Meta Muse vs. ChatGPT agent: features, permissions, and privacy compared

Meta Muse is the currently announced product; ChatGPT agent is not. Meta launched Muse in the United States in September 2026 and describes it as an agent that can work across connected apps and a browser. OpenAI’s current Help Center article says, “ChatGPT agent is no longer available,” and directs users to ChatGPT Work for longer multi-step tasks and finished deliverables. That article does not establish that ChatGPT Work has the former agent’s browser, purchasing, memory, or background capabilities.

That status difference changes the comparison. The useful question is not which service wins a feature checklist from an earlier period, but what Meta currently says Muse can do, what OpenAI currently confirms about Work, and how each company describes permissions, credentials, retention, training, and human oversight. The descriptions below are vendor statements, not independent security testing.

Current status: Muse is rolling out; ChatGPT agent has been discontinued

Meta’s September 2026 announcement introduced Muse in the United States, with rollout on iOS, Android, and the web. Meta also announced planned availability on its AI glasses. Muse is presented as an agent for connected-app work, browser navigation, forms, email, travel, and longer-running goals. Meta says it can continue working after the user closes the app.

OpenAI’s current Help Center page for ChatGPT agent states that the agent is no longer available. It points readers to ChatGPT Work for longer multi-step tasks and finished deliverables. The same page does not document whether Work reproduces the discontinued agent’s virtual-browser interaction, connected-app actions, recurring schedules, purchase flows, or persistent background behavior. Those former capabilities should therefore be treated as historical descriptions, not as a promise about Work.

For a present-day buying or deployment decision, compare Muse with the currently documented ChatGPT Work path only at the points OpenAI has confirmed. Where the documentation is silent, the accurate entry is “not established,” not an assumption of parity.

What Meta says Muse can do

Connected apps and browser tasks

Muse is designed to operate through connectors to services a user authorizes. Meta describes work such as completing forms, handling email, planning or booking travel, and navigating websites. The agent can pursue a longer goal rather than stopping after one response, and Meta says it may continue after the app is closed.

Meta also describes proactive behavior: Muse can remember relevant details and make suggestions. The announcement does not define a universal memory duration or promise that every account receives identical behavior, so users should inspect the product’s own controls before relying on memory for sensitive or consequential work.

Payments through Link

Meta says Muse can use Link’s wallet and one-time-use card details. Eligible purchases receive Link purchase protections, according to Meta’s announcement. The product description does not establish a comparable purchase workflow for ChatGPT Work. Muse’s purchase flow is also subject to a human approval prompt showing the exact purchase details before the transaction is completed.

Where Muse is available

The announced rollout covers the United States and lists iOS, Android, and web entry points. Meta’s announcement mentions future AI-glasses availability, not a generally available glasses release. It says Muse is free for most needs, with subscriptions for people who want to do more, but gives no subscription prices or published usage limits in the cited material.

What is known about the former ChatGPT agent—and what is not known about Work

OpenAI’s older agent-mode documentation described a guided or interruptible agent that could use apps and signed-in websites, schedule recurring tasks, and operate a virtual browser. It also described confirmations for high-impact actions, user takeover for sensitive inputs, and controls for organizations. Those details explain the product that was discontinued; they are not evidence that ChatGPT Work currently offers the same functions.

The current OpenAI article identifies Work as the route for longer multi-step tasks and finished deliverables. It does not, in the reviewed material, specify browser screenshots, website takeover, connector scope, persistent memory, background continuation, payment handling, or recurring schedules for Work. A team considering Work should ask OpenAI for those exact capabilities and their plan availability rather than importing the old agent’s feature list.

Feature comparison at a glance

Dimension Meta Muse OpenAI status How to interpret it
Current status Launched in the United States in September 2026; rollout announced for iOS, Android, and web. OpenAI says ChatGPT agent is no longer available and points users to ChatGPT Work. Muse is an announced current product; the old agent is not a current alternative.
Connected-app work Meta describes connector-based tasks, including email, forms, and travel. Former agent documentation described apps; Work capability is not established in the cited article. Do not attribute legacy agent connectors to Work without confirmation.
Browser operation Meta describes a virtualized Chromium browser and an accessibility-tree view for the browser sub-agent. Former agent used screenshots of a virtual browser; current Work browser behavior is not stated. The implementations and current availability are not equivalent on the evidence available.
Long-running work Muse may continue after the app closes and can pursue longer goals. Work is described as a path for longer multi-step tasks, but background continuation is not specified. Ask whether Work runs unattended and for how long.
Memory and suggestions Meta says Muse remembers relevant details and can make suggestions. Equivalent persistent memory for Work is not established. Do not assume the same memory model.
Payments Link wallet and one-time-use card details; eligible purchases have Link purchase protections. No Work purchase workflow is documented in the cited article. Muse has the only described purchase path here.
Entry points Muse app, WhatsApp, and web are described in Meta’s rollout materials. Former agent documentation listed web, mobile, and desktop apps, but the agent is discontinued. Legacy entry points do not prove current availability.
Price Free for most needs, with subscriptions for heavier use; prices not stated. ChatGPT Work pricing is not stated in the cited help article. There is no supported price winner.

