Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater is a remake of the 2004 PlayStation 2 game, not a new story. Konami describes it as the same story and world with all-new graphics and 3D audio. The characters, voice acting, gameplay and music return, while the remake adds modern presentation and two camera-and-control options.

Choose Delta if you want contemporary image quality, 3D sound, a third-person camera option and a current-generation release. Choose the original through Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 if you want the visual character, interface feel and pacing associated with the 2004 version. Both lead to the same core Snake Eater experience.

At a glance: the remake changes presentation, not the premise

Aspect Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater Original Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater What the difference means
Release context Remake launched August 28, 2025 Original released in 2004 for PlayStation 2 Delta is a modern rebuild of the same adventure rather than a sequel or alternate storyline.
Story and world Same story and setting Original story and setting There is no separate plot to learn in one version; the narrative destination is the same.
Characters and performances Characters, voice acting, gameplay and music return Original cast presentation, gameplay and music Delta’s main changes are audiovisual and control-related, not a rewritten cast or script.
Camera and controls New Style: over-the-shoulder, third-person controls. Legacy Style: an original-like top-down viewpoint and control mapping. Original-style viewpoint and control mapping Delta lets you approach the same encounters with either a modern or deliberately classic control feel.
Graphics and sound All-new graphics and 3D audio 2004-era visual and audio presentation Delta prioritizes contemporary clarity; the original preserves its PlayStation 2-era character.
Platforms PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam Available on current platforms through Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1, according to Konami Your hardware may decide which version is easiest to access.

The practical distinction is therefore not “old game versus a different game.” It is “historical presentation versus modern presentation,” with Delta also giving you a choice of control styles.

What Delta keeps from the 2004 Snake Eater

The same narrative framework

Delta retains the original story and world. The mission, setting and character relationships are not replaced with a new continuity. If you know Snake Eater from its PlayStation 2 release, you should recognize the dramatic structure and the fictional world in which it takes place.

  • SETTING: BATTLE OF REPADS JOUNGLES: Measure yourself with the environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats law in the shadow, and noises alert predators

Producer Noriaki Okamura explained the remake’s guiding principle in a 2025 PlayStation Blog developer interview: “I had no intention of altering the original story, so I insisted that we can just update the game graphics.” That statement is useful when evaluating internet claims that Delta is a radically rewritten version. The announced objective was preservation of the narrative with a new presentation.

Returning performances, gameplay and music

Konami’s description identifies voice acting, gameplay and music among the elements that return. That means Delta is not being positioned as a new interpretation with a replacement soundtrack or an unrelated mechanical foundation. The remake’s identity still comes from Snake Eater’s established combination of stealth play, characters, dialogue and score.

“Return” does not mean the two releases look or sound identical. The original’s performances and music are encountered through its 2004-era audiovisual presentation, while Delta places those same core elements in a newly built technical environment. For players deciding whether the remake invalidates the original, the important point is that the underlying creative material remains recognizable.

What Delta changes

All-new graphics

The most visible change is the graphics. Delta replaces the PlayStation 2-era presentation with newly produced visuals intended for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. This affects how you perceive the environments, characters and action, even though the story occupying those spaces is unchanged.

The original has a specific historical look: its visual limitations, image treatment and interface belong to 2004 hardware. Those qualities can be part of the appeal for players interested in how the game was originally authored and experienced. Delta instead removes that hardware-era appearance in favor of a contemporary rendering approach.

Do not read “all-new graphics” as evidence of a new plot or redesigned campaign. In the context of the remake’s stated goal, the visual overhaul is the mechanism for presenting the existing adventure to modern hardware.

3D audio instead of the original audio presentation

Delta also adds 3D audio. This is a presentation upgrade, not a claim that the music or voice work has been discarded; Konami lists music and voice acting among the returning elements. The difference is the way sound is delivered in the remake compared with the original’s PlayStation 2-era audio design.

  • EPIC CAMPAIGN MODE: Dive into a 14-mission campaign filled with stealth, strategy, and iconic boss battles, bringing the Metal Gear Solid experience to your tabletop.
  • FLEXIBLE VR MISSIONS: Choose from 6 free-to-play VR Missions for a quick, intense gaming experience. All gear earned is unlocked for future missions.
  • UNIQUE BOSS FIGHTS: Each boss requires different strategies to defeat, offering a diverse and challenging gameplay experience.
  • ASYMMETRIC CHARACTER ABILITIES: Play as Solid Snake, Meryl, Otacon, or Gray Fox, each with unique abilities that provide new tactical options in every game.
  • SAVE THE WORLD: Assume the role of legendary characters to infiltrate enemy bases and sabotage prototype weapon systems, preventing world-ending threats.

Players who value the original’s period character may prefer the older presentation precisely because it sounds like the game they remember. Players using a modern console or PC and looking for a more current audiovisual experience will generally find Delta’s 3D-audio approach the more attractive option.

Two camera and control styles

Delta offers two named styles:

  • New Style uses an over-the-shoulder, third-person camera and control scheme. This is the option to try first if you expect contemporary third-person movement and aiming conventions.
  • Legacy Style uses an original-like top-down viewpoint and control mapping. It is intended for players who want Delta to feel closer to the classic version while still using the remake’s new presentation.

The original supplies the historical control experience rather than a menu of modern and classic choices. Delta’s advantage is flexibility: you can select the camera language that best matches your habits, then change your mind without buying a second release.

