Methane Pyrolysis vs. Steam Reforming: Emissions, Energy Use, and Product Trade-offs

Methane pyrolysis is not automatically cleaner than steam methane reforming (SMR). Pyrolysis splits methane into hydrogen and solid carbon, avoiding process carbon dioxide in the ideal reaction. SMR converts methane and steam into hydrogen, carbon monoxide and then carbon dioxide. The better climate outcome depends on methane leakage, electricity and heat sources, methane conversion, carbon capture, and what happens to the solid carbon.

For an honest comparison, use the same functional unit and lifecycle boundary for both routes. A plant-gate result that excludes compression, delivery or upstream gas emissions can produce a very different ranking from a delivered-hydrogen assessment.

How the two hydrogen routes work

Methane pyrolysis

Methane pyrolysis uses high-temperature heat to decompose methane (CH4) into hydrogen (H2) and solid carbon. The ideal decomposition reaction does not create a process CO2 stream. That does not make the route emissions-free: reactor heat, electricity, gas production and transport, methane that escapes conversion, and management of the carbon coproduct all affect lifecycle emissions.

Reactor designs differ. Some use electricity-intensive plasma systems; others supply heat in different ways. Those design choices determine how much electricity is consumed, how completely methane is converted, what grade of solid carbon is produced, and whether unconverted methane must be recycled or treated.

Steam methane reforming

SMR reacts methane with steam to form hydrogen and carbon monoxide. A subsequent water-gas-shift reaction converts carbon monoxide and water into additional hydrogen and CO2. The plant also burns fuel to provide process heat, creating another source of CO2. Hydrogen purification, steam generation and compression add to the plant’s energy demand.

Carbon in SMR therefore leaves mainly in gaseous process and furnace streams. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) can remove some of that CO2, but the result depends on which streams are captured, the capture rate and whether compression and storage are included in the reported boundary.

Side-by-side comparison

Dimension Methane pyrolysis Steam methane reforming
Core transformation Methane is decomposed into hydrogen and solid carbon. Methane reacts with steam to make hydrogen and carbon monoxide; shift conversion makes additional hydrogen and CO2.
Carbon at the plant Solid carbon coproduct; the ideal decomposition reaction itself forms no process CO2. CO2 in process gas plus furnace/flue emissions; capture can address only the streams included in the system design.
Main lifecycle drivers Electricity and heat carbon intensity, natural-gas leakage, methane conversion, reactor design, and carbon allocation or displacement credit. Feedstock and furnace fuel, upstream methane leakage, process configuration, and the capture rate and boundary where CCS is used.
Energy framing Requires high-temperature heat and, for some designs, substantial electricity. The IEA’s 2021 review reports 40–45% overall methane-and-electricity-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency for the cases it discusses. Uses methane as feedstock and heat source, requires steam, and may require energy for CO2 separation, compression and storage.
Carbon handling Potentially marketable solid carbon, but quality, end use and market capacity determine whether it has value or becomes a disposal burden. CO2 is principally a waste stream unless captured and stored or used; upstream emissions remain outside a point-source capture system.
Technology status Emerging, with several reactor concepts and unresolved scale-up and coproduct-market questions. Mature incumbent technology with established industrial operating experience.

These are process distinctions, not universal performance guarantees. A specific pyrolysis plant and a specific SMR facility must be compared using matched assumptions.

Which route has lower lifecycle emissions?

There is no single answer independent of the boundary. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that unabated natural-gas hydrogen has an emissions intensity of 10–14 kg CO2-equivalent per kilogram of hydrogen in its 2023 analysis. That range includes upstream and midstream methane and CO2 emissions of about 1–5 kg CO2-equivalent per kilogram of hydrogen. The IEA’s 2024 discussion of 2023 production gives a closely related unabated-natural-gas range of 10–12 kg CO2-equivalent per kilogram of hydrogen.

Those figures describe natural-gas hydrogen, not every SMR plant and not every pyrolysis configuration. An SMR facility with CCS can lower captured process emissions, while an SMR facility using leaky gas and fossil heat can remain substantially more emissions-intensive. Conversely, a pyrolysis system powered by carbon-intensive electricity or supplied by gas with high leakage can lose much of its potential advantage.

The IEA estimates 920 million tonnes of CO2 were emitted by global hydrogen production in 2023, with nearly two-thirds of production coming from unabated natural gas. This system-level figure illustrates why both plant emissions and upstream fuel emissions matter when evaluating a route.

Why methane leakage changes both results

Methane is the feedstock for pyrolysis and SMR, so both routes inherit emissions from gas extraction, processing and transport. Leakage can occur before the gas reaches the hydrogen plant and is not removed by capturing CO2 at an SMR reformer. A low-leakage supply can materially improve either pathway; a high-leakage supply can undermine a project advertised as low-carbon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lifecycle reports should state the gas source, leakage assumption and measurement or modelling basis. “Natural gas” is not one emissions profile: production region, infrastructure and accounting method change the result.

