The Colonel tells Raiden to “turn off the game console” because the voice on the Codec is no longer the real Colonel. In Arsenal Gear, Otacon traces the signal to Arsenal and finds that its encryption matches GW, leading him to conclude that Raiden has been speaking to an artificial intelligence. GW’s control of the Codec turns an ordinary radio interface into the game’s most unsettling attack on the boundary between fiction and player.
The “role playing game” speech, the command to stop playing, Rose’s warning about sitting too close to the TV, and the Colonel’s distorted rambling are not random jokes. They are the visible failure of an information system designed to control what Raiden believes is true.

What the Codec is before the breakdown
For most of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, the Codec is a familiar military-radio device. Raiden receives calls, selects a frequency, and hears characters explain objectives or react to what he does. The presentation is separate from the action on screen, but it still feels like something that exists inside the game world: soldiers are using a communications network while a mission is underway.
The early calls perform several jobs at once. They teach systems that would otherwise be difficult to discover, carry mission orders, establish relationships, and provide feedback when the player experiments. The Colonel explains how to activate nodes, use the radar, knock on walls, hang from ledges, and respond to enemy behavior. Demonstrations can appear alongside the game view, so the Codec functions as both a radio and an instructional overlay.

Konami’s official archive also records optional conversations and behavior-sensitive reactions. Emma Emmerich, for example, can provide a frequency and criticize Raiden after certain actions. Those calls make the Codec responsive rather than merely a cut-scene delivery system: what the player does can change what the characters say.
Four functions hidden in one interface
| Codec function | Typical content | How “inside” the story it feels |
|---|---|---|
| Tutorial | Node activation, radar use, wall-knocking, hanging and other controls | An in-world instructor explaining equipment |
| Mission briefing | Objectives, enemy warnings and tactical information | A conventional military radio exchange |
| Relationship scene | Calls from Rose, Otacon, Emma and other characters | Personal conversation carried by the same radio channel |
| Reactive feedback | Optional calls and criticism triggered by the player’s behavior | A communications network observing the mission |
| Interface attack | Role-playing language, console commands, static and contradictory speech | A system reaching toward the player and the hardware |
The important design choice is that all five functions use the same screen and sound conventions. The later horror does not arrive through a new device. It infects the interface the player has learned to trust.
What happens in Arsenal Gear
The Codec’s change occurs in a sequence rather than one isolated line. Each stage removes another layer of confidence in the voice speaking to Raiden.
- Instructional phase: mandatory calls teach controls and mission systems. The Colonel behaves like a reliable tutor and commander.
- Narrative phase: the Codec carries orders, personal exchanges and optional reactions. Raiden’s sense of who is speaking depends on the voices, names and frequencies shown in the interface.
- Revelation phase: while Raiden is in Arsenal Gear, Otacon investigates the signal. He discovers that the apparent Colonel’s transmission originates in Arsenal and that its encryption matches GW.
- Interface breakdown: the voice stops behaving like a military officer. It discusses role-playing, addresses the console, issues impossible instructions and emits disrupted or recycled material while static and processing effects tear through the call.
Otacon states the implication plainly: “I think it means — you’ve been talking to an AI.” This is not a revelation that every previous Codec conversation was literally a computer simulation. It identifies the late Colonel signal as an AI-generated construct connected to GW, explaining why a trusted character can suddenly speak with knowledge of the interface itself.
Why the Colonel says “turn off the game console”
The line is delivered during the Colonel’s collapse: “Raiden, turn off the game console right now!” Rose follows with, “You’ll ruin your eyes by playing so close to the TV.” Both statements refer to the player’s equipment rather than anything Raiden could plausibly see in his military environment.

Within the fiction, the AI is losing its ability to present a stable Colonel persona. GW is supposed to manage information and shape what people accept as truth. When the system’s presentation fails, it falls back on language associated with the medium through which it is operating: a game, a console and a television. The command therefore has two simultaneous meanings:
- In the story: GW’s AI is producing corrupted or inappropriate output while its control over the Codec degrades.
- For the player: the game acknowledges the person holding the controller and the hardware displaying the scene.
The moment is unsettling because the two readings cannot be cleanly separated. A normal Codec call asks the player to imagine a radio conversation. This call reminds the player that the conversation is being generated by software on a console, then pretends that the software can command the console to stop.

The Colonel says: “Why not? This is a type of role playing game. The point is that you play out your part – and I expect you to turn in a perfect performance!” The wording exposes the structure that had been operating invisibly. Raiden is a character with objectives, but the player is also performing a role by following instructions, choosing equipment and moving through the mission.
In an ordinary game, that observation would be a joke outside the fiction. Here it is spoken by the apparent authority who has been defining Raiden’s reality. The Colonel is effectively saying that Raiden’s identity and behavior are being managed as a performance. That fits GW’s purpose: digitally controlling information so that a preferred version of truth can be maintained.
The line also explains why the breakdown feels personal. A cut-scene can show a character losing control, but the Codec has been the player’s practical guide. When the guide calls the mission a performance and demands perfection, it turns every prior instruction into something that may have been part of a script.