The two styles are not separate stories or campaigns. They are alternative ways to interact with the same remake. If you are comparing videos or reviews, check which style the player selected before treating the movement and camera behavior as representative of all of Delta.

Platform availability and what to buy

Where Delta is sold

Konami released Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater on August 28, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. It is therefore aimed at current-generation console owners and PC players using the Steam version. A PlayStation 4, Xbox One or other older-console release is not identified in the supplied release information, so do not assume an older-platform edition exists.

Where to find the original

Konami says the original Metal Gear Solid 3 is included in Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 and runs on current platforms. This collection is the straightforward route when your priority is the 2004 game rather than the remake’s new graphics, 3D audio and optional camera style.

Availability, language options, physical formats and regional listings can differ by storefront. Check the edition offered for your territory and platform before purchasing. The relevant decision is which release is included: Delta is the remake, while Master Collection Vol. 1 supplies the original game.

How the differences affect the way each version feels

Modern clarity versus historical character

Delta’s visual and audio overhaul can make the game feel more immediate to someone accustomed to current releases. The image is no longer shaped by PlayStation 2-era technology, and 3D audio gives the remake a contemporary sound presentation. That can make Delta the easier recommendation for a first-time player who wants the game to fit naturally beside newer titles.

  • GAMEPLAY: SURVIVAL BATTLE OF INSTINCTS: Outsmart enemies with camouflage, close-quarters combat, stalking, interrogating, climbing, hunting and treating injuries
  • SETTING: THE JUNGLE BATTLE OF REPTILES: Pit yourself against an environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats lurk in the shadows and noises alert predators

The original offers a different kind of value. Its graphics, audio, interface and pacing are products of the 2004 release context. Some players want that context because it preserves the way the game was designed to be encountered at the time, including the limitations that modern remakes normally remove. That is not a technical advantage; it is a historical and aesthetic preference.

Control familiarity matters more than screenshots suggest

A screenshot can show the difference in rendering, but it cannot show how much the camera affects your comfort. New Style’s over-the-shoulder perspective is the natural starting point for players who expect a modern third-person view. Legacy Style is there for players who associate Snake Eater with its original-like top-down viewpoint and mapping.

If you tried the original years ago and disliked the viewpoint, Delta’s New Style may address that specific barrier without changing the campaign. If you loved the original’s deliberate perspective, Legacy Style lets you retain more of that interaction model while benefiting from the remake’s audiovisual work.

Pacing and interface tolerance

The original’s pacing and interface are part of its period identity. Delta is the better fit when you have low tolerance for older presentation conventions and want a version designed around current hardware. The original is the better fit when preserving the historical rhythm is more important than reducing friction.

Neither preference is a statement about the quality of the story. It is a choice about how much 2004-era design language you want between you and that story.

Which version should you play first?

Choose Delta first when you want the most accessible starting point

  • You are new to Snake Eater and want modern graphics and 3D audio.
  • You normally play third-person games and would rather begin with an over-the-shoulder camera.
  • You own a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or a PC with Steam and want a release built for that hardware generation.
  • You want the option to switch between New Style and Legacy Style instead of committing to the original control language.

This route gives you the established story without requiring you to accept the original’s visual presentation before you know whether the adventure suits you.

Choose the original first when preservation is your priority

  • You want to experience the 2004 PlayStation 2 release as a historical game rather than as a modern remake.
  • You value the original-era look, sound, interface and pacing.
  • You already have access to Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 on a current platform.
  • You want to understand exactly how Snake Eater was presented before comparing the remake’s changes.

This choice makes sense even if you eventually plan to play Delta. The original is not made redundant simply because a remake exists; it remains the reference point for the game’s original presentation.

  • SETTING: THE JUNGLE BATTLE OF REPTILES: Pit yourself against an environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats lurk in the shadows and noises alert predators

Play both if the comparison itself is the appeal

Because the narrative framework is shared, playing both lets you isolate presentation and control differences instead of learning two unrelated campaigns. Start with whichever version matches your tolerance for older design. Then use the other to compare the camera, audiovisual treatment and overall feel of familiar scenes.

There is no required order. Playing Delta first will not prevent you from appreciating the original’s historical qualities, and playing the original first will not make Delta’s new presentation impossible to enjoy.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Identify your platform. If you have PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or Steam, Delta is the remake option. If you are shopping for the original on a current system, look for Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1.
  2. Decide whether the 2004 presentation is part of the goal. If yes, select the original. If no, Delta’s all-new graphics and 3D audio remove the main reason to seek out the older release.
  3. Pick a camera preference. New Style is over-the-shoulder and third-person; Legacy Style uses an original-like top-down view and mapping. The original represents the latter approach rather than offering both.
  4. Separate story concerns from presentation concerns. You are not choosing between two plots. You are choosing how the same Snake Eater story, world and returning creative elements are presented.
  5. Check the exact edition in your region. Storefront names, formats and availability can vary, so verify that a listing is Delta or the original included in Master Collection Vol. 1.

Which version has better graphics?

Delta has the all-new graphics; the original retains its 2004 PlayStation 2-era presentation. “Better” depends on whether you value modern image quality or historical authenticity.

The bottom line

Delta is the choice for a modern presentation and flexible camera options; the original is the choice for the authentic 2004-era look, sound, interface and pacing.
