Active Memory carries important information about you between conversations and retrieves details that matter to a later task. Active Focus describes how the model keeps pursuing a difficult goal: trying another approach, working through blockers, adapting to new information, asking for clarification, and checking in before important actions. Memory is about the context brought forward; Focus is about the work sustained now.
The short answer: context retrieval versus sustained execution
Meta presents Muse Wonder as an agent that needs both capabilities. A long-running assistant can fail because it does not bring forward a relevant preference, project fact, or prior decision. It can also fail after retrieving the right context if it gives up at the first error, follows a plan that no longer fits, or takes an important action without confirming it. Active Memory addresses the first problem. Active Focus addresses the second.

| Dimension | Active Memory | Active Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Primary function | Carry and retrieve important context across conversations | Continue working toward a challenging goal |
| Time horizon | Across separate conversations and later tasks | During the current piece of work, including multiple attempts |
| Typical question it answers | “What earlier information about me or this project is relevant now?” | “How should the agent continue when the first plan stalls or conditions change?” |
| Actions Meta associates with it | Remembering important information and actively retrieving relevant details | Trying alternatives, working through blockers, adapting, asking for clarification, and checking in before important actions |
| Potential failure | Relevant context is missing, outdated, or retrieved incorrectly | The task stalls, repeats an ineffective approach, or proceeds without enough confirmation |
The last row is a practical way to reason about the concepts, not a published head-to-head error-rate comparison. Meta’s public descriptions define the roles; they do not promise that every remembered detail will be correct or that every difficult task will be completed.

What Active Memory means in Muse Wonder
It is selective continuity between conversations
Meta Research defines Active Memory as “carrying important context about you across conversations and actively retrieving the details relevant to the task at hand.” That wording has two parts. First, information can remain useful after the original conversation ends. Second, the model is expected to retrieve the subset that matters for the new request instead of treating every previous message as equally relevant.

For example, suppose you previously explained that a software project must support a particular database, that your team uses a specific deployment process, and that you prefer concise status updates. In a later conversation, an assistant with Active Memory could use those facts when proposing an implementation plan or drafting an update. The value is not merely that old text exists somewhere; it is that the relevant details are brought into the new task.
Memory is not the same as a context window
Muse Wonder’s developer page lists a context window of 1 million tokens for both Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full. A context window is the amount of material a model can process in one request or working context. Active Memory is a behavior for carrying and retrieving useful information across conversations. A very large context window can help an agent handle a long document or extensive project transcript, but it does not by itself establish that the model will retain a fact after a conversation ends, identify it as important, or retrieve it at the right time.
Conversely, cross-conversation memory does not mean that every historical message is permanently available in full. Meta’s public definition emphasizes important context and relevant retrieval. The materials announcing Muse Wonder do not specify a retention period, a complete storage policy, deletion mechanics, or a guarantee that all remembered details will be recalled correctly. Treat those as product questions to verify in the current service documentation rather than assuming that “memory” means unlimited, permanent recall.

What a user should do when memory matters
- State which facts are durable requirements, rather than leaving them buried in an old conversation.
- Ask the assistant to identify the assumptions it is using before it makes a consequential recommendation.
- Correct outdated information explicitly. A remembered preference may have changed since the earlier conversation.
- For sensitive work, confirm the applicable account, organization, and data-handling controls before sharing private information.
These habits do not change how Meta implements Active Memory. They reduce the practical risk of an agent using a stale or misunderstood detail.
What Active Focus means in Muse Wonder
Persistence is a process, not a larger store of facts
Meta describes Active Focus as the way Muse Wonder “continues working toward a challenging goal: trying alternative approaches, working through blockers, and adapting to new information.” It also says the model asks for clarification when needed and checks in before important actions. The focus is therefore on task execution over time: planning, attempting, diagnosing, revising, and deciding when human input is required.
Consider a coding task that fails a test. A merely persistent-sounding assistant might repeat the same command or produce another unexamined answer. Active Focus, as Meta frames it, should investigate the blocker, consider a different implementation or diagnostic path, incorporate the new error information, and continue only when the next step is justified. If the requirement is ambiguous, it should ask rather than silently choose an interpretation. If the next action could have important consequences, it should check in first.

