Mercury is the smallest planet in the Solar System and the one with the smallest average distance from the Sun. It is a rocky world of cratered terrain, extreme temperature swings, and unusually long days. Here are the key facts—and the answers to common questions about its orbit, ice, moons, and exploration.

What is Mercury?

Mercury is the innermost of the Solar System’s eight planets. Its radius is about 2,440 km (1,516 miles), making it slightly larger than Earth’s Moon and a little more than one-third Earth’s width. NASA estimates it formed about 4.5 billion years ago.

Its surface is heavily cratered, much like the Moon’s. The Caloris Basin, one of its largest impact features, is about 1,550 km (960 miles) across. Long cliffs called scarps cross parts of the planet; they formed as Mercury’s interior cooled and the planet contracted.

How far is Mercury from the Sun?

Mercury’s average distance from the Sun is about 58 million km (36 million miles), or 0.4 astronomical units. Its orbit is elliptical rather than circular, so the distance varies: Mercury comes as close as about 47 million km (29 million miles) and moves as far as about 70 million km (43 million miles) from the Sun. “Closest planet” refers to its average distance.

How long is a day on Mercury?

The answer depends on what “day” means. Mercury rotates once on its axis in about 59 Earth days, but it takes 176 Earth days for the Sun to return to the same place in the sky—for example, from one sunrise to the next at a given location.

Measure Mercury’s period What it describes
Year 88 Earth days One orbit around the Sun
Rotation About 59 Earth days One turn on its axis
Solar day 176 Earth days One sunrise-to-sunrise cycle

Mercury’s slow rotation and rapid orbit create an unusual apparent motion of the Sun in some places: after rising, it can briefly set and then rise again.

Is Mercury the hottest planet?

No. Mercury can reach about 430°C (800°F) in daytime, but its nighttime surface can fall to about −180°C (−290°F). It has only a thin exosphere, not a substantial atmosphere that can retain heat and spread it around the planet.

Venus is the hottest planet. NASA gives Venus a mean surface temperature of 464°C (867°F); its dense atmosphere traps heat, keeping the planet hotter overall than Mercury.

What is Mercury made of?

Mercury has a large metallic core with a radius of about 2,074 km (1,289 miles)—roughly 85% of the planet’s radius. NASA says evidence indicates that part of the core is molten or liquid. The outer shell, consisting of mantle and crust, is about 400 km (250 miles) thick.

The planet’s magnetic field at the surface is about 1% as strong as Earth’s and interacts with the solar wind. Its exosphere is extremely thin; NASA lists oxygen, sodium, hydrogen, helium, and potassium among its main constituents.

Is there ice on Mercury?

Water ice may exist in deep craters near both poles, but the possibility applies to permanently shadowed regions. These locations receive little or no direct sunlight, unlike most of Mercury’s surface. The evidence does not mean the planet is broadly covered in ice.

Does Mercury have moons or rings?

No. NASA lists Mercury as having no known moons and no rings. Its axial tilt is about 2 degrees relative to its orbital plane, so the planet stays nearly upright as it orbits and does not have seasons in the way many planets do.

Could life exist on Mercury?

Mercury’s environment is not considered conducive to life as we know it. Its surface experiences extreme temperatures and intense solar radiation. This is a statement about known conditions, not a claim that every possibility has been tested.

How have spacecraft explored Mercury?

NASA’s Mariner 10 was the first spacecraft to visit Mercury. MESSENGER later flew past the planet three times, then orbited it for four years before its mission ended when it crashed into Mercury in April 2015. The joint European-Japanese BepiColombo spacecraft made its first Mercury flyby in October 2021; that milestone alone does not establish its current operational status or arrival schedule.
