This comparison separates Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, Oakley Meta HSTN and Oakley Meta Vanguard. “Meta Ray-Bans” can also refer to older Ray-Ban Meta models or prescription-oriented optical frames, which do not have identical specifications.

Battery endurance
Vanguard has the strongest published figure at up to nine hours of typical use. HSTN and Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 are both listed at up to eight hours. These are manufacturer estimates, not continuous-recording results. Camera use, 3K video, calls, AI queries, media transfer, temperature and Bluetooth conditions can reduce runtime substantially.

Outdoor protection
HSTN’s IPX4 rating is intended for light water exposure. Vanguard’s IP67 rating adds dust protection and substantially stronger water resistance. Neither rating makes the glasses indestructible or suitable for swimming. Ray-Ban Meta should be judged by the official rating for its specific generation and frame, not by Vanguard’s protection level. See Oakley’s Meta collection.
Sports use
Vanguard’s wraparound design is more secure during vigorous movement and is positioned around Garmin and Strava integrations. Garmin hardware, compatible accounts and phones may be required. That ecosystem is most valuable if you already train with those services; it is not a reason for a casual commuter to pay for Vanguard. Details are in Meta’s Vanguard announcement.

Appearance and everyday wear
Ray-Ban offers familiar styles such as Wayfarer, Skyler, Headliner and optical frames. They are easier to pair with office clothing and ordinary daily outfits than Vanguard’s wraparound shape. HSTN is a reasonable compromise for buyers who want Oakley styling without the most overtly athletic design.

Entry value
Ray-Ban’s lower listed starting price makes it the simpler route into current Meta glasses. However, polarized, Transitions, prescription and other lens upgrades can erase the headline difference. Compare equivalent lens packages rather than frame-only prices.
Prescription flexibility
Ray-Ban states that its Meta glasses are prescription-compatible. Oakley offers prescription choices on selected configurations, including options such as Prizm, polarized, clear and Transitions lenses. Availability and pricing vary by model. Verify the prescription range and final fitted price before ordering using the Ray-Ban FAQ and the HSTN product page.
Camera and video
Both current lines advertise a 12-megapixel camera and 3K video capture. Shared resolution does not prove identical processing, stabilization, exposure, low-light performance or microphone tuning. The camera’s position also affects how closely footage matches your actual point of view.

- Use the glasses for spontaneous first-person clips, hands-free moments and quick sharing.
- Use a phone when you need zoom, precise composition, distant subjects, long recording sessions or stronger low-light control.
- Test default video separately from 3K: higher resolution can increase transfer time, storage demands and battery use.
- The capture indicator is a visible privacy signal, but bright daylight can make any small light harder to notice.

Audio, calls and Meta AI
Both families use open-ear speakers, microphones, phone connectivity and the Meta AI app. Open-ear audio preserves situational awareness but can leak sound in quiet offices, trains or waiting rooms. Judge call quality by speech intelligibility, wind handling, outdoor volume and leakage rather than by speaker specifications alone.

These are camera-and-audio glasses, not full augmented-reality glasses. They do not project a general visual overlay into your field of view; responses are primarily heard through the speakers or viewed in the app.

Fit can reverse the specification-based verdict. Check nose-pad pressure, temple pressure, balance after one hour and three hours, stability while walking or running, and compatibility with helmets or hats. Vanguard’s wraparound shape may be excellent for cycling but unsuitable for small faces, formal clothing or office wear.
The camera is visible, but venues may prohibit cameras regardless of the indicator light. Do not record people where recording is prohibited or socially inappropriate. Oakley describes privacy protections and says facial recognition is not used; those are manufacturer statements, not a guarantee that data handling is risk-free. Review account, voice, photo and AI-processing policies before using the glasses in sensitive settings.

Setup and charging requirements
Both product families require Android 10 or newer or iOS 14.4 or newer, Bluetooth, wireless internet, a Meta account, the Meta AI app and a USB-C charging plug. Supported-device lists and app labels can change.
- Remove the protective tab from the case and place the glasses inside.
- Install and open Meta AI, sign in and enable Bluetooth.
- Switch on the glasses and complete pairing in the app.
- If pairing does not begin, fold both arms and hold the capture button for about 12 seconds until the internal LED flashes blue.
- Check Settings > Your glasses > Glasses update for firmware updates.
Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is listed at approximately 75 minutes for a full charge and about 22 minutes to reach 50%. HSTN is listed at about 80% in 45 minutes; Vanguard at about 75 minutes for a full charge. HSTN’s case is listed for up to 48 additional hours, while Vanguard’s is listed for up to 36 hours. Charging is through the case; some Oakley listings state that the USB-C cable is not included.

Verdict
Oakley Meta Vanguard is the performance winner, and Oakley Meta HSTN is the stronger active-use crossover. Their advantages are endurance, protection and sport-focused fit—not a fundamentally different AI assistant. Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is the better buy for most people because it is less conspicuous, more versatile as everyday eyewear and cheaper to enter. Choose Oakley only when its durability, battery or sports integrations solve a problem you actually have.