A typical focus loop
- Define the goal. The agent identifies the requested outcome and any constraints it already knows.
- Choose an approach. It creates a plan or selects the first useful action.
- Observe the result. It uses the output, error, or newly supplied information to assess progress.
- Diagnose the blocker. If the path fails, it determines whether the problem is an assumption, a missing input, a tool error, or an unsuitable method.
- Try an alternative. It changes the method instead of treating the first failed attempt as the end of the task.
- Request clarification when necessary. If two plausible interpretations would lead to materially different outcomes, it asks the user.
- Check in before an important action. It pauses for confirmation when the next step could create a meaningful external effect or irreversible change.
This loop explains the intended behavior, not a guarantee that every model run will perform every step perfectly. The quality of the result still depends on the task, available tools, instructions, information quality, and safety limits.

How the two capabilities work together
Active Memory supplies relevant background; Active Focus uses that background while pursuing the current objective. Imagine asking Muse Wonder to prepare a migration plan for a service. Memory could retrieve the service’s earlier compatibility requirement and your team’s preferred rollout sequence. Focus could then break the work into stages, test an approach, respond to a newly discovered dependency, revise the plan, and ask for approval before a production change.
Either capability can be useful without the other. A system may retrieve a preference but still fail to execute a complex plan. It may reason through a difficult task but waste time if it does not know an earlier constraint. Meta’s framing is complementary: context retrieval helps the agent start from the right assumptions, while sustained focus helps it keep moving when the task is not solved in one response.
| Situation | Memory contribution | Focus contribution |
|---|---|---|
| A recurring writing project | Retrieves the project’s audience, terminology, and standing constraints | Iterates on an outline, handles missing source material, and asks before changing the brief |
| A software debugging session | Brings forward the runtime, architecture, and previously ruled-out causes | Analyzes new errors, tests another hypothesis, and stops to request access or clarification when blocked |
| A multi-step administrative task | Recalls the user’s relevant preferences or approved defaults | Tracks progress, adapts to a changed form or requirement, and confirms before submission |
Where each capability can fail
Active Memory failure modes
- Missing context: the assistant does not bring forward a fact that matters to the new request.
- Wrong retrieval: it selects a detail that resembles the current situation but belongs to an older or different project.
- Stale context: a preference, deadline, or technical dependency has changed.
- Overconfident use: the assistant acts as if a remembered detail is certain without asking you to confirm it.
The practical response is to restate critical constraints in the current prompt and ask the model to list the assumptions it is applying. Meta has not published a promise that Active Memory eliminates these errors.
Active Focus failure modes
- Stalling: the agent stops after the first failed attempt instead of changing strategy.
- Looping: it repeats a similar action without learning from the result.
- Uncontrolled adaptation: it changes the plan so far that it no longer serves the original goal.
- Insufficient clarification: it guesses when the request is genuinely ambiguous.
- Premature action: it takes a consequential step without the promised check-in.
When a task appears stuck, ask for the current blocker, the approaches already attempted, and two alternative next steps. For a high-impact action, require a preview of what will happen and explicit confirmation before execution.

| Model or access route | Launch information stated by Meta | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Muse Wonder through the Meta Model API | Available at the October 12, 2026 announcement | Availability and commercial terms can change |
| Muse Wonder through Muse Code | Available at launch | Account and subscription requirements may apply |
| Muse Wonder Full | Available to Muse Code subscribers | Described as subscription-only through Muse Code |
| Muse experiences | Meta said Wonder would soon power them, initially rolling out to subscribers | “Soon” is a dated launch statement, not a guaranteed present-day rollout status |
The developer page lists a 1 million-token context window for both models. That figure describes the model’s stated context capacity; it does not convert Active Memory into unlimited personal history, nor does it prove that a million tokens can be used economically or effectively for every task.
Pricing information available at launch
Meta’s developer page, accessed October 13, 2026, listed Muse Wonder API pricing at $4.00 per million input tokens, $0.20 per million cached input tokens, and $20.00 per million output tokens. The page labeled Muse Wonder Full as subscription-only through Muse Code. These are vendor-published commercial terms, not an independent cost comparison, and they should be verified before budgeting because model pricing and subscription terms are volatile.
| Item | Published figure or term | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Input tokens | $4.00 per million | Applies to the listed Muse Wonder API input pricing at the stated access date |
| Cached input tokens | $0.20 per million | Applies to cached input under the listed API terms |
| Output tokens | $20.00 per million | Applies to generated output under the listed API terms |
| Muse Wonder Full | Subscription-only through Muse Code | No separate per-token price was stated in the supplied product information |
Neither Active Memory nor Active Focus should be treated as a separate add-on with its own published unit price. They are capability descriptions attached to the models and experiences. Your actual cost depends on the access route, token usage, caching, and subscription terms in effect when you use the service.
What Meta claims about performance
Meta says the Muse Wonder series achieves state-of-the-art results across selected benchmarks for agents, memory, and coding. Its research announcement names FocusBench for focus and SWE-Marathon for sustained software execution, and the developer page displays a multi-model benchmark table. A benchmark result is evidence about the tested setup, not a universal guarantee for personal, professional, or production work.
When evaluating a performance claim, check which model was tested, the exact benchmark version, the tasks and tools allowed, the comparison models, and whether the score measures memory retrieval, sustained execution, coding, or another capability. The published material does not establish independent real-world verification of Meta’s claims. It also does not provide a single score that can be read as “Active Memory is better than Active Focus” or the reverse; they measure different functions.
Privacy, safety, and human control
Meta says the models are trained to handle private information carefully, resist misuse, and check in before important actions. Meta also said additional safety evaluation reporting would follow. These are statements about the company’s goals and evaluations, not a reason to remove human oversight.

