What the Instagram-photo feature did
Meta introduced Muse Image in July 2026 as an image-generation feature in Meta AI, and described creative features across Meta apps, including Instagram and WhatsApp. During the initial rollout, people could @-mention public Instagram accounts as references for generated images. Contemporary coverage reported that adult users with public profiles could be included by default as possible references.

Meta removed the public-account reference feature
On July 10, Meta updated its announcement to say that people could no longer generate images by @-mentioning public Instagram accounts. The Associated Press reported Meta’s explanation: “We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available.” The change addressed that account-reference feature; it was not an announcement that Muse Image or other Meta AI image tools had been discontinued. How to check the reported opt-out controls
During the July rollout, contemporaneous reports described an Instagram setting in “Sharing and reuse” for stopping the reuse of posts and reels with Meta AI features. These are historical instructions, not a verified path for the current Instagram app. Meta’s later statement confirms the @-mention feature’s removal but does not confirm whether those controls remain, what they are currently called, or who can access them.
- Open Instagram and check the current settings for a “Sharing and reuse” section or equivalent privacy controls.
- Look for separate controls for posts and reels that mention reuse with Meta AI features; reports described controls for both.
- If those controls appear and you do not want the described reuse, review and change them in the app. If they do not appear, do not assume the old menu path still applies; the current control availability is not established.
The reported menu location and separate post and reel controls were described during the initial rollout by TechCrunch and Tom’s Guide. Neither report verifies today’s interface.

What remains uncertain
The cited sources do not verify current Instagram setting labels, whether the reported toggles remain available, or eligibility by account type or region. Check what your own app displays rather than relying on a July 2026 menu path. The launch and its reversal are also described in MacRumors’ initial rollout coverage and Meta’s updated announcement.
