The most important distinction is between media kept on the glasses until you transfer it and a camera-based Meta AI request, which can send an image and recognized speech to Meta’s model. Keep the capture LED unobstructed, obtain permission before recording people, and treat the app’s current labels as authoritative because controls and availability can change.
Start with the Meta AI app, not the frames
Meta places the privacy controls for its AI glasses in the Meta AI app. Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance identifies preferences for captures, voice, and notifications, along with controls for information shared with Meta. The public overview does not provide a dependable, screen-by-screen sequence of menu taps. App labels, feature availability, and the order of screens can vary by software version, account, country, and glasses generation, so use the labels displayed in your installed app rather than following an old screenshot.

Open each privacy category before your first outing. Do not assume that a setting with a familiar name has the same scope as a phone-camera setting: the glasses have a local gallery workflow, voice controls, camera-enabled AI features, and optional phone transfer. Decide which of those functions you actually want, then disable anything you will not use.

Review capture preferences
Capture settings govern the ordinary photos and videos you make with the glasses. Confirm how captures are indicated, where they remain before transfer, and which app permissions are active. Meta says media captured for the gallery stays on the glasses until you choose to move it to your phone through the Meta AI app. After transfer, it is stored in the phone’s photo roll, where the phone’s own sharing, backup, and lock-screen settings also matter.

Review voice and notification preferences
Voice controls determine whether you can invoke Meta AI or other hands-free functions by speaking. Meta’s system-card documentation says users can turn voice controls on or off. If you do not want voice-activated Meta AI available, switch voice controls off in the current app interface and verify that the status changed. Notification preferences affect how the glasses signal activity; they do not replace the physical capture indicator.
Review information shared with Meta
The app also provides a place to view or manage information shared with Meta. Read each description carefully instead of treating one master switch as a complete privacy mode. The available controls can include information-management options, location permissions, and deletion tools. The system-card documentation describing these controls was last updated on December 12, 2023, so use it as an explanation of the documented behavior, not as a guarantee that every current screen has the same wording.
Understand the three different data flows
Privacy decisions are easier when you separate three activities that can all begin with the glasses’ camera or microphone. They do not have identical handling.

Meta’s statement that gallery media remains on the glasses is about the capture-and-transfer flow. It is not a promise that no data is transmitted in any circumstance. A deliberate camera-based AI request is a separate flow: the image and speech-recognition text needed for that request may be passed to the model. Do not point the camera at a person, document, screen, or location for an AI question unless you are comfortable with that input being processed in that way.

Keep the capture indicator visible
Ray-Ban Meta glasses use notification and capture LEDs to signal activity. Meta says taking a photo, recording a video, or streaming activates those LEDs. The capture indicator is a practical safeguard for people nearby: someone who notices it has a visible cue that the glasses are capturing or streaming.
Meta also says its features prohibit photo or video capture when the LED is covered, and its guidance disallows deliberately covering the LED while recording. Do not place tape, a sticker, a finger, hair, or an accessory over it, and do not buy or use a modification intended to hide it. If the indicator is blocked, damaged, or impossible to see, stop using the camera function until the problem is resolved.
What the LED does and does not tell people
- The LED indicates the capture or streaming activity Meta describes; it is not a guarantee that no other app or phone function is active.
- A visible indicator does not provide consent. You still need to ask before capturing people.
- The indicator should remain unobstructed during use, including when you are recording yourself or streaming.
Voice controls and deletion of Meta AI recordings
Voice activation can make the glasses useful without touching a phone, but it also changes what you say near the microphone and when a request can begin. Decide whether the convenience is worth having voice controls enabled. Meta’s system card says users can turn voice controls off, so locate that control in the current app and confirm its state before entering a meeting, clinic, classroom, or other setting where spoken prompts could be inappropriate.

Meta says users can delete Meta AI voice recordings. Its guidance states that information deleted this way will not be used for future training. Deletion does not immediately change what a model has already learned, however; removing a recording is not the same as instantly retraining or resetting model behavior. Use the app’s deletion control when you want to remove a recording, and read the confirmation so you know whether you deleted one item or a larger history.

Voice recordings and gallery media are different categories. Deleting a voice recording does not automatically explain what happens to a photo or video, and deleting gallery media is a separate action. Treat each control according to the category named on the screen.
Camera-based Meta AI needs a separate privacy decision
A normal gallery capture and an AI question about what you see may start with the same camera, but the processing path is different. Meta’s system card gives the example of asking the glasses to identify something in view: the system can capture the image and send it, along with the recognized text of your spoken prompt, to the model.
Before asking an AI question
- Check that Meta AI and voice controls are enabled only if you intend to use them.
- Look at the scene through the glasses and identify people, paperwork, computer screens, badges, addresses, or other information that could be exposed.
- Ask permission from anyone who could be captured or discussed, especially if the request concerns them.
- Phrase the request without unnecessary personal details. If you only need help with an object, keep people and documents out of the frame.
- After the response, review the app’s information controls if you want to manage related activity or delete available records.
Do not describe the AI flow as a guarantee that the glasses continuously upload everything they see. The documented behavior concerns a user-invoked camera-based request. At the same time, do not infer that all camera use is local merely because ordinary gallery media can remain on the glasses until transfer.
Bystander privacy is still your responsibility
Meta’s guidance tells users to ask permission before capturing people and to avoid sensitive locations, places they would not want captured, or places where there is an expectation of privacy. That advice applies even when a recording is brief, even when the capture LED is visible, and even when you plan to delete the file later.

