For most players, play Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty in Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1. It is the practical choice on current consoles and PC, with selectable rendering modes, platform-dependent upscaling, controller remapping, and—on Steam—keyboard-and-mouse support. Choose the original PlayStation 2 release when original hardware behavior, period presentation, disc ownership, or collecting matters more than convenience.
The Master Collection version is an HD-era conversion with modern display and input options, not a ground-up remake. The original-era expanded edition, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, is a separate consideration for collectors and completionists because it extends the PlayStation 2 classic rather than simply reproducing the standard Sons of Liberty release.

What each release actually is
Master Collection: an updated conversion, not a remake
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty in Master Collection Vol. 1 is an HD-era conversion of the original game. It preserves the underlying game rather than rebuilding it as a modern remake. The important change is the presentation and input layer: Konami exposes internal-resolution choices, several upscaling targets, movie-resolution options, and remapping features that were not part of the original PS2 experience.

That distinction matters. A higher-resolution output does not turn the game into a new graphics engine, and the collection should not be judged as though it were a remake. Its value is access, compatibility, and configurable presentation while retaining the original game’s structure and identity.
The original PlayStation 2 releases
The standard original is Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty on PlayStation 2. Playing it on period hardware preserves the way the game was designed to appear and respond in that hardware context. The image is tied to the console’s original video output rather than to a menu of modern internal-resolution and upscaling choices.
The expanded original-era edition is Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance. Piggyback’s guide describes it as “an extended version of the PlayStation®2 classic, ‘Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty’.” If you want to compare the original release with its expanded edition, or you collect the PS2-era versions, Substance is the release to seek. It should not be treated as simply another name for the standard Sons of Liberty disc.
Display options: original presentation versus sharper output
Original Mode
Konami’s PS5 documentation describes an Original Mode. It renders at the game’s original resolution, applies default upscaling, and uses the original movies. This is the closest built-in Master Collection option to the period presentation, although it is still running through the collection’s modern software environment rather than on a PlayStation 2.
Choose Original Mode if you want the least altered presentation available in the collection, are comparing screenshots with the PS2 version, or dislike aggressive sharpening and high-resolution video replacements.

Adjusted Mode
Adjusted Mode uses FHD internal resolution and upscales to the highest target supported by the display and platform. It is the straightforward choice when you want a cleaner, more contemporary image without manually deciding every setting.
Custom settings
Konami’s notes also document custom choices for:
- Original or FHD internal rendering.
- FHD, WQHD, or 4K upscaling, where the platform supports the target.
- Original or high-resolution movies.
- Alternative upscaling methods.
The available ceiling is platform-dependent. Selecting 4K in a menu cannot make a platform whose documented maximum is FHD or WQHD produce a 4K upscale.

These are maximum upscaling targets in Konami’s Ver.2.0.0 console notes, released November 15, 2024. They are not independent image-quality benchmarks, and they do not establish a universal frame-rate or latency difference between platforms.
What about the original PS2 image?
The PS2 release is constrained by its period output. That is precisely its advantage for an authenticity-minded player: the display behavior, image softness, and hardware context belong to the original release rather than being selected from a modern options menu. It is also the least convenient route because you need the original disc and functioning legacy hardware, or a lawful compatible setup that supports your copy.
Controls and input options
Steam: the broadest documented customization
The Steam update adds the most extensive documented input options in the comparison. You can use controller remapping, keyboard-and-mouse layouts, custom bindings, mouse operation, and mouse-sensitivity controls. This makes the PC version the most flexible choice if you need a particular keyboard arrangement, use a nonstandard controller, or want to tune mouse behavior.

For a first setup, launch the game, open its control or input settings, choose either a controller or keyboard-and-mouse layout, assign the actions you use most, and adjust mouse sensitivity before starting a long session. Save or apply the custom layout, then test movement, aiming, camera control, and menu navigation in a safe early section. The exact menu wording can vary with the installed Steam build, but the documented feature set includes all of those controls.

Console versions support controller remapping in the collection’s documented updates. Remapping is useful if the default arrangement feels unfamiliar or if you are moving between generations with different controller layouts. It does not turn the console version into a keyboard-and-mouse build; the documented console feature is controller customization.
Original PlayStation 2
The original release gives you the controller behavior and limitations of the PS2-era game. That is a benefit when your goal is authenticity and a drawback when you need modern accessibility or a customized control scheme. There is no Master Collection-style menu of internal resolution, upscaling, movie quality, and remapping options on the original disc.
Platform-by-platform recommendations
PlayStation 5
Choose the Master Collection on PS5 unless original hardware is your primary reason for playing. PS5 has a documented 4K maximum upscaling target, selectable Original and Adjusted modes, custom original/FHD rendering, movie choices, and controller remapping. Use Original Mode for the least altered collection presentation; use Adjusted Mode or a custom FHD/4K configuration for a cleaner display.
Konami’s PS5 maintenance page records Ver.2.1.0 as released February 13, 2026, following Ver.2.0.0. Keep the game updated so the documented fixes and options are available.

