Muse is positioned as a personal agent that can browse, connect to services, create content, and continue multi-step work. The right substitute depends on whether you need an assistant that merely answers and drafts, or one that can act through your accounts. Compare task execution, permissions, privacy controls, availability, and the total cost of the limits you will actually hit.
What makes Muse different from a regular AI chatbot?
Meta describes Muse as a personal AI agent rather than only a question-and-answer tool. Its product description covers answering questions, browsing, connecting to apps, creating content, and carrying out multi-step tasks. Muse can reportedly keep working in the background after you close the app, subject to permissions and approvals you set.

Meta says Muse can draft or send email, book travel, fill in forms, shop, remember preferences, and continue a longer goal. It is also described as requesting approval before sensitive actions such as sending an email or making a purchase. Those are Meta’s product claims, not the result of an independent security audit or hands-on benchmark.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The September launch announcement described a dedicated Muse Secure VM containing its browser and connected-app credentials. Meta also described a separate Sentinel agent that must approve internet access. This architecture is a useful comparison point: an alternative may offer powerful integrations without the same approval model, or may keep the user in the loop more often. Do not treat the VM or Sentinel description as proof that every possible failure or data leak is prevented.

Availability and price: establish the current baseline first
Availability and plan details are time-sensitive. The Associated Press reported at launch that Muse was for people aged 18 and over in the United States, through a separate app or WhatsApp. That is launch-period reporting, not a guarantee that access, age rules, countries, or channels are unchanged in October 2026.
Meta’s product page describes a free usage limit and a paid upgrade after the limit is reached. TechRadar reported on September 14, 2026 that the free offering was accompanied by a Power plan at $20 per month and a Maximum plan at $100 per month. Meta’s product page does not state those dollar amounts. Check the live plan screen before subscribing; names, limits, taxes, and availability can change.
| Item | What is established | What to verify before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Muse access | Launch reporting described U.S. access for adults 18+ through a standalone app or WhatsApp. | Supported countries, minimum age, channels, invitation or rollout status, and whether the same features work on every surface. |
| Free tier | Meta’s product page describes a usage limit and a paid upgrade when the limit is reached. | The cap, reset period, queue priority, model access, and treatment of agent actions versus ordinary chats. |
| Power | $20 per month was reported by TechRadar on September 14, 2026. | Whether the price is still current, what region and taxes apply, and the included limits. |
| Maximum | $100 per month was reported by TechRadar on September 14, 2026. | Whether the plan still exists, its allocation, and whether agent, media, and background work consume the same allowance. |
Use six axes to compare Muse with another app
1. Task completion, not just answer quality
Write down the outcome you need. “Explain this itinerary” is an information request; “find a flight, fill the traveler details, and stop before payment” is an agent workflow. Ask whether the alternative can only produce text and links, or can navigate services, enter data, wait for a result, and resume a multi-step goal.
- Answering: research, explanations, summaries, and calculations.
- Drafting: email, documents, plans, code, images, or other content that you submit yourself.
- Execution: opening services, filling forms, changing records, booking, purchasing, or sending messages.
- Persistence: continuing after the app closes, scheduling follow-up work, or remembering a preference.
A chatbot that writes an excellent travel plan is not functionally equivalent to an agent that can operate a booking site. Record these as separate capabilities rather than assigning one overall “smartness” score.
2. Connected services and approval boundaries
List every account an app can reach and what it can do there. Reading a calendar, creating an event, sending invitations, and cancelling meetings are four different permission levels. The same distinction applies to email, cloud files, shopping, payments, and social accounts.
For Muse, Meta says connected-app credentials are held in the Secure VM and that Sentinel approves internet access. Meta also says the user is asked to approve sensitive steps, including sending email or making a purchase. Confirm the exact prompt and the point at which control returns to you; a general statement that an app “asks permission” does not reveal whether it can prepare a transaction, select a shipping address, or submit the final order.
For any alternative, check whether permissions are one-time, persistent, read-only, write-enabled, or revocable. Look for a connection manager that shows active services and provides a disconnect or delete action. If an app cannot tell you which credential it used, treat that as a material usability and security weakness.

