Meta Muse vs. Apple HomeView: Two Very Different Bets on Ambient Computing

Meta Muse and Apple HomeView solve different problems. Muse is a delegated software agent that can work across connected accounts—sending email, completing forms, shopping or booking travel after you grant permission. HomeView is a $299 household screen and speaker that keeps Siri, home controls, cameras, music and FaceTime visible in one place.

The choice is therefore less about which assistant is “smarter” and more about what you are willing to trust: Muse needs access to parts of your digital life, while HomeView asks your household to adopt another shared screen.

What Meta Muse is—and what it can do

Meta announced Muse on September 8, 2026, describing it as “a secure, private personal AI agent that proactively helps with people’s goals and suggests ideas.” It runs in Muse Secure VM, which Meta describes as a dedicated virtual machine that houses both the agent and a person’s data.

Delegated work across connected services

Muse can work across selected apps after you connect them and choose the level of access. Meta’s examples include sending email, filling out forms, booking travel and making purchases. It can remember information that matters to you, suggest ideas and continue a task in the background rather than waiting for every step in a chat.

At Connect 2026, Meta also showed connectors such as access to the Shopify catalog. The company says Muse will reach its AI glasses soon, where it could act on what the wearer sees—for example, identifying a product on a shelf or reading a school-supplies list.

What permission and privacy controls exist

Muse is not a local-only assistant. Its usefulness depends on account connections, and those connections can expose sensitive data. Meta says users decide which apps to connect and how much access to grant. The service is designed to ask for confirmation before sensitive actions such as sending an email or making a purchase.

Meta also lists an audit trail, credential separation, the ability to disconnect services and an option to keep interactions from being used to train Meta’s AI models. A Confidential VM using encryption keys held by the user is planned for later in 2026; that is a future protection, not a feature you can assume is available at launch.

Availability and pricing

Meta’s cited launch description covers a United States rollout on iOS, Android and muse.ai, with AI-glasses access coming soon. Meta says there is a free offering for most needs and subscription plans for heavier use, but the September announcement does not publish one universal subscription price.

What early use suggests—and does not prove

A TechRadar hands-on report published September 14, 2026 found Muse useful for online tasks involving email, forms and shopping, while expressing discomfort about giving an agent access to a person’s digital life. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled reliability or security test. Results can differ by connector, account permissions and the type of task you delegate.

What Apple HomeView is

Apple announced HomeView on October 13, 2026. It combines a 7-inch Liquid Retina display with a speaker base and Siri AI powered by Apple Intelligence. Apple positions it as a fixed household interface for music, FaceTime, home monitoring, camera feeds, thermostats, lights, locks, blinds and hands-free automations.

A shared screen that becomes personal

HomeView can sit on a tabletop or be wall-mounted. Apple says it recognizes up to six people, giving each a personalized Home Screen and personal content while keeping that content private from other household users. Apple executive Greg Joswiak said the product is designed to be shared by everyone in the home while feeling personal to each user.

The Home Camera face can show up to nine video feeds at once. With a supported iCloud+ subscription and compatible cameras, Apple says HomeView can provide end-to-end encrypted recognition of people, familiar faces, pets, packages and vehicles through HomeKit Secure Video protections.

Home controls and Matter support

HomeView works with Apple Home Collection products made with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric, plus other Works with Apple Home and Matter accessories. Apple names cameras, thermostats, locks, lights and blinds as representative devices.

Matter support does not mean every Matter product will expose every feature automatically. Compatibility still depends on the specific accessory, its Apple Home support and the functions that manufacturer makes available. Check the individual device listing before treating a Matter label as a guarantee.

Price, launch date and mounting options

Apple lists a U.S. price of $299. Preorders opened October 13, 2026, and availability begins November 13, 2026. The product is initially offered in selected countries and is not sold in the European Union while Siri AI is unavailable in iOS there.

What has not been independently established

A TechRadar demonstration report highlighted the six-person personalization and Siri-centered interface, but the reviewer had not tested HomeView in a personal home. Independent evidence about long-term recognition accuracy, camera-feed reliability and household automations was therefore still limited before launch.

Which approach fits your home?

Choose Muse if you want work done in the background

  • You regularly lose time to email, forms, travel research, shopping or other multi-step online tasks.
  • You are comfortable reviewing permissions service by service and approving consequential actions.
  • You value an assistant that follows a task across connected accounts instead of a screen that mainly displays information.

Start with low-risk connectors and inspect the audit trail before allowing purchases, account changes or outbound messages. Disconnect a service when you no longer need it.

Choose HomeView if the household needs a visible control point

  • You want cameras, lights, locks, blinds or thermostat controls available without locating a phone.
  • Several people need separate content on one shared device.
  • You would use a permanent music, FaceTime and camera-monitoring station enough to justify another screen.

Budget for the mount if you do not want a tabletop installation, and verify that each planned accessory works through Apple Home or the relevant Matter implementation.

Keep using a phone when a shared screen adds little

A phone already handles calls, music, camera viewing and many home-control apps without a new $299 device or a permanent installation. HomeView makes sense when the always-visible interface, six-person personalization or camera dashboard changes how your household operates—not merely because it puts familiar apps on a larger surface.

Compare existing smart displays on the same question

An Echo Show or Nest Hub may already cover the basic “screen and speaker in a room” role. The meaningful comparison is the ecosystem you already use: connected accessories, account profiles, camera standards, voice assistant habits and privacy expectations. The available HomeView demonstrations do not establish that it is universally better than those alternatives.

The trust decision behind the two products

Muse asks for delegated authority. Even with confirmations and an audit log, an agent that can read accounts and carry out tasks introduces a new failure mode: it may misunderstand a request, encounter an unexpected page or use more access than you intended. Limit permissions, approve sensitive actions and treat each connector as a separate trust decision.

HomeView asks for household adoption. Its risk is less about an agent independently acting across the internet and more about whether everyone will accept another microphone, camera-facing interface and shared screen. Apple’s personalization and encryption claims are promising, but the product’s everyday behavior in real homes remained to be verified at the time of the launch demonstrations.

The practical choice

Buy into Muse when the outcome you want is completed digital work. Consider HomeView when the outcome is a shared, glanceable home dashboard. If neither need is strong, keeping your phone—and your current home controls—avoids both a new account-permission layer and a new household screen.
