Image metadata is structured information associated with an image file. It can identify the camera and capture settings, describe what is pictured, record creator and copyright details, store keywords and accessibility text, or reveal where and when a photo was taken. The main families are EXIF, IPTC and XMP. Metadata may be embedded in the image itself or, especially in camera-raw workflows, stored in an accompanying XMP sidecar file.
Before sharing an image, inspect the fields it contains, preserve information needed for credit and licensing, and remove privacy-sensitive data such as GPS coordinates. The right workflow depends on the file format, whether you need read-only inspection or editing, and whether you are processing one file or thousands.
What metadata means in an image file
Metadata is data about the image rather than the visible pixels. It is stored in defined fields that software can read and write. A photograph can therefore carry information even when that information is not visible in the picture.
Depending on the camera, application and file format, fields can include:

- Creator, credit line, copyright notice and licensing terms
- Caption, description, headline and keywords
- Date and time of capture, sometimes with time-zone information
- GPS latitude, longitude, altitude and direction

Metadata is not guaranteed to exist. A phone may write extensive camera data, an edited export may retain only a few fields, and a website or content-management system may strip embedded data. There is no universal percentage of images that contain metadata, so treat each file and delivery system as a separate case.
EXIF, IPTC and XMP: the differences

EXIF is strongly associated with cameras and capture conditions. IPTC is designed for editorial and rights information. XMP was developed by Adobe and is now an ISO standard; the IPTC User Guide describes it as an Adobe-developed technology that became an ISO standard. XMP can carry properties from several schemas and can preserve application-specific editing information.
The boundaries are not perfectly exclusive. Applications often synchronize overlapping fields, such as a caption or creator name, between IPTC, XMP and EXIF. When two copies disagree, the application’s import, editing and export rules determine which value wins.
Where metadata is stored
Embedded metadata
JPEG/JFIF and TIFF files commonly contain metadata segments or directories alongside image data. Many cameras write EXIF directly into JPEGs and raw files. IPTC and XMP can also be embedded when the format and application support them.

PNG uses its own chunk structure rather than JPEG’s EXIF segments. Modern software can store selected metadata in PNG, but support varies, so do not assume that every EXIF or IPTC field survives a PNG export. Other formats have their own rules and application support.
Raw files and XMP sidecars
Camera-raw formats are often treated as original negatives. Software may avoid changing the raw file and write adjustments and descriptive metadata to a same-name .xmp sidecar instead. For example, IMG_0001.CR3 may be accompanied by IMG_0001.xmp. Move, back up and deliver the sidecar with the raw file when the workflow depends on it. A raw file copied without its sidecar can appear to have lost ratings, keywords or edit instructions.
How to view metadata
Graphical applications
Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, FotoStation, Photo Mechanic, ACDSee Pro and Extensis Portfolio can inspect and edit photo metadata. Open the file’s metadata, information or properties panel, then review both technical and rights-oriented sections. Names vary by application and operating system, so verify which fields are embedded and which are application-only.

Removal should be deliberate rather than automatic. Keep fields required for credit, licensing, accessibility or provenance; remove fields that expose a person, home, workplace or travel route.
Remove GPS only
On a copy of the file, ExifTool can remove GPS tags:

exiftool -GPS:all photo.jpgAn empty result means no GPS tags are present in the inspected file. If a raw workflow uses a sidecar, remove or edit the GPS fields in the sidecar too; otherwise an application may display the location again.
Remove all metadata

Make a separate sanitized export and retain the original securely. Do not use an all-fields deletion command when rights or attribution must travel with the image.
Use an export or share dialog
Many photo applications and mobile operating systems offer an export or sharing option to remove location data. Read the dialog carefully: “remove location” is narrower than “remove metadata,” and an application may preserve other EXIF or IPTC fields. Check the exported file independently before publication.
How to edit and preserve useful fields
For editorial or professional delivery, establish a field policy before editing. At minimum, decide who owns the work, what credit must appear, what caption and keywords are accurate, whether people or locations need description, and which fields are private.
- Keep the original. Store the camera file and any XMP sidecar in a protected archive.
- Work on a derivative. Export a publishing copy instead of destructively changing the only original.
- Enter authoritative values. Use one agreed creator name, credit line, copyright statement and caption.
- Synchronize fields. If your application writes both IPTC and XMP, confirm that the values match after saving.
- Validate the delivered file. Reopen it in a second tool or inspect it with ExifTool to ensure required fields survived.
IPTC’s current specification revision identified here is 2025.1. Its schemas have been updated through releases from 2008 to 2025. Field names and application labels can change, so use the specification and your software’s documentation when building a long-lived workflow.

Metadata, privacy and publishing systems
GPS coordinates are the most obvious privacy risk, but timestamps, device identifiers, serial numbers, captions and depicted-person fields can also reveal more than intended. A newsroom, agency or personal archive should define separate profiles for archival masters, internal review copies and public exports.

Stripping metadata in a DAM, CMS or CDN can damage copyright information and may be illegal in some countries. Configure those systems deliberately: preserve rights and accessibility fields where required, and remove only the sensitive fields your policy identifies. Test the actual downloaded asset, not just the upload preview, because a processing pipeline may rewrite the file.
Batch automation and verification
A conservative batch pattern
Use a staging directory, keep originals elsewhere, and log every operation. For example:

exiftool -overwrite_original -gps:all= sanitized/Before replacing any originals, compare a sample of sanitized files with the source files and inspect the fields that matter to your publication. For larger jobs, generate a JSON or CSV inventory before and after processing and review differences.

Embedded files versus sidecars
Your automation should identify both the image extension and a matching XMP sidecar. A script that processes only *.jpg can leave a sidecar untouched; a raw-image application may then reintroduce the supposedly removed location. Treat the pair as one logical asset and document which copy is authoritative.
Troubleshooting metadata problems
“The GPS is still visible”
- You removed GPS from the JPEG but not its XMP sidecar; process both.
- The viewer is showing a cached catalog value; refresh or reimport the file.
- The export application wrote location back during conversion; inspect the final exported file.
“My caption or copyright disappeared”
- A CMS, DAM or CDN stripped embedded metadata during processing.
- An all-metadata removal command deleted rights fields.
- The value existed only in an application catalog or sidecar that was not delivered.
Restore the original, adjust the system’s preservation settings and validate a downloaded asset.
“Two programs show different values”
The programs may read different schema copies, apply different precedence rules or display catalog data instead of file data. Inspect EXIF, IPTC and XMP explicitly and choose one authoritative field policy.
“The command changed my file unexpectedly”
ExifTool writes a backup by default unless options change that behavior. Work on copies, read the command’s output, and verify file dimensions, color profile and metadata after writing. Do not use -overwrite_original until the procedure is proven on test files.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can metadata change the visible image?
Most metadata edits change information stored around the pixels, not the visible picture. Exporting or converting a file can independently change dimensions, compression, color profile or other image properties, so verify both metadata and image quality.

No. XMP is a serialization and extensible framework; IPTC defines descriptive and rights-oriented schemas. IPTC properties can be represented inside XMP, which is why applications may show the same concept under both names.
Should I delete metadata from every photo I publish?
No. Remove privacy-sensitive fields when appropriate, but retain creator, credit, licensing, caption or accessibility information required by your policy, contract or law.
Why does a raw file need its XMP sidecar?
The sidecar may contain ratings, keywords and edit instructions that the application avoids writing into the raw capture. Separating the files can make those values appear to be missing.
