If your mesh system still reports a wireless link after you connect Ethernet, check the problem in this order: compatibility, the wiring topology required by your operating mode, cable and port integrity, switch behavior, and the backhaul status shown in the vendor app. There is no universal mesh wiring diagram. A connection that is correct for one system can create a loop or remain invisible to another.
Start with a direct cable between the main unit and one satellite, then verify that the interface reports Ethernet. Only after that works should you add a switch or more nodes. The procedure below covers TP-Link Deco and EasyMesh examples and ASUS AiMesh guidance; use the exact port rules for your model.

What Ethernet backhaul should do
In a mesh network, backhaul is the connection each satellite uses to reach the main router and the internet. With wireless backhaul, that traffic shares radio airtime with your devices. With Ethernet backhaul, the nodes exchange traffic over a cable instead. A wired link can be more stable in buildings with thick walls or radio interference, but it only becomes active when the hardware, topology, cable path and software all accept it.

Check compatibility before changing anything
Both ends must support Ethernet backhaul in the mesh mode you are using. TP-Link states that an EasyMesh main router and satellite router must each support EasyMesh Ethernet backhaul; not every EasyMesh device does. A pair that can form a wireless EasyMesh network is not automatically capable of a wired one.
Find the exact model numbers and firmware notes for the main unit and every satellite. Do not infer support from a product family name. Also confirm that all units are on the same network and running the firmware required by the manufacturer.
Use the vendor’s intended initial setup
For Deco, TP-Link’s setup guidance says to add and configure all units wirelessly in the app first, then connect the Ethernet cables. Wired backhaul should activate automatically after the cable is attached. For a compatible, already configured EasyMesh pair, TP-Link instructs users to connect a LAN port on the main router to an Ethernet port on the satellite. When adding a new EasyMesh satellite, its guide requires factory mode; reset a previously configured satellite before following that path.

These are setup requirements, not universal rules for every brand. If your manufacturer specifies a different onboarding sequence, follow that sequence instead of assuming that plugging in a cable first will work.
Match the cable topology to the operating mode
Most failed backhaul installations are wired into the wrong part of the network. Identify whether the mesh is running as a router or as an access point before moving cables.
| System or mode | Documented connection pattern | Critical warning |
|---|---|---|
| TP-Link Deco, Router mode | Connect a satellite to a LAN port on the main Deco, either directly or through a switch connected to that LAN port. | Do not connect the satellite to the upstream modem or router in front of the main Deco; TP-Link says that creates a network loop. |
| TP-Link Deco, Access Point mode | A satellite can connect to any Deco or to the main router. | Do not apply the Router-mode diagram to an Access Point installation. |
| TP-Link EasyMesh routers | Connect the main router’s LAN port to an Ethernet port on the satellite. | Both routers must support Ethernet backhaul and the new satellite may need factory mode. |
| ASUS AiMesh, direct example | ASUS’s direct guidance uses the main router LAN port to the node WAN port. | Port assignments are product- and mode-specific; do not transpose this example to another system. |
| ASUS AiMesh with a managed switch | Use the port arrangement specified in ASUS’s router-mode or access-point-mode diagram. | Managed-switch VLAN and trunk settings can prevent the nodes from forming a wired path. |
When in doubt, disconnect every satellite except one and reproduce the manufacturer’s simplest supported diagram. A minimal, known-good path makes it easier to distinguish a topology error from a hardware fault.

Follow this troubleshooting sequence
1. Record the current state
Before changing settings, write down the mesh model, firmware version, operating mode, switch model, cable route and the icon or status shown for the satellite. Note whether clients lose internet access, whether only one node fails, and whether the problem began after adding a switch or changing modes. This record prevents a later reset from erasing useful clues.
2. Reduce the network to a direct cable
- Power on the main router and one satellite and wait until the wireless mesh is operational.
- Remove the switch and every intermediate patch panel from the test path.
- Connect one Ethernet cable directly between the ports required by your vendor’s diagram.
- Allow the nodes several minutes to renegotiate, then inspect the backhaul status in the app or router interface.
If the direct link becomes wired, the mesh units are probably compatible and the fault is in the former cable run, switch, wall jack or switch configuration. If it remains wireless, continue with the port, cable and compatibility checks rather than adding more equipment.
3. Try another cable and another port
A link light does not prove that the cable is suitable for mesh control traffic. Replace the cable with a known-good one and move each end to another supported port. Inspect plugs for bent contacts and make sure each connector clicks fully into place.
ASUS’s documented switch scenarios call for Cat5e-or-better RJ45 cabling. That does not mean every mesh installation requires a new cable, but it gives you a sensible minimum when the existing cable is damaged, unmarked or below the device’s stated specification.
On Deco, check whether IPTV is enabled. TP-Link says the selected IPTV port cannot also establish Ethernet backhaul. Move the cable to a different eligible Deco or switch port, or change the IPTV assignment according to the router’s settings.

Some systems accept a satellite on any Ethernet socket; others distinguish WAN and LAN roles or reserve a port for IPTV. Read the model-specific diagram and label the ports before reconnecting. For ASUS AiMesh, the direct example uses the main router LAN port and node WAN port. For Deco Router mode, use the main Deco LAN side and avoid the upstream modem/router path.

