Memory Supply Could Tighten Through 2028, Micron Says

Micron forecasts tighter memory and storage supply-demand conditions in calendar 2027 and 2028, while warning that new fabs take time to ramp.

Micron expects memory and storage supply-demand conditions to be much tighter in calendar 2027 and 2028 than in 2026. That is the company’s forecast—not a guarantee that every memory type, supplier or buyer will face the same shortage. Micron also says it cannot yet see when supply will catch up with demand.

What Micron forecasts—and what it does not

On its fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 earnings call, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said: “We expect memory and storage supply-demand conditions to be much tighter in calendar 2027 and 2028 than they were in 2026.” The statement compares calendar years, even though it was made during a fiscal-quarter call. Micron’s earnings-call transcript is the primary source for the company’s outlook.

The forecast describes tighter conditions; it does not quantify a global shortfall or give a date when the market will rebalance. CIO reported Mehrotra saying, “We do not have line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance.” That leaves the timing of any eventual balance unknown. CIO’s October 1, 2026 report also gives context on customer commitments and price figures.

Why Micron expects tighter conditions

Micron attributes stronger demand to the growing memory capacity and performance requirements of AI workloads, including larger models, longer context and greater concurrency. The company also emphasizes memory’s role across customer platforms and the value of multiyear strategic customer agreements. These are Micron’s explanations for its outlook, not an independent forecast of demand across every market segment. Micron’s call transcript presents the company’s reasoning.

Why new fabs will not ease supply immediately

Micron described manufacturing projects in the United States and elsewhere, including Japan, Taiwan and Singapore. Its stated timelines for three U.S. projects are:

Project Micron’s stated initial wafer-output timing
Idaho ID1 Mid-calendar 2027
Idaho ID2 Late calendar 2028
New York fab Calendar 2030

These are company timelines for initial wafer output, not dates when each facility will operate at full capacity. Micron said new DRAM and NAND fabs ramp gradually, with production becoming more meaningful a few quarters after initial output. Construction and first wafers therefore do not translate immediately into large volumes of saleable memory. Micron’s transcript contains the company’s project outlook and ramp caveat.

Micron announced on July 9, 2026, that it planned to invest more than $250 billion in the United States through 2035. That is a planned investment figure, not capacity already built or chips already reaching customers. Micron’s announcement describes the plan.

What the reported commitments and price figures mean

CIO reported that Micron had committed more than 75% of its 2027 output and that most current customer discussions concerned 2028. The commitment figure applies to Micron’s own output, not the entire global memory supply. It indicates that much of the company’s production was spoken for; it does not measure the size of the industry-wide shortage. CIO’s report attributes the figures to Micron’s CEO.

Price figures in the same coverage refer to different measures and periods. They should not be treated as a single forecast for what consumers will pay:

Figure Measure and period Scope
DRAM prices rose by a percentage in the high teens Micron’s realized prices in its fiscal fourth quarter of 2026; reported by CIO from CFO Mark Murphy Micron, historical result
NAND prices climbed about 30% Micron’s realized prices in its fiscal fourth quarter of 2026; reported by CIO from CFO Mark Murphy Micron, historical result
Conventional DRAM contract prices forecast to rise 10%–15% quarter over quarter TrendForce forecast for calendar fourth-quarter 2026, dated September 30, 2026 Market contract-price estimate
NAND flash contract prices forecast to rise 15%–20% TrendForce forecast for calendar fourth-quarter 2026, dated September 30, 2026 Market contract-price estimate
Average PC selling prices forecast to rise 17% IDC forecast for 2026, dated June 2026 PCs overall, not RAM kits alone

The Micron figures are historical company price changes; the TrendForce figures are forecasts for contract prices. IDC’s figure concerns average PC selling prices. None is a guaranteed retail price increase for consumer RAM. CIO’s report covers these distinct figures.

What this could mean for PC buyers

Reporting has connected constrained memory supply with consumer-device costs and PC configurations that include less memory. But the cited figures do not establish a precise path for consumer RAM-kit prices through 2028, and enterprise or contract-market changes need not pass through to retail prices in the same way. Ars Technica’s coverage discusses consumer effects.

If you are considering a desktop DDR5 RAM kit, check your system or motherboard documentation before buying. Confirm the supported memory type, platform generation, capacity and configuration; a kit is not suitable for every PC. Compatibility guidance is available from the PC memory reference. A purchase now is not a guarantee of savings.