Memory makes data governance especially important because information can remain relevant beyond the conversation in which it was first provided. Before using an agent with confidential material, determine which account and organization controls apply, who can access stored information, how corrections or deletion work, and whether the task is permitted under your policies. The public launch descriptions do not specify retention duration or deletion mechanics, so do not infer those details from the term “Active Memory.”

Prompts that test or use Active Memory
Make the required continuity explicit: “Use the project constraints I gave in earlier conversations, list which ones you retrieved, and ask me to confirm any that may be outdated.” This separates retrieval from silent assumption. If the result omits a critical fact, include it again rather than assuming the memory system will recover it on a second attempt.
Prompts that encourage Active Focus
Define what to do when the first approach fails: “Try the initial plan, report the blocker, propose two alternatives, and continue with the safer alternative after I approve it.” For ambiguous work, specify a clarification threshold: “If two interpretations would change the result, stop and ask before proceeding.” For external effects, state the boundary: “Prepare the action and show me the exact changes; do not execute until I confirm.”
Prompts that combine both
A combined instruction might read: “Use the standing requirements from our previous discussions. First summarize the requirements you retrieved. Then produce a staged plan, test the lowest-risk step, explain any blocker, and ask before making an irreversible change.” The first sentence exercises the context-retrieval concept; the remaining instructions define sustained execution and user control.
Common misconceptions
“Active Memory means the model remembers everything.”
No. Meta’s definition refers to important context and relevant retrieval. It does not promise complete transcripts, permanent retention, perfect recall, or correct retrieval of every detail.
Best Value
“A 1-million-token window is the same as long-term memory.”
No. The window is a stated per-model context capacity. Long-term memory concerns what information is carried across conversations and retrieved later. The two capabilities can support each other but are not interchangeable.
“Active Focus means the agent will never get stuck.”
No. Focus describes an intended pattern of persistence, alternative approaches, adaptation, clarification, and check-ins. It does not guarantee success, unlimited tool access, or correct decisions.
“The two labels are competing modes.”
Meta presents them as complementary properties of an agent. Memory helps supply the right background; Focus helps use that background while pursuing a difficult objective.
“Meta’s benchmark language proves everyday superiority.”
No. “State of the art” is Meta’s characterization of selected evaluations. Scores depend on the benchmark and conditions, and the supplied public material does not provide independent validation of everyday performance.
Which capability matters for your task?
| Your need | Capability to emphasize | Useful safeguard |
|---|---|---|
| Continue a personal or project preference across separate chats | Active Memory | Ask the model to show and confirm the retrieved assumptions |
| Finish a difficult, multi-step task despite errors | Active Focus | Require blocker reports, alternative approaches, and a stopping rule |
| Work with changing requirements | Both | Restate new requirements and ask the model to revise its plan |
| Take an action with external or irreversible effects | Active Focus with explicit user control | Require a preview and confirmation immediately before execution |
| Handle sensitive historical information | Active Memory with privacy review | Verify retention, access, and deletion controls for your account |
If you are deciding whether a Muse Wonder feature is suitable, start with the failure you most need to prevent. If the risk is losing the right background, investigate memory behavior and controls. If the risk is an agent abandoning or mishandling a complex workflow, investigate its execution behavior, tool permissions, and approval checkpoints. A large context window or an impressive benchmark score cannot answer either question by itself.
Bottom line
Active Memory is about which relevant context Muse Wonder carries forward and retrieves. Active Focus is about how it keeps working toward the current goal when the path is difficult or changes. Meta describes the two as complementary: one helps the agent begin with the right information, and the other helps it pursue the task responsibly. The launch access details, prices, safety statements, and benchmark results are dated Meta claims, so verify current terms and keep human review for sensitive information and consequential actions.