Do not assume that a port labeled WAN on one brand has the same mesh function on another. If a node has multiple sockets, test only the combinations the vendor documents.
5. Bypass and then inspect the switch
If direct wiring works but the switch path does not, reconnect the switch with only the main unit and one satellite attached. Keep other devices disconnected while testing.
TP-Link identifies several switch-related failure modes for Deco:
Recommended Free Tools
- Loop detection can block a port while Deco transitions from Wi‑Fi to Ethernet.
- Some switches may not forward the multicast packets required for discovery and control.
- Deco Ethernet backhaul uses IEEE 1905.1, so switch behavior affecting that traffic can stop the wired path even when ordinary internet traffic works.
For the loop-detection case described by TP-Link, disable loop detection temporarily and reboot the switch, then test again. Re-enable protections after you identify a compatible configuration; never leave a safety feature disabled without understanding the resulting loop risk.
ASUS’s managed-switch guidance adds different checks: verify VLAN membership on the node ports, make sure those ports are not configured as trunk ports when the guide calls for access ports, and select Ethernet as the connection priority where that setting is available. A switch that is transparent for a computer may still be wrong for the VLAN and control traffic used by the mesh.
6. Reconnect the production topology one element at a time
- Confirm that the direct main-to-satellite test reports Ethernet.
- Insert the intended wall jack or patch panel and check the status again.
- Add the switch, with the same two node cables, and check again.
- Reconnect additional satellites and clients one at a time.
The step at which the status changes identifies the section to inspect. Replace or reconfigure that element before making any other changes.

Confirm which backhaul is actually active
TP-Link Deco
Open the Deco app’s network map and select the satellite. The node details show the backhaul type. A wired result confirms that Ethernet is carrying the mesh link; a wireless result means the cable is not being used for backhaul, even if the satellite still has internet access.
TP-Link EasyMesh
Sign in to the main router, open the EasyMesh page and inspect the satellite entry. TP-Link uses an Ethernet icon to indicate a wired satellite. If the wireless icon remains, reseat the cable, test another cable and port, and repeat the direct-cable test.
ASUS AiMesh
AiMesh can select wired or wireless automatically. If you want a wired path to win whenever it is available, change the backhaul connection setting to give Ethernet priority, following the options shown for your firmware. A priority setting cannot create a link where the topology or switch configuration is invalid; use it only after the physical path is correct.
Understand mixed wired and wireless arrangements
You do not have to wire every node. TP-Link documents mixed Deco arrangements in which physically connected units use Ethernet backhaul while other satellites remain wireless. This is useful when only some rooms have network cabling.
Test each satellite separately. A wireless satellite in a mixed arrangement is not evidence that Ethernet backhaul is broken elsewhere. Conversely, a node that falls back to wireless after a cable is connected indicates that its own path, port or switch segment still needs attention.

Common symptoms and the next action
| What you see | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| Wireless icon after cabling | Confirm support, then connect the main unit directly to one satellite with a known-good cable and inspect the app status. |
| No connection from the satellite | Check Router-versus-Access-Point topology, port roles, cable seating and whether the satellite needs factory mode. |
| Works directly but fails through a switch | Inspect loop detection, multicast forwarding, IEEE 1905.1 handling, VLAN membership and trunk/access mode. |
| Only a Deco IPTV configuration fails | Verify that the selected IPTV port is not also being used for Ethernet backhaul. |
| Link is unstable during transition | Test with loop detection disabled temporarily, reboot the switch and check whether the wired status becomes stable. |
| Some nodes are wired and others are not | Check each node individually; mixed backhaul can be valid when only some units have Ethernet. |
When a switch is appropriate
A switch is justified when the cable route or room needs additional Ethernet ports, or when you have confirmed that the switch path works with your mesh. It should not be the first purchase or first troubleshooting step. Directly bypass it first so you know whether it is involved.

TP-Link lists the TL-SG108 among switches verified for Deco, but that verification is specific to the cited Deco guidance and should not be generalized to other mesh systems. For any switch, compare the vendor’s requirements for loop protection, multicast handling, VLANs and port roles with the switch’s available settings.
| Direct cable | Switch-based path |
|---|---|
| Fewer components and simpler fault isolation. | Supports multiple nodes or room devices from one cable run. |
| Best first test for proving compatibility. | Requires checking loop detection, VLANs, multicast behavior and port mode where applicable. |
| Uses one dedicated link between the tested units. | Adds another device, power supply and configuration point. |
Reset and escalation options
Reset only the unit that the manufacturer’s setup procedure says must be in factory mode. A reset erases configuration and can make diagnosis harder if you have not recorded the current settings.

Source-specific guidance and dates
The procedures in this guide reflect four manufacturer support documents: TP-Link’s US article Ethernet Backhaul for Deco: Setup, Benefits and Troubleshooting, updated April 17, 2026; TP-Link’s US article How to Build Ethernet Backhaul With Two TP-Link EasyMesh Routers, updated June 11, 2026; ASUS’s global article [AiMesh] How to set up ASUS AiMesh or ZenWiFi Mesh Ethernet backhaul under different conditions? (Advanced setup with network switch), updated April 9, 2026; and ASUS’s article [AiMesh] Can I set up wired connection between AiMesh routers (Ethernet backhaul)?, updated February 23, 2026.
Those documents do not establish a universal failure rate, throughput increase or percentage of incompatible switches. Any performance difference depends on the hardware, cabling and network environment, so this troubleshooting method uses status indicators and controlled topology tests instead of an assumed numeric improvement.
