What is the Mercedes-Benz S 450 e?
The S 450 e combines a six-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and a rechargeable battery. Mercedes describes the refreshed S-Class plug-in hybrid as EQ Hybrid technology. It can drive on electric power when conditions and battery charge allow, while retaining a petrol engine for longer journeys.

Mercedes’ refreshed S-Class announcement covers the S 450 e long saloon and describes an upgraded six-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. The manufacturer says system output increases by up to 55 kW over the previous engine generation; that is Mercedes’ comparison, not an independent measurement. Mercedes gives the refreshed S-Class plug-in hybrid an electric range of around 100 km. That is a manufacturer claim in the refreshed-model context, not a promise of the distance every driver will achieve. The available press material does not make this figure interchangeable with another market’s certified range test.

For the UK-market S 450 e, Mercedes-Benz’s brochure effective from August 2024 production lists 67–68 miles EAER (Equivalent All-Electric Range). EAER is the brochure’s stated measure; it should not be compared directly with a figure using a different market’s test procedure. Actual electric distance varies with conditions and use. How long does the S 450 e take to charge?
Mercedes-Benz UK’s brochure gives two charging times, each tied to a particular charger and charge window:

If sourcing a cable separately, check that its connector and current rating match the vehicle, wallbox and market; the brochure does not establish compatibility for every third-party cable. What makes it tech-forward—and what is not established?
The defensible technology distinction is its plug-in hybrid powertrain: a sizeable rechargeable battery and electric motor work alongside a six-cylinder petrol engine. This gives the S 450 e an electric-driving capability without making it a battery-only vehicle. The manufacturer characterizes the refreshed system as smoother and more responsive, but that description is Mercedes’ assessment rather than an independent road-test finding.
The cited materials do not establish a single global launch date, launch price, or market-specific first-delivery event for the S 450 e. The refreshed press material and the UK brochure also refer to different contexts, so their figures should remain attributed to their respective source and market rather than combined into one launch specification. No independent test data is available here to substantiate broader claims that it is the “ultimate” sedan.
