Meta’s September 23, 2026 announcement is about Muse Realtime Avatar, a system that generates a talking avatar in sync with Muse Realtime Voice. It is a technology demonstration, not proof that a newly improved metaverse is broadly available. Meta says the examples do not all represent avatars available in the Muse app, and its announcement does not establish that the feature runs on Meta Quest.
What Mark Zuckerberg’s avatar announcement actually showed
Meta AI Research introduced Muse Realtime Avatar as technology that turns its Muse Realtime Voice system into expressive, interactive avatars. The announcement describes generated video that responds to speech in real time; it does not announce a generally available new metaverse world.

Meta says the system can animate portrait images, full-body illustrations, animals, and everyday objects, while maintaining appearance and mannerisms across conversational turns. Those are capabilities Meta attributes to the system, not independently verified results for every type of input.

Meta also cautions that examples in its announcement do not all correspond to avatars available in the Muse app. The company’s Connect announcements about Muse on AI glasses and future VR hardware provide context, but do not establish that Muse Realtime Avatar is available on those products.

How Muse Realtime Avatar generates speech-synced video
The system uses reference media and speech tokens from Muse Realtime Voice. Meta says those tokens represent both words and vocal delivery, allowing the avatar’s voice, lip movements, and expressions to be generated in sync.
Technically, Meta describes the avatar generator as an audio-driven Diffusion Transformer conditioned on speech tokens, reference media, and a rolling window of recent video latents. Each generated chunk contributes context for the next one. This approach is intended to preserve continuity while limiting computation; it does not guarantee a perfectly accurate likeness or eliminate visual drift in every conversation.

Meta reports output at 448 × 768 pixels and 25 frames per second. It also reports approximately 870 milliseconds from the end of a user’s turn until the first byte of the synchronized voice-and-video response. That figure is Meta’s measurement, not an end-to-end average across different devices, networks, or usage conditions. Meta AI Research’s announcement gives the company’s technical description and measurements.
What Meta’s performance and comparison claims show
Meta says it distilled a teacher model that uses 120 evaluations per video chunk into a student model that uses two unguided evaluations. The company characterizes that as a 60-fold reduction in model evaluations per chunk while closely preserving teacher quality. This is an internal comparison between Meta’s own model configurations, not a benchmark against other vendors.

For infrastructure, Meta reports eight times the serving capacity of its two-step BF16 baseline and 12 concurrent real-time video-generation sessions on one GB200. These are company-reported figures, not independent measurements of consumer-device performance.
Meta also says it compared Muse Realtime Avatar with Runway Characters and HeyGen LiveAvatar in the vendors’ native live-call experiences. Raters held two-to-three-minute conversations with each system using matched avatar identities, then assessed visual quality, synchronization, consistency, mannerisms, and other dimensions. Meta reports that its system was preferred overall and on each evaluated dimension, except that the mannerism result against Runway was not statistically distinguishable from parity.

That comparison is informative but limited: it was published by Meta, and the announcement does not provide the sample size or full statistical details. It should be read as Meta’s reported result, not as an independently established industry ranking.

The announcement does not establish that Muse Realtime Avatar runs on a Quest headset. Meta’s Connect 2026 recap discusses Muse coming to AI glasses in the coming months and announces Meta VR Glasses hardware planned for spring 2027. A separate developer recap covers SDK availability ahead of that hardware. Neither announcement confirms Quest or future-glasses support for Muse Realtime Avatar.

Meta’s Codec Avatars work is also distinct. The company describes that program as research into metric telepresence, with work on lifelike avatars dating to 2015 and research resources shared with other researchers. The reviewed sources do not say Codec Avatars and Muse Realtime Avatar are the same system. Meta’s Codec Avatars research page describes that separate effort.
What the announcement says about provenance and misuse
Meta says generated video carries Meta Video Seal, a durable, invisible watermark embedded throughout the video without added latency. The announcement does not show that watermarking alone prevents impersonation or other misuse, so it should be understood as a provenance measure rather than a complete safety guarantee.
