Mesh Wi-Fi vs. One Router: What It Means for Your Power Bill

Often, yes: a mesh system with several powered nodes generally uses more electricity than a single router because each energized node adds to the system’s draw. The exact difference depends on the models, the number of nodes, and whether you compare idle, active, or maximum power. There is no reliable universal percentage for mesh versus router; the available lab figures compare node counts within five tested mesh systems, not every mesh system with a standalone router.

Why mesh systems can use more power

A single router is one powered device. A mesh system may have a main unit and one or more additional nodes, each drawing power while switched on. Adding nodes therefore generally increases total system consumption, though the amount varies by model and operating conditions.

In controlled idle testing of five mesh systems, a two-node setup drew 7.97–17.62 W in total, or 192.60%–197.91% of each system’s one-node idle draw. With three nodes, the systems drew 12.11–26.03 W, or 282.57%–300.16% of their one-node values. The average total power nearly tripled from one to three nodes. These are within-system comparisons from the California Lighting Technology Center/CalNEXT’s 2024 report, not a general mesh-to-router ratio. Read the report.

What published power figures do—and do not—tell you

Power figures are meaningful only when their measurement conditions and scope match. Idle draw is not the same as power during data traffic, and a device’s maximum rating is not a typical continuous-use estimate. Compare the total draw of all powered mesh units with the total draw of the router setup—not one mesh node with an entire router system.

  • Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
  • More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
  • Idle: TP-Link’s 2025 US energy table lists idle power of 2.86 W for the Archer A54 router and 12.10 W for each displayed Deco BE67 one-, two-, and three-pack row. The table describes idle power for each individual device; the pack rows should not be read as measured bundle totals. This manufacturer data is model-specific, not an independent household comparison. See TP-Link’s 2025 idle-power table.
  • Maximum: TP-Link lists 18.1 W maximum consumption without the power adapter for the Deco WB9600, described on its product page as a two-unit package. A maximum figure is not directly comparable with idle readings and does not predict typical continuous use. See the Deco WB9600 specifications.
  • Traffic and signal conditions: In the CalNEXT report’s specific traffic tests, consumption rose by an average of 44.3%; in attenuation testing, it rose by an average of 23.2%. These are test results, not forecasts for every home or network.

Estimate the annual electricity cost for your setup

Use the average power of the whole setup in watts, then apply your electricity price. For continuously powered equipment, the simplified conversion is:

Annual energy (kWh) = average watts × 8,760 ÷ 1,000

For a mesh setup, use the combined watts of all nodes that stay powered. If your only available figure is an idle value, call the result an idle-based estimate: it will not capture traffic, variation in device use, or your specific tariff. This calculation is an estimate, not a measured bill.

Choose the fewest nodes that still cover your home

Energy use is one factor, but coverage matters too. A single router that leaves rooms without a usable connection is not an equivalent replacement for a mesh system that solves the coverage problem. Start with the number of units needed for the coverage you want, then add nodes only if testing your home shows they are necessary. The report recommends a staged setup rather than deploying every node at once, to avoid unnecessary energy use.

The CalNEXT report identified 60 products from eight manufacturers for its market assessment, but it also calls for further field testing to understand how user behavior and home environments affect performance and energy use. Its controlled testing does not establish a representative annual bill difference for all households, or prove that every mesh setup uses more than every standalone router.