Places to avoid
- Areas where people reasonably expect privacy, such as changing areas, restrooms, or private treatment spaces.
- Workplaces or events where confidential documents, screens, conversations, or identification badges are visible.
- Any location whose operator has prohibited recording or where the people present have not agreed to it.
People to ask
Ask before taking a photo, recording video, streaming, or directing a camera-based AI question at a person. Explain what you intend to do if the capture could include them incidentally. A person can decline; respect that decision by changing the frame or stopping the capture.
Do Ray-Ban Meta glasses record all the time?
There is no supported blanket answer that they either record everything continuously or never transmit anything. Meta documents that gallery photos and videos remain on the glasses until you transfer them, while a deliberate camera-based Meta AI request can send the image and recognized spoken prompt to the model. Photos, videos, and streaming activate the notification and capture LEDs, and Meta says capture is blocked when the LED is covered.
Use the activity you are performing as the deciding factor. If you are making a gallery capture, think about local storage and later transfer. If you are asking Meta AI to interpret the view, think about model processing of the image and recognized speech. If voice controls are enabled, remember that spoken commands are part of the interaction; turn them off when you do not want that feature available.

A practical pre-use checklist
Complete this checklist in the installed Meta AI app and on the glasses themselves. Because Meta does not publish a stable screen-by-screen path, the wording below describes the controls to find, not guaranteed tap names.

- Open the Meta AI app and identify the privacy or settings area. Confirm that the app recognizes the correct glasses and account before changing preferences.
- Review capture preferences. Understand when gallery media is created, how the glasses indicate capture, and when files move to the phone.
- Review voice controls. Leave them on only if you want voice-activated Meta AI or related hands-free features. Turn them off for situations where you do not want spoken interaction available.
- Review notifications. Make sure you understand the app’s notification choices and the glasses’ physical activity signals.
- Review information shared with Meta. Open the available information-management controls rather than assuming the default setting is the one you want.
- Check location permissions. The system-card documentation describes location-permission controls; set them according to the features you intend to use and the location disclosure you accept.
- Find deletion controls. Note where Meta AI voice recordings and gallery media can be deleted before you need the controls.
- Inspect the capture LED. Confirm that it is visible and unobstructed. Do not use a cover or modification intended to hide it.
- Set a personal recording rule. Ask permission before capturing people and avoid sensitive places or places where privacy is expected.
- Test your understanding with two separate examples. Make a mental distinction between transferring a normal photo to your phone and asking Meta AI to identify something in view. The first concerns gallery storage and transfer; the second can involve sending an image and recognized speech to the model.
What to do when a privacy control is unclear
The menu name does not match an older guide
Use the closest current category shown in the app and read its explanatory text. Meta’s public overview does not promise permanent menu names, and the system-card description is from December 12, 2023. Do not enable a feature merely because an old tutorial places it in a different menu.
You cannot find a feature
Availability can differ by region, account, software version, language, and glasses generation. The current product page lists a Gen 2 variant and describes app-based management, but that listing does not establish that every privacy feature is available to every user. Check the controls actually shown for your account and glasses.
You are unsure whether something was sent
Ask what action you took. A normal gallery capture is documented as remaining on the glasses until transfer. A camera-based AI request is documented as sending the captured image and recognized spoken prompt to the model. If you cannot distinguish the two, avoid repeating the request with sensitive material and review the app’s information-management and deletion controls.

Stop photo, video, and streaming use. Meta says photo or video capture is prohibited when the LED is covered, and its guidance disallows deliberately covering it while recording. Remove anything blocking the indicator and do not resume until it is clearly visible.
You deleted a voice recording but still see the same AI behavior
That result is consistent with Meta’s qualification: deleted information will not be used for future training, but deletion does not immediately change what a model has already learned. Deletion removes the specified information; it is not an instant reset of model behavior.
Keep the settings decision current
Privacy settings are not a one-time setup. Recheck them after an app update, a glasses software update, a change of account or region, or a switch between generations. Meta’s current product materials describe the app as the place to manage the glasses, while the responsible-innovation guidance covers AI glasses more generally. Those materials do not document every current menu path, so the installed app remains the authoritative source for the controls available to you.
The safest operating pattern is straightforward: enable only the functions you need, understand whether an action is a local gallery capture or a camera-based AI request, keep the capture indicator visible, ask permission before recording, and avoid places where privacy is expected. That combination addresses both the technical data path and the people affected by the glasses.