How Muse’s permission model works

Sentinel separates proposing an action from authorizing it

Meta describes a layered design. Muse proposes a connector action, while a separate host-side component called Sentinel checks the user’s policy. Sentinel can allow, deny, or require the user before an action proceeds. Meta also says Sentinel governs network egress, so the permission decision covers outbound connections as well as individual connector operations.

Meta’s research article summarizes the division this way: “Muse proposes actions, but only Sentinel can grant permission to perform action.” That separation is intended to limit what a model can do if it generates an unsafe or mistaken instruction. It is a design description, not a certification that every policy configuration is safe.

Scoped connector workers and surrogate credentials

Built-in connector workers receive scoped access to the credentials needed for their particular service. Meta says the agent does not see real tokens; it receives surrogate tokens instead. For email, Meta says its connector filters one-time codes, password-reset links, and login magic links. That filtering is meant to keep especially sensitive authentication material out of routine agent handling.

Meta says credentials and tokens are held in a separate isolated container inside the user’s Muse virtual machine, apart from the agent runtime. Isolation reduces direct exposure, but it does not mean Meta personnel can never access service data. Meta states that operational policies restrict personnel access while allowing access when needed to support, secure, or operate the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Browser takeover and purchase approval

Muse’s browser is described as Chromium-based and placed behind a virtualization layer. The user can see the browser and take over. Meta says the browser sub-agent receives an accessibility-tree snapshot rather than the page’s raw DOM and cannot run JavaScript in the page context. During user takeover or secure credential entry, the sub-agent is paused.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

When a purchase is ready, Meta says Muse asks the user to approve the exact purchase details. This is a meaningful checkpoint: the agent may prepare a transaction, but the described flow does not let it silently authorize the final purchase on the user’s behalf.

How OpenAI described permissions for the discontinued agent

OpenAI’s help article says agent mode could access sensitive information from enabled apps and signed-in websites. It described confirmation prompts for high-impact actions, refusal behavior for disallowed tasks, prompt-injection monitoring, and “watch mode,” which required supervision on certain websites.

OpenAI advised users to enable only the apps they needed, use takeover mode for sensitive login fields, and clear remote-browser data after sensitive sessions. The article says screenshots were not captured while the user controlled the browser to enter sensitive information. These safeguards belong to the discontinued agent documentation; the article does not state that ChatGPT Work implements the same controls.

Organization controls in the OpenAI documentation

For Enterprise and Edu administrators, the article described workspace toggles, role-based access controls, app-availability controls, website blocking, and data-residency or custom-retention behavior. It said agent conversations appeared in Compliance API logs, while individual agent actions did not. Because the agent itself is discontinued, administrators should verify which of these controls apply to Work and whether the names or scopes have changed.

Credential handling and what the agent can see

Question Muse Former ChatGPT agent documentation
Where are credentials kept? Meta says connected credentials and tokens are in a separate isolated container in the Muse VM. OpenAI described signed-in websites and user takeover for login input; the cited article does not provide an equivalent token-storage architecture.
Can the model see the real token? Meta says Muse receives surrogate tokens rather than real credentials. Not stated in the cited OpenAI article.
What browser representation is provided? An accessibility-tree snapshot; no raw DOM access and no page-context JavaScript execution, according to Meta. Screenshots of a virtual browser were described.
What happens during sensitive entry? The browser sub-agent is paused during secure credential entry or user takeover. Users were told to use takeover mode; screenshots were not captured while the user controlled the browser for sensitive information.

These are different implementation descriptions, not a security ranking. An accessibility tree can still expose the text and controls needed to act, while screenshots can reveal visual content. The important operational question is when the model is prevented from observing or acting and who must approve the next step.

Privacy, retention, and model training

Meta’s Muse data claims

Meta says files and generated or used data are stored in the user’s Muse virtual machine. Users can inspect, edit, and download files, including Muse’s memory about them. The VM is continuously backed up. Meta also says conversations and VM data are not shared with its advertising systems.

That advertising statement has a qualification. Meta notes that agent-initiated web activity can indirectly affect ads—for example, a merchant could use a visit to show an advertisement later. “Not shared with ad systems” therefore does not mean that actions taken on the web can never influence advertising elsewhere.

Meta says sanitized interaction trajectories may be used to train future model checkpoints by default. Personally identifiable information is removed before that use, and users can opt out in Muse settings. The precise control should be checked in the current app because rollout settings may change.

Confidential VM is described as future

Meta’s technical article presents a Confidential VM as a capability planned for later in 2026. Meta says the design is intended to cryptographically prevent the company from accessing VM data. A small group of testers is using it while external audit work proceeds. It should not be treated as generally available or as protection provided automatically by the current Muse service.

OpenAI’s documented retention and training controls

OpenAI says agent chats, browsing history, and screenshots remain in conversation history until the user deletes them. Deleted chats and associated screenshots are removed from OpenAI’s systems within 90 days, according to the current Help Center article.