What CCS changes—and what it does not

SMR with CCS can capture concentrated process CO2 and, in some designs, emissions from the reformer furnace. Capture performance should be reported stream by stream. A headline capture percentage that excludes dilute flue gas, hydrogen purification, compression or upstream gas emissions can overstate the reduction in delivered-hydrogen intensity.

Pyrolysis avoids a process CO2 stream in its ideal reaction, but it does not avoid emissions associated with energy, gas supply or incomplete conversion. Avoided process CO2 and zero lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions are different claims.

How much energy does methane pyrolysis use?

Pyrolysis needs high-temperature process energy. Plasma-based designs can draw substantial electricity, while other reactors may use a combination of electricity and direct or indirect heat. Reactor geometry, residence time, methane conversion, hydrogen purification and carbon removal all influence consumption.

The IEA’s 2021 review reports an overall 40–45% conversion efficiency from methane and electricity to hydrogen for the pyrolysis cases it discusses. Because that is an overall efficiency for particular cases, it should not be treated as a universal rating for every reactor design.

A 2026 life-cycle assessment of a plasma-arc case models approximately 38 kWh of electricity per kilogram of hydrogen and identifies electricity as the main emissions driver in that configuration. The same study reports 2.78 kg CO2-equivalent per kilogram of hydrogen under mass allocation between hydrogen and carbon black. Both numbers are case-specific: changing the electricity mix, reactor design, carbon product and allocation rule changes the outcome.

SMR’s energy accounting is different. Methane supplies both chemical feedstock and furnace heat, while steam generation and gas separation consume additional energy. Reports should make clear whether they include steam production, hydrogen purification, CO2 compression, storage, product compression and delivery. Comparing pyrolysis electricity use with SMR fuel use alone is not an apples-to-apples energy comparison.

What happens to the solid carbon?

It can be a product—or a liability

Pyrolysis produces a solid carbon stream whose properties depend on the reactor and operating conditions. Do not call every coproduct “carbon black”: that designation requires properties and quality suitable for the intended market. Material may instead be a lower-value carbon, a specialty feedstock or a waste requiring controlled handling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The IEA reported global carbon-black demand of 16 million tonnes in 2020 while discussing pyrolysis. That historical market size is much smaller than the potential carbon output from replacing a large share of existing hydrogen production. Even if a reactor makes a technically suitable product, demand, specifications, logistics and customer qualification limit how much can be sold.

How carbon accounting affects an LCA

There are several defensible ways to allocate pyrolysis burdens between hydrogen and solid carbon: mass allocation, energy or economic allocation, or a system-expansion approach that credits a demonstrably displaced product. Each method answers a different question.

An avoided-product credit is not automatic. It requires evidence that the coproduct replaces a market product with comparable function, quality and lifetime. If carbon is stockpiled, disposed of, or sold into a saturated market without displacing another product, applying a large credit can misrepresent the climate result. The carbon’s end use, durability and eventual emissions must be stated.

Results from a 2026 comparative study

A separate 2026 comparative life-cycle and cost study models pyrolysis at about 12.6 kg CO2-equivalent per kilogram of hydrogen at 100% methane conversion, without a carbon credit, for its stated cradle-to-gate case producing hydrogen at 200 bar. When it applies an avoided-product credit for carbon black, the result is near 5.1 kg CO2-equivalent per kilogram of hydrogen in its comparison with SMR plus CCS. The study reports that the credit-based advantage disappears below roughly 50–55% methane conversion.

These are model outputs, not guarantees. They depend on the study’s electricity demand, gas leakage, conversion, pressure, boundary and displaced-product assumptions. They should not be directly ranked against the IEA’s natural-gas range without aligning those assumptions.

How to make a fair route comparison

A credible assessment should publish the following information for both pathways:

  1. Functional unit: State whether results are per kilogram of hydrogen, per unit of delivered energy, or another basis. Specify hydrogen pressure and purity.
  2. Lifecycle boundary: Say whether the result is well-to-gate, cradle-to-gate, plant gate, or delivered hydrogen. Include or exclude compression, storage and distribution explicitly.
  3. Gas supply: Identify the natural-gas source and the upstream methane-leakage assumption.
  4. Energy inputs: Report electricity mix, heat source and the energy used for reactor heating, steam, purification and compression.
  5. Conversion and efficiency: Provide methane conversion, recycle treatment and the efficiency definition. A percentage without its numerator, denominator and system boundary is not comparable.
  6. SMR capture details: Identify every CO2 stream captured, the capture rate, energy penalty, compression boundary and storage assumptions.
  7. Pyrolysis carbon details: Describe carbon quality, allocation method, end use, disposal route and any avoided-product credit. Name the displaced product and justify functional equivalence.
  8. Economic separation: Keep emissions results separate from costs. Natural-gas and electricity prices, carbon-management costs and access to carbon markets can change project economics without changing the underlying chemistry.

