CD Eldense announced on 1 October 2026 that Lionel Messi had acquired the Spanish club and described him as its owner. The transaction was still awaiting authorization from Spain’s Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD), however, so the announcement does not establish that the purchase has received final regulatory approval.
What does Messi becoming Eldense owner mean?
The club says the acquisition begins a new phase built around long-term sporting, institutional and social development. It also says it wants to consolidate and grow in professional football while promoting its local roots, history and blue-and-red identity. These are Eldense’s stated aims; the announcement does not specify an investment plan or guarantee a sporting outcome.
EFE identifies Eldense as a LaLiga Hypermotion club. The club says it was founded in 1921. CD Eldense announced the acquisition on 1 October; EFE’s report also covered the news.
Has the CSD approved the purchase?
Approval was pending when Eldense made its announcement. The club stated: “La transacción se encuentra pendiente de la preceptiva autorización del CSD en los términos establecidos en la Ley del Deporte.” In English: “The transaction remains pending the required authorization of the CSD under the terms established in the Sports Law.” The available announcements do not establish whether authorization has since been granted, so the purchase should not be described as fully approved without a later confirmation.

What is known about the deal?
- Acquisition: Eldense says Messi acquired the club and calls him its owner.
- Regulatory status: CSD authorization was pending at the time of the 1 October 2026 announcement.
- Price and shareholding: Neither the club announcement nor EFE’s report states a purchase price or exact percentage of shares.
- Contract terms: The available announcements do not provide full transaction terms.
Accordingly, “majority owner” is not substantiated by the stated information: the club’s announcement calls Messi its owner but does not disclose his share percentage. The exact ownership structure remains unspecified.
What happens next?
The key outstanding point is the CSD decision required under Spain’s Sports Law. Until an official update confirms that authorization, the soundest reading is that Eldense announced Messi’s acquisition while the required approval remained pending. The club’s long-term project is an expression of its intentions, not evidence that particular plans have already been funded or implemented.