Users can turn off model training for new conversations in Data Controls. OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, and Edu business data is not used for training by default. Plus and Pro data is handled under the privacy policy and may be used for model improvement if the user opted in. Authorized staff and service providers may access agent content for stated purposes such as security, support, legal matters, or model improvement when the user has not opted out.

Privacy question Meta Muse OpenAI documentation
Ad-system sharing Meta says Muse conversations and VM data are not shared with Meta ad systems; web activity can still have indirect advertising effects. The cited article does not establish a comparable Work advertising statement.
Training default Sanitized interaction trajectories may train future checkpoints by default; an opt-out is available in Muse settings. Business, Enterprise, and Edu business data are not used for training by default; Plus and Pro treatment follows the privacy policy and an opt-in choice.
Deletion timing Continuous VM backup and user file controls are described; a universal deletion deadline is not stated. Deleted agent chats and associated screenshots are removed within 90 days.
Provider personnel access Operational policies restrict access but do not make access impossible when needed to operate, secure, or support the service. Authorized staff and service providers may access content for specified purposes, subject to account settings and policy.
Stronger confidential environment Confidential VM is described as a later-2026 capability under testing and audit work. No equivalent Work feature is established in the cited article.

Prompt injection and mistakes remain material risks

Neither company claims that its agent is risk-free. Meta explicitly says, “Like any AI system, Muse will sometimes make mistakes,” and identifies prompt injection as an open problem. A malicious instruction on a webpage, in an email, or in a document can try to redirect an agent away from the user’s goal.

OpenAI likewise warns that connected websites and apps can expose sensitive information and that prompt injection can lead to unintended actions. Confirmation prompts and monitoring reduce some failure modes but do not replace supervision, least-privilege access, or careful review of the final result.

  • Connect only the apps required for the task.
  • Keep financial, health, employment, and identity data out of an agent workflow unless the benefit justifies the exposure.
  • Review every recipient, amount, attachment, permission change, and destination before approval.
  • Use takeover or secure-entry mode for passwords, one-time codes, recovery links, and payment credentials.
  • After a sensitive browser session, clear remote-browser data where the service provides that control.
  • Assume that a webpage or document may contain instructions aimed at the agent rather than at you.

Which service fits which use case?

Choose Muse when its described autonomy is the requirement

Muse is the better documented fit when you need an agent to work across connected apps, navigate a browser, remember useful context, or continue a longer task after you close the app. Its Sentinel policy layer, scoped connectors, accessibility-tree browser view, and purchase approval flow are the controls Meta currently describes for those jobs.

Confirm U.S. availability, connector support, subscription limits, and the exact approval prompts in your account before assigning business-critical work. The announcement does not provide a price table, service-level commitment, or universal task limit.

Choose ChatGPT Work only after confirming the replacement capabilities

Work is the current OpenAI path named for longer multi-step tasks and finished deliverables. It may be appropriate if your organization already uses OpenAI’s workspace controls and wants continuity with that environment. However, the cited current article does not confirm that Work can browse websites, take over a virtual browser, run in the background, remember details, schedule recurring tasks, or complete purchases in the way the discontinued agent was documented.

Before migration, obtain written answers to these questions: Which connectors are supported? Can a task continue after the user closes the app? What data is retained, for how long, and in which regions? Are screenshots created? Which actions require confirmation? Can administrators block sites and apps? Are conversations and actions available in compliance logs? The answers, not the old agent page, should determine suitability.

A practical evaluation checklist

  1. Verify availability. Confirm that Muse is enabled for your country and account, and that the OpenAI feature you are evaluating is Work rather than the discontinued agent.
  2. Inventory the task. Write down every app, website, file, message, payment, and approval the workflow touches.
  3. Map permissions. Identify the minimum connector scopes, whether actions are proposed or immediately executed, and which steps require a person.
  4. Test with synthetic data. Use a non-sensitive mailbox, dummy forms, and a low-value transaction before connecting production accounts.
  5. Inspect browser behavior. Determine whether the agent receives screenshots, an accessibility tree, page text, or another representation, and when that view is paused.
  6. Set retention controls. Record deletion procedures, training defaults, account-level opt-outs, backup behavior, and any administrator retention settings.
  7. Define a stop rule. Require human review for money movement, external messages, permission changes, account recovery, and publication.
  8. Recheck after updates. Rollouts, plan names, data controls, and successor features can change; review the provider’s current documentation before expanding access.

Bottom line

Muse is the only product in this comparison with a current, detailed description of connected-app and browser autonomy. Meta says it can pursue longer goals, continue after the app closes, use scoped connectors, and request approval for purchases, with Sentinel controlling permissions and network egress. OpenAI says ChatGPT agent has been discontinued and identifies ChatGPT Work as the successor path for longer tasks, but the cited documentation does not establish feature parity with the old agent.

Privacy also depends on the account and setting, not a simple “private” label. Muse keeps credentials separate from the runtime and offers a training opt-out, while Meta acknowledges operational access and describes its stronger Confidential VM as future. OpenAI documents deletion within 90 days for deleted agent chats and screenshots and different training defaults by account type. Treat both companies’ safeguards as stated designs, apply least privilege, and verify the current Work feature set before treating it as a replacement.