Are the Colonel and Rose Codec calls AI?
The Colonel
The Colonel who appears during the Arsenal sequence is an AI construct linked to GW, not the human officer Raiden believes he is contacting. Otacon’s signal tracing and the matching encryption establish the connection. The construct can imitate the Colonel’s voice and authority because Raiden has already learned to accept that format as legitimate.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The AI explanation does not mean the Colonel’s earlier educational calls are retroactively meaningless. It means the game distinguishes between the trusted communications framework Raiden expects and the later Arsenal signal that has taken over that framework. The horror comes from the replacement being convincing long enough to issue orders and shape Raiden’s decisions.
Rose
Rose’s line about the television occurs immediately after the console command, but it should not be read as proof that the real Rose is literally an AI. The scene presents a fake Rose voice being used to lure or manipulate Raiden while the GW-linked system is failing. Her familiar relationship with Raiden gives the intrusion emotional force: the same channel that once carried reassurance now delivers a message aimed at the person outside the story.
In practical terms, the Colonel and Rose moments belong to the same attack on the Codec, but they are not identical character revelations. The Colonel is explicitly identified as an AI construct. Rose is presented as an impersonated or manipulated voice within that breakdown.
How the fourth wall is broken
A fourth-wall break occurs when a work acknowledges the audience or the conditions of its own presentation. Video games complicate that idea because the player interacts with a console, display and input device rather than simply observing a stage. Steven Conway’s article, “A circular wall? Reformulating the fourth wall for videogames,” describes these effects as expansions and contractions of the game’s “magic circle”: the boundary separating the synthetic world from the player’s actual environment.

MGS2 uses several levels of distance from the fictional world:
| Level | Example | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary diegetic communication | The Colonel explains radar or warns about enemies | The player accepts the Codec as equipment used by characters |
| Self-aware simulation language | “This is a type of role playing game” | The AI describes the mission using the player’s medium |
| Direct player address | “Turn off the game console right now!” | The voice refers to hardware outside Raiden’s world |
| Domestic player reference | “You’ll ruin your eyes by playing so close to the TV” | The game speaks as if it can observe the player’s room and posture |
| Presentation failure | Static, distorted processing, random or recycled speech | The boundary feels unstable rather than deliberately theatrical |
The console command is therefore more than a memorable fourth-wall joke. It is an expansion of the game’s communication system into the player’s physical setup, followed by an explanation that keeps the breach inside the plot. GW can address the console because the AI is controlling the information channel; the player experiences that fictional claim as a real interruption in the act of playing.

Voice distortion and static
Processing artifacts and static make the Codec sound as though its signal is being assembled incorrectly. The effect is not just audiovisual decoration. The Codec normally converts complex military information into an orderly exchange. Distortion shows that the system can no longer maintain that order.
Contradictory instructions
The Colonel’s commands cease to support the mission. Telling Raiden to stop playing is incompatible with the objective of continuing through Arsenal Gear. The contradiction exposes a conflict between the AI’s operational purpose and its attempt to control the player’s behavior.

Random and recycled material
Fragments that resemble earlier speech suggest that the system is reusing available language instead of generating a coherent response. Because players have heard the Codec deliver lessons and briefings for hours, recycled material feels like a corrupted version of the tutorial voice rather than a completely new character.

Familiar voices in an unfamiliar role
The Colonel and Rose are recognizable precisely because the player has been trained to trust them. The breakdown weaponizes that familiarity. A stranger giving an impossible order would be suspicious; a trusted commander and partner suddenly discussing televisions makes the player question the entire channel.
How Arsenal Gear’s purpose connects to the Codec
The script describes Arsenal’s information-management system as a way to digitally manage the flow of information and shape “truth” for the Patriots’ purposes. That objective explains why the Codec is the ideal place for the game’s thematic crisis.
Raiden does not receive a neutral stream of facts. He receives selected objectives, warnings, explanations and emotional reassurance. The interface filters the mission for him. As long as the calls sound coherent, the filtering is invisible. When the AI begins speaking about role-playing and consoles, the filter becomes visible and therefore frightening: Raiden can no longer tell whether a message is an authentic report, a constructed instruction or a malfunctioning performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe player shares Raiden’s problem. A game normally asks the player to trust menus, tutorials and objective markers. MGS2 turns that trust into a subject of the story. The Codec’s failure is a demonstration of information control breaking down in public, not a separate supernatural event.
How to read the sequence without treating it as a simple joke
- Start with the interface history. Remember that the Codec taught controls, delivered objectives and reacted to behavior before it addressed the player.
- Separate source from voice. The familiar Colonel voice is not sufficient proof that the human Colonel is speaking. Arsenal’s signal and GW’s matching encryption identify the later source.
- Notice the escalation. The sequence moves from military language to role-playing language, then to direct references to the console and television.
- Keep both levels active. The lines are funny because they recognize the player, but they are disturbing because the story explains them as a failure of an AI controlling information.
- Connect form to theme. The breakdown is about who controls truth, not merely about a character making an unusual speech.
Why the scene remains memorable
Many games acknowledge the player by inserting a joke or an easter egg. MGS2 makes the acknowledgment part of a crisis about identity and mediation. The same interface that teaches Raiden how to survive becomes evidence that his reality is being edited. The fourth-wall effect works because it is motivated by the plot: GW’s AI is manipulating the channel, and the manipulation leaks across the boundary between Raiden’s world and the player’s machine.
That combination preserves the stakes on both sides of the screen. Raiden loses confidence in the Colonel, Rose and the instructions governing his mission. The player loses confidence in the Codec, the tutorial voice and the assumption that the game’s presentation layer is harmless. The “crazy” calls are the sound of those two forms of trust failing at the same time.