The 2026 comparative assessment specifically identifies conversion, electricity-demand boundaries, upstream leakage and coproduct accounting as variables future pyrolysis LCAs should disclose.

Where each route may fit

Pyrolysis is most promising when

  • Low-carbon electricity or heat is available at the required scale.
  • Methane supply has demonstrably low leakage and reliable monitoring.
  • The reactor achieves high conversion without excessive recycle or methane slip.
  • A qualified buyer can use the solid carbon, with realistic volumes and specifications.
  • The project can document carbon allocation and avoid relying on an unsupported climate credit.

SMR remains attractive when

  • Existing infrastructure, operators and gas supply make rapid deployment important.
  • Steam, reformer heat and hydrogen purification can be integrated efficiently.
  • CO2 transport and permanent storage are available for the captured streams.
  • The operator can measure and reduce upstream methane leakage rather than relying only on point-source capture.

Neither list is a certification. Site conditions, regulation, storage access and product requirements determine whether a project meets its stated emissions target.

Common mistakes in interpreting comparisons

  • Calling pyrolysis “zero emissions”: The reaction may avoid process CO2, but energy, gas leakage and unconverted methane still count.
  • Comparing unlike boundaries: A plant-gate pyrolysis result cannot be fairly ranked against delivered SMR hydrogen that includes transport and storage.
  • Ignoring electricity carbon intensity: Electricity can dominate a plasma-arc result; the same reactor has a different footprint on a different grid.
  • Assuming all solid carbon is carbon black: Product name and market value depend on material properties and customer specifications.
  • Applying a carbon credit automatically: A credit requires a defensible displaced-product claim and a market capable of absorbing the material.
  • Using capture rate as total plant reduction: Capture may exclude furnace, purification, compression or upstream emissions.
  • Mixing historical and current figures: The IEA’s 16-million-tonne carbon-black demand figure is for 2020; it is not a current demand forecast.
  • Treating color labels as measurements: “Blue,” “turquoise,” “clean” and “low-carbon” do not uniquely specify emissions intensity.

What the evidence supports today

SMR is the mature incumbent and has a well-understood process chain, but unabated natural-gas hydrogen carries substantial lifecycle emissions. CCS can reduce selected point-source emissions, not upstream methane leakage by itself.

Methane pyrolysis offers a different carbon pathway and may achieve lower lifecycle emissions in favorable configurations. Its result is highly sensitive to electricity and heat sources, methane conversion and the treatment of solid carbon. Its commercial case also depends on whether customers can absorb the coproduct at the required quality and volume.

The IEA cautions in Towards hydrogen definitions based on their emissions intensity (2023): “Using colours to refer to different production routes, or terms such as ‘sustainable’, ‘low-carbon’ or ‘clean’ hydrogen, obscures many different levels of potential emissions.” Reporting hydrogen emissions intensity with transparent assumptions is more informative than assigning a color.

Questions decision-makers should ask before approving a project

  • What is the measured or modelled methane leakage rate for the actual gas supply?
  • Which electricity and heat sources operate the reactor or reformer, and how do their emissions change over the project life?
  • What methane conversion and hydrogen recovery are achieved at steady state?
  • For SMR, which CO2 streams are captured, compressed and permanently stored?
  • For pyrolysis, what exact solid-carbon specification is produced, who will buy it, and what happens if the market is unavailable?
  • Are hydrogen pressure, purity, compression and delivery treated identically in both cases?
  • Can an independent reviewer reproduce the allocation, leakage and coproduct-credit calculations?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is methane pyrolysis always lower-carbon than SMR?

No. Its outcome depends on electricity and heat emissions, methane leakage, conversion, reactor design and the treatment of solid carbon. An SMR plant with well-designed CCS and low-leakage gas can compare differently from an electricity-intensive or low-conversion pyrolysis plant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does pyrolysis produce carbon dioxide?

The ideal methane-decomposition reaction produces hydrogen and solid carbon rather than process CO2. Lifecycle CO2 and other greenhouse-gas emissions can still arise from energy supply, natural-gas production and transport, incomplete conversion and carbon handling.

Can the solid carbon from pyrolysis always be sold as carbon black?

No. Carbon-black designation depends on material properties and end-use specifications. Quality, customer qualification, logistics and market capacity determine whether the coproduct is saleable, lower-value or a disposal obligation.

Why do lifecycle studies report very different pyrolysis emissions?

Studies may use different electricity mixes, methane-leakage assumptions, reactor efficiencies, methane-conversion rates, pressure requirements, lifecycle boundaries and carbon-allocation or avoided-product-credit rules. Results are comparable only after those assumptions are aligned.

What does an SMR capture percentage leave out?

It may exclude some furnace or flue-gas emissions, hydrogen purification, compression, transport, storage losses and upstream methane emissions. A complete result identifies every captured stream and the boundary used.
