closing applications avoids locked files and makes the restart predictable.
  2. Open an elevated terminal. Right-click Start and choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt. If Terminal is unavailable, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Run DISM. Enter DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter. The command checks the running Windows image and repairs its component store. Microsoft describes DISM as providing the files required to repair corrupted files.
  4. Wait for completion. Progress can remain at one percentage for a long time. Do not close the window, power off the PC or force a restart. A successful run reports that the restore operation completed; if it reports that source files could not be found, follow the media section below instead of copying a DLL.
  5. Run System File Checker. In the same administrator window, enter sfc /scannow. Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Microsoft says this command scans protected system files and replaces corrupted files with a cached copy.
  6. Read the result. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found corruption it could not repair. Record the wording. If it repaired files, restart before testing the application.
  7. Restart Windows. Choose Start > Power > Restart, not merely closing the terminal. Launch the program again and check whether the same full message appears.

Running SFC before DISM can leave SFC without a healthy source for replacement files. If you already ran SFC first, run DISM now and then repeat SFC.

When DISM cannot find repair files

DISM normally obtains repair content through Windows servicing. If Windows Update cannot provide it, Microsoft supports using a running Windows installation or a Windows side-by-side folder on removable installation media as the source.

Prepare matching installation media

  • Use media for the same Windows family (10 or 11), language, edition and compatible build as the installed system. A source for a different edition can be rejected or produce an unsuitable repair.
  • A USB flash drive is useful for creating or carrying that installation/recovery media. It is not a universal source for methods.dll.
  • Back up files on the USB drive before creating installation media; the creation process can erase the drive.

Use the source with DISM

Connect the media, note its drive letter, and use the DISM repair-source options documented for that media’s WIM or ESD image. The required image index depends on the edition, so do not guess an index or substitute a file from another release. If the source is accepted, rerun the same DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth operation with that source specified, then run sfc /scannow again and restart.

If the command still fails, preserve the DISM error text and the Windows edition/build shown under Settings > System > About. Those details let Microsoft or the PC maker identify a source mismatch without guessing.

Repair the application that reports the error

When one identifiable program fails while Windows and other software operate normally, repair that program before changing system folders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the built-in Repair option

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds).
  2. Find the affected application, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options when available.
  3. Select Repair. This attempts to correct installation files without removing the application’s data. Launch the program after the operation finishes.
  4. If Repair does not help, return to the same page and use Reset only after reading the warning. Reset can remove the application’s local settings, cached data or sign-in state while leaving Windows itself intact.

Some classic desktop programs expose the equivalent controls elsewhere. Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the application, and look for Change, Repair or Modify.

Uninstall and reinstall from the publisher

  1. Back up projects, templates, saved games and other application data according to that publisher’s instructions.
  2. Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or its official uninstaller.
  3. Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it, or restart before installing again if the program supplied drivers or shell extensions.
  4. Download the current installer only from the software publisher’s official site or a trusted store used by that publisher. Select the installer for your Windows version and processor architecture when choices are offered.
  5. Install, restart if requested, and test before restoring optional plug-ins. If the error returns after a plug-in is added, that plug-in or its version is the likely owner of the missing dependency.

Do not copy a DLL from another computer unless the publisher explicitly instructs you to use that exact file for the same product version and architecture. Even two PCs running Windows 11 can have different application builds.

Why downloading methods.dll is unsafe

DLL archives generally cannot verify which product owns a reused filename, whether the file matches your application’s release, or whether it has been modified. Placing an arbitrary file in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64 or an application directory can cause a different dependency error, load code from an untrusted source, or break an update that expects the publisher’s signed package.

The correct sources are narrowly defined:

  • Windows component files: DISM and SFC, using Windows Update or matching installation media.
  • Application-private files: the owning application’s Repair function or its official installer.
  • Publisher support: the vendor can identify the required build when the filename is reused across products.

Do not register methods.dll with regsvr32 as a generic fix. Most DLLs are not COM registration libraries, and registration cannot create a missing dependency or make an incompatible binary match your application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check architecture and file location

A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application can require different builds of a library. The path in the error and the application’s installer choice are more useful than the filename alone. Keep a record of whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit, the application version, and the exact Windows build. If the publisher offers separate x86, x64 or ARM installers, use the one matching the program and device.

Search the application’s own installation folder and its documented plug-in folders first. Finding a file with the same name elsewhere on the disk does not establish ownership. Avoid moving, renaming or deleting DLLs while troubleshooting; such changes can make the original failure harder to reproduce and can invalidate support instructions.

If the error survives every repair

Contact the application publisher

Provide the publisher with the complete dialog text, application version, Windows edition/build, processor architecture, installation path, Event Viewer or Reliability Monitor entry, and the results of DISM and SFC. Ask which package supplies methods.dll for that exact release. This is the only reliable way to resolve an application-specific filename reused by unrelated products.

Consider Windows recovery only for Windows-wide damage

If several Windows applications continue to fail after DISM and SFC, back up important files and review Windows recovery options. Microsoft lists reinstalling Windows 11 with Reset this PC (keep my files) as a possibility when the preceding steps do not resolve an application problem. Read the reset screen carefully: installed applications and many settings are removed even when personal files are retained, and available options vary by Windows edition and configuration.

Repair choices at a glance

Remedy Scope Trusted file source Dependency match When to choose it
DISM followed by SFC Windows-wide protected components Windows Update or matching installation media Matches the running Windows image Multiple programs fail or Windows integrity is suspect
Application Repair One installed application The application’s own installation data Uses that product’s installed version Repair is offered and you want to preserve local data
Application Reset One installed application The application’s installed package Recreates the app’s package state Repair failed and you accept loss of local settings or cache
Publisher reinstall One application or plug-in Official current installer Choose the exact edition and architecture Files are incomplete, corrupted or removed
Random DLL download Undefined Unknown archive Cannot be verified Do not use

As an optional shortcut after these manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check selected vulnerabilities, and provide tools such as a real-time boost and crash log.
