Meta’s Muse AI Targets Small Businesses—but Will Owners Actually Need It?

Meta’s Muse for Small Business is an expansion of its personal AI agent, not a separate business app. It is designed to connect to a small business’s existing accounts and help with marketing, customer replies, finances and operations. That may be useful for owners buried in repetitive work—but Meta’s launch materials and early customer anecdotes do not yet show that Muse reliably saves time or improves business results.

What Muse for Small Business is—and what it is not

Meta announced Muse for Small Business on September 29, 2026. Rather than introducing a standalone business application, Meta says it is adding business-focused skills and connectors to Muse, its personal AI agent. The idea is to give the agent a goal and let it work across selected business accounts and connected services. Meta’s announcement and Axios’s launch report describe the product.

Meta presents Muse as a general-purpose assistant for business administration, not an autonomous replacement for an owner or employee. Its business page describes work on goals and projects in the background, alongside specific business tasks. Those are advertised capabilities, not independently verified performance results.

What Meta says the agent can help with

Meta’s proposed uses span work that many small businesses handle with a mix of spreadsheets, social platforms and separate software:

  • Customer service: draft replies to customer questions.
  • Finances: review financial performance and flag unusual expenses.
  • Operations: help with cash-flow and inventory management.

The distinction that matters is between preparing or suggesting work and getting a reliable result. Meta describes these use cases, but the public launch materials do not establish how accurately Muse handles a particular company’s data, whether its recommendations improve outcomes or how much checking its work requires.

Which services can it connect to?

Meta names Facebook Pages, Instagram professional account analytics and Meta ad accounts, as well as these third-party services: Asana, Box, Canva, Dropbox, Figma, Granola, HighLevel, Intuit QuickBooks, Klaviyo, Lovable, Notion, Shopify, Slack, Stripe and Zoom. Meta says the current full connector list appears in Muse app settings and that more connectors are planned. A named service should not be assumed to be available to every user, or to provide every permission a business might want; check the app’s current list and permission scope before relying on a specific integration. See Meta’s business page and its announcement.

What controls does Meta say owners have?

Meta says Muse will not publish, send or spend without user approval. Its business page also describes an audit trail and user control over connected apps. In a separate introduction to the personal agent, Meta describes a dedicated cloud virtual machine, a separate Sentinel process that approves internet access, and app-permission controls.

These are vendor descriptions of safeguards, not an independent audit of how the system behaves in practice. For an owner, the practical question is not only whether a final action requires approval, but also what data an integration can access, what the audit trail records and how easy it is to revoke access. Review those settings before connecting business accounts, especially accounts containing financial or customer information.

Who can use it, and what does it cost?

Meta’s business page says Muse for Small Business is available to people aged 18 or older in the United States and Canada. Meta says Muse is free for most needs. At launch, Axios reported monthly tiers at $20 and $100; TechRadar identified them as Power and Max, with 500 million and 3 billion weekly tokens, respectively. Those plan names, prices and token allocations are launch-report details, not a guarantee of current terms. Check the current offering and limits before deciding what it would cost at your actual usage.

Does the early evidence show that businesses need it?

Not yet. Axios reported Meta vice president of AI products Vishal Shah saying that about a third of early Muse users were already connecting some kind of business account. That is an executive-reported snapshot of early users—not an independently audited adoption figure, and not evidence that those users saved time or earned more.

Meta has also shared feedback from businesses testing the new features. One example is Tom Mulholland, owner of Mulholland Grocery in Malvern, Iowa. Axios reported that Muse helped his store reconnect to Google Maps after he missed an email. Meta published Mulholland’s account of wanting to spend less time on the many jobs only he could do and more time on work that makes money for his grocery store. That is a useful illustration of the problem the product is meant to address, but it remains a company-published customer anecdote rather than a controlled case study. Shah’s Axios-reported statement that “People are using Muse to run their business” is likewise an attributed executive claim, not an independent finding.

The Associated Press framed the broader question as whether people will actually use the agent. For a small-business owner, the more useful test is whether it handles a task the business genuinely has, can access the right systems, and saves more effort than it takes to inspect and correct its work. The sources available at launch do not establish those outcomes or provide an independent assessment of Muse’s operational accuracy or business return on investment.

How to judge whether Muse fits your business

Start with a real recurring task, not the promise of an all-purpose assistant. A business that regularly needs help drafting social content or assembling information from connected accounts has a different potential use from one whose main need is specialized judgment or hands-on work.

  1. Name the task and its cost. Identify a repetitive job—such as preparing a draft reply or reviewing campaign activity—and estimate how much owner or staff time it currently consumes.
  2. Confirm the connection and access. Check whether the needed service is currently listed in Muse settings and what data and permissions the connection requests.
  3. Keep review in the workflow. Treat generated analysis, financial flags and customer-facing drafts as work to inspect. Meta says actions that publish, send or spend require approval, but that does not establish the accuracy of the material being approved.
  4. Compare effort saved with oversight. Track the time spent checking, correcting and managing Muse alongside the time it takes to do the task directly.
  5. Recheck the terms. Confirm eligibility, plan limits and current pricing before making the tool part of a recurring business process.

This is also a fair way to compare Muse with another tool: look at task coverage, available connectors and permissions, approval and audit controls, the human review burden, geographic availability and total cost at your actual usage. The launch sources do not establish a tested head-to-head winner.