3. Privacy controls and data handling
Do not label an assistant simply “private.” Compare the controls that affect your actual data:
- Can you disconnect an integration without deleting the entire account?
- Can you review, edit, or delete saved memory and activity history?
- Is there a temporary or non-persistent conversation mode?
- Can you opt out of model training, and does the setting apply to agent actions, uploaded files, and connected-service data?
- How long are logs retained, and which vendors or account administrators can access them?
- Does a business or enterprise plan apply different retention and training rules from a personal plan?
Meta says Muse interactions do not feed its ad systems and that users can opt out of model training. Axios reported those controls and said a more ambitious confidential-VM option was still forthcoming at the time. Treat these as Meta’s stated design and reported controls, not independent verification. Open the current privacy and data-use screens in your account and confirm the setting before connecting sensitive services.
OpenAI’s official ChatGPT FAQ documents a Temporary Chat option. That is a concrete control to compare with Muse’s memory and activity settings, but it does not by itself establish that every ChatGPT feature or plan has identical retention behavior. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub is the primary place to check how Gemini processes activity and what controls are available. Policies and controls can differ by country, age, account type, and plan.
4. Access, geography, and rollout status
Check the country list, age requirement, sign-in method, and supported surfaces on the day you decide. An app might be available on the web but not in a messaging channel, or offer ordinary chat in a country while withholding agent actions. Distinguish a generally available feature from a preview, waitlist, or gradual rollout.
Muse’s launch was reported as U.S.-only for adults 18 and over. Recheck that status if you are elsewhere, travelling, or setting up an account for a younger user. Also verify whether the app, WhatsApp experience, and any browser surface share the same limits and integrations.
5. Price, limits, and the cost of failure
Compare the allowance that covers your workload, not the headline subscription number. A free plan with a small cap is not equivalent to a paid plan with a larger cap, and a “message” may consume a different amount from a browser action, file analysis, image generation, or background task.
Calculate a realistic month:
- Count ordinary conversations, file or image analyses, and media generations separately.
- Estimate how many agent runs you need and how many steps each run contains.
- Check whether background work continues to consume quota after you close the app.
- Record what happens at the limit: a hard stop, slower access, a model downgrade, or an upgrade prompt.
- Include taxes, currency conversion, cancellation terms, and any separate service fees charged by a connected provider.
Meta’s product page confirms a free usage limit. TechRadar reported the $20 Power and $100 Maximum figures on September 14, 2026. Do not assume either amount includes unlimited agent activity, media generation, or purchase support.

6. Keep media generation separate from agent work
An image or video model can be valuable without being able to manage your accounts. Meta announced Muse Image in July 2026 and previewed Muse Video; availability varies by surface and geography. Record those tools in a separate column from browsing, connected services, approvals, and persistent task execution. Otherwise a strong creative feature can make an app appear to be a suitable personal agent when it cannot complete the workflow you care about.
How ChatGPT fits as a Muse alternative
OpenAI’s official FAQ presents ChatGPT for brainstorming, writing, studying, planning, math, coding, image and file analysis, and web search. It groups access into Free, Plus/Pro, and Business/Enterprise offerings and explains Temporary Chat. This makes ChatGPT a plausible alternative for people whose work is primarily conversation, drafting, research, analysis, or file-based assistance.
OpenAI’s cited documentation does not establish that ChatGPT provides the same connected-service reach, background persistence, approval sequence, or purchase workflow described for Muse. Evaluate those capabilities directly in the current product and plan you can access. A capable answer-and-drafting assistant may be the better choice if you want to keep every external action manual; it is not a like-for-like replacement if your requirement is autonomous multi-step execution.
When assessing ChatGPT privacy, inspect the current data controls for your account type and use Temporary Chat where appropriate. Business and Enterprise administration can differ from personal settings, so do not transfer a control from one plan to another without checking its documentation.
How Gemini fits as a Muse alternative
Gemini is another comparison candidate, especially for readers already using Google services. The Gemini Apps Privacy Hub is the relevant primary source for current data-processing and activity controls. Check the exact integrations, permissions, retention choices, training options, and country availability shown for your account rather than inferring them from the Gemini name or from another Google product.