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro
The collection remains the convenience choice on both systems, but the documented ceilings differ: FHD on standard PS4 and 4K on PS4 Pro. If you own a standard PS4, do not select the platform expecting the same maximum target listed for PS4 Pro or PS5. If you own a PS4 Pro, its 4K ceiling makes it the stronger of the two for a high-resolution display.
Xbox Series X and Series S
Xbox Series X has a documented 4K maximum upscaling target, while Series S is listed at WQHD. Both are modern, convenient routes with the collection’s display and controller options. The Series X is the better fit if the highest documented Xbox output target matters; Series S remains a sensible choice when compact hardware or existing ownership matters more.
PC through Steam
Pick Steam when input flexibility is your deciding factor. In addition to the collection’s rendering and movie choices, Steam documents keyboard-and-mouse layouts, custom bindings, mouse operation, sensitivity controls, and controller remapping. PC is therefore the clearest recommendation for players who want to rebuild the controls around their own keyboard, mouse, or gamepad.
Do not infer a universal performance advantage from the PC version. The available material documents control and display features, not a controlled cross-platform benchmark for frame rate, latency, or image quality.

Nintendo Switch and other current-console listings
Availability and edition names can vary by region and platform. The cited console notes specify maximum upscaling for PS5, PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S; they do not state a comparable maximum in the supplied technical information for Switch. If Switch is your only modern system, verify the current regional listing and its option menu rather than assuming it has the same ceiling as PS5 or Series X.

Original PlayStation 2 hardware
Use the original when the point of the session is the period experience: original disc, original console behavior, original output, and the physical context of the release. It is also the route to choose when you are building a PS2 collection. The trade-off is practical: legacy hardware, disc condition, display compatibility, and used-market availability become your responsibility.

- Start with your hardware. If you already own a supported current console or gaming PC, the Master Collection removes the need to source a PS2, disc, and compatible display setup.
- Decide whether authenticity is the goal. If “original” means the actual PS2 output and hardware behavior, choose the PS2 release. If it means simply avoiding a heavily altered presentation, select Original Mode in the collection.
- Choose your input priority. Select Steam for the broadest documented remapping and mouse support; choose a console collection version for controller remapping; choose PS2 for untouched period controls.
- Check whether you want Sons of Liberty or Substance. The standard collection comparison is with Sons of Liberty. Seek Substance specifically if the expanded original-era edition is part of your goal.
- Match the output target to your platform. PS5, PS4 Pro, and Xbox Series X list 4K maximum upscaling; Xbox Series S lists WQHD; standard PS4 lists FHD.
- Confirm the local edition. Physical stock, prices, platform SKUs, and regional availability are volatile. Check the exact store or used listing in your country before paying.
Recommended setup choices
For an original-looking Master Collection presentation
- Open the game’s display or graphics settings.
- Select Original Mode, or choose original internal rendering in Custom settings.
- Select original movies.
- Leave the platform’s default upscaling in place unless you have a specific display reason to change it.
- Play with the default controller layout first, then use remapping only if a control genuinely interferes with you.
For a sharper modern display
- Open the display or graphics settings.
- Select Adjusted Mode, or choose FHD internal rendering in Custom settings.
- Select the highest supported target—FHD, WQHD, or 4K—shown for your platform.
- Choose high-resolution movies if you prefer the updated video assets.
- On Steam, tune mouse sensitivity and save a custom keyboard-and-mouse or controller layout.
These choices change presentation and input, not the fact that this is an HD-era conversion of the original game.
What the Master Collection does not give you
- It is not a ground-up remake with newly rebuilt environments or a modernized game engine.
- It does not make every platform a 4K system; the documented ceiling varies by hardware.
- It does not reproduce the exact physical and electrical behavior of a PlayStation 2.
- It does not make the standard Sons of Liberty package identical to the expanded Substance release.
- It does not provide a published universal benchmark proving one platform has better frame rate, latency, or image quality than every other platform.
Updates and version context
Konami’s console Ver.2.0.0 notes identify Metal Gear Solid 2 as a Master Collection Vol. 1 title and document the rendering, upscaling, movie, and controller-remapping options. That console update was released November 15, 2024. The Steam update was released September 25, 2024 and added the keyboard-and-mouse layouts, custom bindings, mouse operation, mouse sensitivity controls, and controller remapping described above.

Final recommendation
Buy or play the Master Collection version if you want the easiest current route, a choice between original-looking and sharper presentation, platform-appropriate upscaling, and modern control options. PS5, PS4 Pro, and Xbox Series X offer the highest documented console target at 4K, Xbox Series S reaches WQHD, and standard PS4 reaches FHD; Steam is the most configurable for input.
Choose the original PS2 release when the hardware, disc, packaging, and period presentation are the experience—not obstacles around it. Choose Substance when you specifically want the expanded original-era edition. For everyone else, Sons of Liberty in Master Collection Vol. 1 is the sensible default.
