Meta AI chief Alexandr Wang thanks Superintelligence Labs team after Muse launch

Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang published a lengthy thank-you note after Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) launched the Muse Wonder and Muse Spark AI models, praising the researchers and engineers who built them while warning that the lab’s work is only beginning. The Times of India reported the note on October 17, 2026.

Who Alexandr Wang was thanking

Wang’s message was addressed to the researchers, engineers and other contributors behind Meta Superintelligence Labs. He also credited people outside Meta who worked with the lab during the effort. The note describes a culture in which contributors focused on the shared objective rather than organizational boundaries: “Nobody asked whose job it was,” Wang wrote, according to The Times of India.

The appreciation followed the release of Muse Wonder and Muse Spark. The report identifies Muse Spark as open source, but it does not provide a complete technical specification, access instructions or a confirmed release classification for Muse Wonder. Those details should not be inferred from Wang’s note alone.

What the team set out to do

Wang said MSL and its team were formed a little more than a year before the note, with the goal of producing a frontier model in roughly a year. He called that target “incredibly audacious” and said many people told the team it would be impossible.

His description is intentionally broader than a single model launch. Wang said the team understood that success was unlikely but believed the attempt was worth making: “We knew it was unlikely, but still worth doing.” The timeline is qualitative rather than a published performance or delivery statistic; the report gives no benchmark results, model sizes or training-cost figures.

Why Wang said the lab avoided ordinary deadlines

Wang said the team adopted a principle of no deadlines. In context, that does not mean the project had no goals or milestones. It means the lab avoided arbitrary calendar pressure while solving several interdependent frontier-AI problems at once.

He listed work spanning:

  • pretraining and post-training;
  • reinforcement learning;
  • multimodal systems;
  • infrastructure;
  • safety and security;
  • data development; and
  • frontier research.

These areas can affect one another. A change in data or pretraining may alter post-training behavior; a new multimodal capability can require different infrastructure and safety testing. Wang’s point was that a fixed deadline could encourage teams to optimize for a date instead of resolving those technical and governance dependencies.

What Wang meant by “a machine that builds new models”

Wang presented MSL as a repeatable development system rather than a one-time release. “More than just the models we released this week, we have built a machine that builds new models,” he said in wording reproduced by The Times of India.

That phrase describes an organizational and technical process: expertise, infrastructure, research methods, data work, evaluation and safety practices that can be reused for future model generations. The report does not establish that the system is fully automated, nor does it publish a formal architecture for the process. It does establish Wang’s view that the lab’s lasting achievement is the ability to keep advancing at the frontier.

How Muse Wonder and Muse Spark fit the announcement

The Muse launch is the immediate event that prompted Wang’s note. Muse Wonder is named as one of the new models. Muse Spark is specifically described as open source, making it the clearest example in the report of a release intended to be shared beyond Meta’s internal systems.

The available account does not state:

  • the models’ parameter counts, training data or benchmark scores;
  • which interfaces, repositories or APIs provide access;
  • the exact capabilities of Muse Wonder compared with Muse Spark;
  • licensing terms for Muse Spark; or
  • the safety documentation accompanying either release.

Readers should therefore treat the launch as confirmed news about the models’ release, not as a complete technical comparison.

Why alignment and security were central to his praise

Wang singled out the researchers’ attention to alignment and security. Alignment concerns whether a model’s behavior follows intended goals and constraints; security covers efforts to prevent misuse, unauthorized access and other threats. His note links those responsibilities to the lab’s stated purpose: making people’s lives better.

That is a statement of intent, not evidence of a particular safety result. The report supplies no evaluation scores, incident record or independent audit. It does show that Wang framed safety and human benefit as part of the core research mission rather than as work added after capability development.

Why he said the work is not finished

Wang closed with the line: “i’m so grateful for every one of you, and our work is not done!” The wording explains why the note is both celebratory and forward-looking. Muse Wonder and Muse Spark mark a public milestone, but the larger objective—building a repeatable system for producing frontier models—requires continued research, training, evaluation and security work.

He also wrote, “I will remember this past year for the rest of my life,” and called the researchers “magicians.” Those comments emphasize the intensity of the roughly year-long effort, while his final sentence makes clear that the launch is a stage in an ongoing program rather than its conclusion.