Choose by job, not by brand recognition
| Your priority | Questions to ask | What a good fit looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Research and writing | How good are web answers, citations, file analysis, editing, and long-context work? | A conversational assistant with clear limits and a workflow you are happy to supervise. |
| Hands-off errands | Can it navigate services, fill details, pause for approval, and resume safely? | An agent with explicit write permissions, visible checkpoints, and revocation controls. |
| Privacy-sensitive work | Can you disable training, delete memory, use temporary sessions, and disconnect accounts? | Documented controls that apply to your plan and region, with understandable activity history. |
| Creative production | Are image or video tools included, and are they available where you live? | A plan whose media allowance and licensing terms match your production volume. |
| Predictable spending | What is the cap, when does it reset, and what happens at the limit? | A published allowance that covers your normal month without surprise upgrades. |
| Family or workplace deployment | What are the age rules, administrator controls, and regional restrictions? | An account and plan designed for the users who will actually access it. |
A practical seven-step comparison method
- Define one real workflow. Use a task such as “prepare a trip and stop before payment,” “summarize three documents,” or “draft and schedule a meeting request.” Do not compare vague impressions.
- Separate read and write actions. Mark which steps only retrieve information and which can send, purchase, edit, delete, or publish.
- Check the account boundary. List the services, credentials, files, and personal details the app would need.
- Inspect approval prompts. Find the exact confirmation required before an external side effect. If documentation is unclear, assume you must supervise the action.
- Review privacy settings before importing data. Locate memory, history, training, temporary mode, export, deletion, and integration-disconnect controls.
- Price the month you expect. Use your estimated conversations, files, media, and agent runs; then check the overage or cutoff behavior.
- Record availability facts. Note country, age, device, channel, plan, and whether each feature is stable, preview, or rolling out.
Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing a draft with an action
An assistant that writes a purchase email has not sent it. An assistant that finds a hotel has not booked it. Label each result as recommendation, prepared action, approved action, or completed action.

Treating provider claims as an audit
Muse’s Secure VM, Sentinel approval layer, ad-system statement, and training opt-out are useful disclosures from Meta. They are not an independent penetration test, privacy certification, or guarantee against every implementation error. Apply the same standard to every provider.
Comparing prices without limits
A low monthly price can become expensive if your allowance is exhausted during a project. Capture the cap, reset date, model access, agent-action allowance, and behavior at the limit in the same note as the price.

Assuming one surface equals another
A feature in a standalone app may not be present in WhatsApp, a browser, or a workplace account. Verify the channel you will actually use.
Granting broad permissions for convenience
Connect the smallest set of services needed for the workflow. Prefer read-only access where possible, require confirmation for writes and purchases, and remove a connection when the task is finished.
Questions to verify before you subscribe
- Is the service available in my country and for my age group?
- Which actions can it perform without a new confirmation?
- Can I see, pause, or delete memory and activity?
- Does a temporary mode exclude the conversation from history and training, and under what plan?
- What happens to connected credentials when I disconnect an app?
- Are agent work, file analysis, image generation, and video generation counted separately?
- What is the exact cancellation, renewal, and currency policy?
Bottom line for selecting a Muse alternative
Choose Muse only if its current geography, price, limits, integrations, and approval prompts fit the actions you want it to take. Choose a conventional assistant such as ChatGPT when answering, drafting, studying, coding, analysis, and web search are the main jobs and you prefer to perform external actions yourself. Consider Gemini when its current integrations and privacy controls match the Google services and account rules you already use. In every case, verify the live plan and privacy pages on the same day, grant the least privilege necessary, and judge the product by a real workflow rather than by its marketing label.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was Muse available worldwide at launch?
No. Associated Press launch reporting described access for people aged 18 and over in the United States through a separate app or WhatsApp. Treat that as launch-period information and check the current country list and channels.

Does a temporary chat mean an assistant never retains any data?
Not necessarily. Temporary modes can have plan- and provider-specific retention rules. Read the current documentation for the account you use and avoid entering information that your policy forbids.
Should image and video generation decide which personal agent I choose?
Only if media creation is your primary job. Keep media availability and allowance separate from connected-service actions, approvals, privacy controls, and background task execution.
