Android’s underlying wording is “Not sent. Touch to try again.” The cause can be a missing network, an inactive or unsupported messaging service, an incorrect recipient, an MMS data or APN problem, an RCS group-state change, a blocked Premium SMS permission, or low device storage. The fastest fix is to identify what kind of message failed and whether the problem affects every recipient or only one.
Before tapping repeatedly, check the conversation and, if practical, ask the recipient whether the message arrived. Some users report that a message shown as unsent was delivered anyway; repeated taps can therefore create duplicates.

What the error actually tells you
The notification appears when Android cannot confirm a successful send. It does not identify the failed layer. A normal text may use SMS, a photo or many group messages may use MMS, and an internet-based chat may use RCS. Each service has different requirements.

Android has separate messages for network trouble, invalid recipients, an unactivated service and low storage. Seeing the generic “Not sent” text means you should troubleshoot the message path rather than assume one universal fault. There is no reliable published statistic showing how often this error occurs or which cause is most common.

Use the failure pattern to choose the right check
Start by classifying the failed send. This prevents changing settings that have nothing to do with the problem.
| What failed | Likely service | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Short text to several ordinary numbers | SMS, or RCS if the conversation supports it | Signal, airplane mode, SIM, default messaging app, carrier support and plan credit |
| Photo, video or other attachment | MMS or RCS | Mobile data, carrier MMS support and APN settings |
| One-to-one RCS chat | RCS | RCS connection status and whether you recently changed messaging apps |
| Group conversation that split or stopped sending | Group MMS or RCS | Group-messaging mode, mobile data and each participant’s RCS connectivity |
| Only one person fails | Any of SMS, MMS or RCS | Number, country code, contact record and block status |
| Bank, delivery or other service code | Short-code SMS | Premium SMS permission and whether the code accepts outbound messages |
Also note whether every conversation fails or only one message type. A text-only failure points toward basic SMS, app or carrier state; a photo-only failure points toward MMS data or APN configuration; a single-contact failure points toward the recipient record or number.

- Update the messaging app. Install the latest available version of Google Messages from your device’s app store. An outdated client can have trouble connecting to current messaging services.
- Make Google Messages the default texting app. In Android’s default-app settings, select Google Messages as the SMS app. Two apps competing to handle texts can leave messages in an unexpected state.
- Verify the SIM. Confirm that the SIM is inserted correctly and is recognized by the phone. If the phone shows no mobile service, messaging cannot use the carrier connection normally.
- Confirm carrier support. Check that your carrier and plan support the service you are trying to use: SMS for basic texts, MMS for media and many groups, and RCS where offered. Google’s guidance also says to verify your plan or credit balance.
- Check signal and airplane mode. Make sure the phone has usable cellular signal and that airplane mode is off. A device can remain connected to Wi‑Fi while lacking the mobile registration needed for SMS or MMS.
- Try one controlled resend. After the checks, tap the failed message once. If it still fails, do not keep tapping; continue with the branch that matches the message type.
If you use a different carrier, menu names and RCS availability can vary by region and plan. The carrier, not the message bubble alone, determines whether SMS, MMS or RCS is provisioned for your number.
Fix problems after switching from an iPhone or messaging app
Moved from iPhone
Deactivate iMessage for your phone number after moving to Android. If the number remains associated with iMessage, messages from some Apple devices can continue trying to use Apple’s service instead of reaching your Android SMS inbox. Complete the deactivation with the number that was previously used on the iPhone, then test with a new text.
Changed Android messaging apps
When you change messaging applications, RCS registration can remain tied to the previous app or become inconsistent. Google’s troubleshooting guidance says RCS may need to be turned off before messages arrive normally. Temporarily disable RCS, send a basic SMS test, and only then re-enable RCS if your current app and carrier support it.
If messages fail only for one contact
A contact-specific failure is different from a network-wide outage. Work through the recipient record before changing carrier settings.

