Meta AI Studio is Meta’s platform for building custom artificial-intelligence experiences. Meta announced the platform in 2023, opened no-code AI-character creation to US users in 2024, and said on August 10, 2026 that people could no longer create new characters or edit existing ones; existing characters and chats were to remain active while being upgraded.

What is Meta AI Studio?

AI Studio is Meta’s system for creating and sharing custom AIs across its services. Meta originally described it as infrastructure for both programmers and non-coders, with planned uses including business customer-service AIs and creator-controlled AIs. The September 2023 announcement described plans, alpha testing and a forthcoming sandbox rather than a fully public release. Meta’s September 27, 2023 announcement provides that original scope.

Meta later turned part of that platform into a consumer-facing character builder. Its launch message described AI Studio as “a place for people to create, share and discover AIs to chat with – no tech skills required.”

When did Meta launch AI Studio?

Date Milestone What it meant
September 27, 2023 Platform announcement Meta introduced AI Studio as the foundation for company, business and creator AIs; broad outside access was presented as a plan.
July 29, 2024 Public character-creation rollout Meta began a US rollout of a no-code experience built with Llama 3.1, available through the AI Studio website and Instagram.
End of 2024 Expansion and reported adoption Meta said hundreds of thousands of AIs had been created and reported expansion to India, Pakistan, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Argentina and Chile.
August 10, 2026 Creation and editing ended Meta said users could no longer create new AI characters or edit existing ones. Existing characters and chats were to stay active and receive upgrades.

The 2024 rollout details are documented in Meta’s AI Studio announcement. The “hundreds of thousands” figure is a company-reported count of AIs created, not a count of people, active users or monthly users; Meta did not provide a more precise number. Its year-end account is available at Meta AI’s Llama update.

Can you still create AI characters in AI Studio?

Not according to Meta’s August 10, 2026 status update. New character creation and editing of existing characters in AI Studio were discontinued. Meta said existing characters and chats would remain active and be upgraded to its latest model infrastructure.

Meta has not published, in the cited update, a complete country-by-country eligibility list, a detailed migration timetable or the full set of requirements governing surviving characters. Therefore, an account that still displays an older character should not be taken as evidence that the creation tools have returned.

What could an AI Studio creator AI do?

During the 2024 rollout, Meta positioned creator AIs as extensions of a creator’s online presence. A creator could configure an AI to handle routine interactions rather than personally answer every message.

  • Answer common questions in Instagram direct messages.
  • Respond to Instagram Story replies.
  • Use selected Instagram content as grounding material.
  • Specify subjects the AI should avoid.
  • Provide links the AI could share.
  • Turn automatic replies on or off.
  • Choose which people were eligible to receive replies.
  • Show clear labeling that a response came from an AI.

These were controls and capabilities Meta described publicly; the cited announcements do not establish independent measures of response accuracy, reliability or safety.

Where could people share and use their characters?

Meta said characters created in the 2024 experience could be shared for discovery and chat across Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and the web. The initial public rollout began in the United States, followed by the additional markets Meta named in its 2024 year-end account. Availability could vary by account and country, and the 2026 update does not provide a replacement availability map.

What the timeline means for users

  • Existing character owner: Meta’s stated position is that the character and its chats remain active, but editing is no longer available through AI Studio.
  • Prospective creator: The former no-code creation flow is not currently available under Meta’s August 2026 update.
  • Researcher or business: The 2023 platform announcement concerned a broader direction for Meta’s AI infrastructure; it did not promise that every planned developer or business feature would be publicly released.
