Mercedes-Benz is bringing Google Cloud’s Gemini-powered Automotive AI Agent to the MBUX Virtual Assistant, starting with the new CLA. The announced use is conversational navigation and place search: drivers can ask about destinations and nearby businesses, ask follow-up questions, and see navigation details in the vehicle’s native interface. Availability beyond the CLA and its launch markets is not fully established in the cited materials.
What the Google Cloud agent does in a Mercedes
Mercedes-Benz announced the expanded partnership with Google Cloud on January 13, 2025. The agent is built using Gemini on Vertex AI and adds conversational capabilities to the MBUX Virtual Assistant. For the Mercedes implementation, the stated focus is navigation and points of interest, using information from Google Maps Platform—not a general-purpose AI chatbot for every in-car task. Mercedes-Benz’s announcement describes the planned experience.

A driver might ask, “Could you guide me to the nearest fine-dining restaurant for a unique culinary experience?” Then they can ask whether the restaurant has good reviews or what the chef’s signature dish is. Mercedes says the assistant can respond to those follow-ups and retain conversational context, while showing navigation details through the native vehicle interface. These are the companies’ descriptions of intended capabilities, not independent test results.

The experience draws on Google Maps Platform information for place and navigation queries. In its January 2025 announcement, Mercedes-Benz Group AG reported that the platform covered 250 million places worldwide and received more than 100 million map updates per day. Those figures are attributed to the company’s announcement; they are not independently audited measurements.

The practical distinction is that Gemini supports a more natural, multi-turn way to ask about places, while Google Maps Platform supplies the location information described in the announcement. Mercedes has not published independent evidence in the cited materials establishing the assistant’s real-world accuracy, response speed, or safety performance.
Which Mercedes vehicles get it?
Mercedes named the new CLA as the first vehicle for the feature and initially said it would arrive with the CLA later in 2025. Mercedes-Benz USA’s July 16, 2025 CLA announcement describes the integration. The available official materials do not establish a complete current list of eligible model years, countries, or vehicle configurations. Check market-specific vehicle information or owner documentation for availability in a particular car.

What the broader Google Cloud platform claims—and what that means here
Google Cloud describes its Automotive AI Agent platform as multimodal, multilingual, customizable, and designed to integrate with vehicle architectures, Android Automotive OS, and Google built-in applications. Its broader product description also discusses conversational engagement across navigation, search, media, communication, and vehicle controls. These are platform-level capabilities; they do not establish that every capability is part of Mercedes-Benz’s implementation. Google Cloud’s product page describes the wider platform.

What has not been established
The cited company materials explain the intended product and its announced capabilities, but do not establish independent real-world accuracy, safety outcomes, customer satisfaction, or privacy and data-retention terms. They also do not provide a complete current rollout list or establish feature pricing or a separate subscription. The January 2025 expectation of arrival later that year was a launch projection, not confirmation of availability in every market today.

This is an automaker-integrated feature, not a standalone consumer app documented for installation in other vehicles. Although Google Cloud’s agent platform is designed for automakers, the Mercedes announcement concerns its integration into MBUX.