- Verify the number. Compare the number in the contact with a number supplied by the person. Remove old digits, extensions or formatting that could point to a deactivated line.
- Add the country code when needed. For international contacts, store the full number with the appropriate country code. A locally formatted number may not route correctly when you or the recipient are outside the usual dialing region.
- Check blocks. Look in the phone and messaging app’s blocked-contact lists. A blocked recipient or a recipient who has blocked your number can prevent normal delivery.
- Delete and re-add the contact. Save the verified number as a fresh contact, start a new conversation and send a short text. This removes stale contact metadata from the conversation thread.
- Test outside the old thread. If a new conversation works, the original thread may contain an obsolete address or service state. Keep the new thread rather than repeatedly retrying the old one.
If messages to several other people work, do not assume the recipient’s phone is broken. The issue can be a wrong digit, a blocked entry, an unsupported destination or a country-code mismatch.
When photos or group messages will not send
Photos and other media: check mobile data and APN
MMS requires a mobile-data connection. Wi‑Fi alone may not satisfy the carrier’s MMS transport. Turn on mobile data, confirm that your plan permits MMS and retry with a small message.
If MMS still fails, reset the Access Point Name (APN) settings to the carrier defaults. On many Android phones this is under the mobile-network or SIM settings, although the exact labels differ by manufacturer. Record any custom APN values before resetting if you need them for another service. An incorrect APN can leave ordinary SMS working while every photo or MMS group fails.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose the group-messaging behavior you want
In Google Messages’ group-messaging settings, choose Group MMS when replies should remain in one shared conversation. Group MMS sends the message as a single group thread and requires the participating numbers and carrier service to support it.

Mass text sends an individual message to each recipient and creates separate conversations. It can be useful when you do not want a shared reply thread, but it will not behave like a conventional group chat. Select the mode deliberately instead of treating the setting as a repair for every failed group.
Understand an RCS group that suddenly splits
An RCS group can temporarily fall back or split into individual SMS or MMS conversations when one participant loses RCS connectivity. Google says the group usually returns to its RCS behavior when that device reconnects to RCS.
Look for a participant who has no data connection, has disabled RCS or is temporarily outside RCS coverage. Avoid deleting the entire group immediately. Send a simple test after connectivity returns; if the group remains split, use the group-messaging setting and mobile-data checks in the previous section.
Short codes need a different permission
A short code is a brief number used by services such as alerts, verification or account commands. Failure to send to one does not prove that ordinary SMS is broken. Possible causes include:

- The code accepts incoming messages but does not permit outbound replies from your carrier or account.
- Android has blocked Premium SMS access for the messaging app.
- The destination uses an alphanumeric short code, which Google Messages cannot send to.
When the service is legitimate and you expect a charge or paid-message capability, enable Premium SMS permission at Settings → Apps → Special app access → Premium SMS. Select the messaging app and allow the appropriate access. The exact wording can differ by Android version. Do not enable Premium SMS for an unknown service: the permission can allow billable messages.
If the destination is alphanumeric, changing the permission will not make it sendable through Google Messages. Use the service’s supported verification method or contact the carrier or service operator.
Retry without creating duplicate messages
A failed status is not always proof that the recipient saw nothing. User reports describe cases in which the recipient received a message even though the sender’s conversation still showed “Not sent.” Treat the first retry as a controlled test:
- Open the conversation and inspect whether a delivered or received reply appeared after the original attempt.
- If the message matters, contact the recipient through another channel and ask whether it arrived.
- Tap retry once only after checking. Wait for a clear sent or delivered state.
- If the app continues to show failure, copy the text so you do not lose it, then troubleshoot the relevant SMS, MMS, RCS, contact or short-code branch.
Repeated taps can send the same text multiple times when the network accepted an earlier attempt but the app did not receive confirmation. This is especially important for appointment changes, verification codes and group announcements.
Separate phone settings from carrier or service problems
Use the pattern of failures to decide where to escalate:
| Pattern | More likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Every message type fails to every recipient | SIM, signal, airplane mode, default app, account or carrier service | Complete the basic checks, then ask the carrier to verify SMS/MMS provisioning and account status |
| Only photos and group MMS fail | Mobile data, MMS support or APN | Enable mobile data and reset APN settings to default |
| Only one contact fails | Number, country code, contact or block state | Re-create the contact and test a new thread |
| Only RCS conversations fail | RCS registration or connectivity | Check RCS state, disable it temporarily after an app switch, and retest SMS |
| Only a service short code fails | Premium SMS policy or unsupported destination | Check Premium SMS permission and whether the code accepts outbound messages |
When contacting the carrier, describe the exact pattern, the message type, your approximate location, whether mobile data works and whether ordinary SMS succeeds. Ask specifically whether the account is provisioned for SMS, MMS and RCS rather than reporting only that “texts are broken.”
Quick Recap
What not to assume
- The notice does not prove that the recipient blocked you; blocking is only one possibility in a one-contact failure.
- A working Wi‑Fi connection does not guarantee that SMS or MMS can use the carrier network.
- A split RCS group is not necessarily permanent; it can reflect one participant’s temporary loss of RCS connectivity.
- Changing the APN will not fix an unsupported short code or an invalid phone number.
- There is no universal retry limit or single setting that repairs every instance of this message.
