Mellum2.1 is the clearer fit when you need a documented, self-hosted model for repository-level agents that edit files, run shell commands and iterate on tests. “DeepSeek-Coder” requires more care: the name covers several open checkpoints from 1B to 33B, and the API identifier has changed over time. Choose only after naming the exact checkpoint or API version and testing it in your own agent harness.
Start with the workflow, not the leaderboard
A coding agent does more than autocomplete a line. It must inspect a repository, decide which files matter, call tools with valid arguments, apply an edit, run commands, interpret compiler or test failures, and continue until the task is complete. A model that is excellent at fill-in-the-blank completion can still fail at this longer control loop.

Mellum2.1 and the DeepSeek-Coder family are therefore not interchangeable labels. Mellum2.1 Thinking is presented by JetBrains as a reasoning model for complex agentic work. DeepSeek-Coder is a series whose original documentation emphasizes project-level code completion and infilling. Their published benchmark numbers were not produced in a single, independently verified, same-harness comparison, so separate scores cannot establish that one beats the other.
- Pick Mellum2.1 first when repository agents, shell and file tools, long context, Apache 2.0 licensing and private deployment are central requirements.
- Investigate a named DeepSeek-Coder checkpoint when you primarily need completion or infilling, want to select among multiple parameter sizes, or already have a DeepSeek-based stack.
- Use a controlled bake-off when the decision is consequential. Keep the checkpoint, prompt, tools, context, sampling and scoring identical.
What exactly are you comparing?
Mellum2.1 Thinking
JetBrains describes Mellum2.1 Thinking as the next version of Mellum2 Thinking. Its model card lists a 12-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts architecture with 2.5 billion active parameters, 28 layers, 64 experts and eight activated experts. It uses bfloat16 precision, supports a 131,072-token context window and is released under the Apache 2.0 license. These specifications are from the JetBrains model card retrieved in 2026 and should be checked again when you deploy a later revision.

The model card’s intended use is unusually explicit: “Mellum2.1 is a thinking model. Use it for complex agentic tasks, such as working in a repository, running commands, and calling tools, and for hard non-agentic problems in coding, math, and reasoning.” That is a vendor statement about design intent, not proof that every agent framework will obtain the same behavior.
The DeepSeek-Coder family
The official DeepSeek-Coder repository documents a family rather than one fixed model. Listed sizes range from 1B to 33B. The series was trained on code and natural language, uses a 16K context window in the README’s description, and supports project-level completion and fill-in-the-blank infilling. A 1B checkpoint and a 33B checkpoint can have very different latency, memory and quality characteristics; calling both simply “DeepSeek-Coder” hides the decision you actually need to make.
There is a second identity problem for API users. DeepSeek’s API changelog records that the deepseek-coder identifier was upgraded to DeepSeek-Coder-V2-0614 and later says DeepSeek-Coder and DeepSeek-Chat were upgraded to DeepSeek V2.5 for backward compatibility. An API alias therefore should not be treated as a permanently frozen model. Verify the live API documentation, model revision and retirement policy before comparing an API result with a local checkpoint.
Specification snapshot
| Characteristic | Mellum2.1 Thinking | DeepSeek-Coder family |
|---|---|---|
| Model identity | One JetBrains model release, described as the next Mellum2 Thinking version | A series of checkpoints; API alias history is separate from the repository family |
| Architecture or size information | 12B total parameters; 2.5B active parameters; mixture of experts; 28 layers; 64 experts; eight activated experts | Repository lists sizes from 1B to 33B |
| Context documented in the cited material | 131,072 tokens | 16K tokens in the family README |
| Primary documented task shape | Repository work, command execution, tool calls and difficult coding or reasoning tasks | Project-level code completion and infilling, alongside code and natural-language generation |
| Precision or license stated in the cited material | bfloat16; Apache 2.0 | The cited family summary does not provide one single precision or license value that applies to every checkpoint |
| Serving documentation | Transformers, vLLM and SGLang examples; vLLM includes a tool-calling configuration | Repository documentation covers the family and usage, but the exact serving path depends on the selected checkpoint or API |
Context length is not the same as usable agent memory. Your framework must reserve room for tool schemas, command output, patches, test logs and the model’s next response. A 131K limit gives Mellum2.1 more documented headroom than the 16K figure in the DeepSeek-Coder README, but an oversized prompt can still crowd out the information needed for a correct fix.

What the published benchmark numbers do—and do not—show
JetBrains reports the following Mellum2.1 Thinking results in 2026 model-card material:
| Benchmark | Reported score | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| LiveCodeBench v6 | 82.0% | JetBrains-reported, non-agentic evaluation |
| HumanEval+ | 91.5% | JetBrains-reported, non-agentic evaluation |
| MBPP+ | 79.4% | JetBrains-reported, non-agentic evaluation |
| SWE-bench Verified | 47.0% | JetBrains-reported agentic evaluation |
| Terminal-Bench 2.1 | 17.4% | JetBrains-reported agentic evaluation |
| SWE-bench Pro | 28.0% | JetBrains-reported agentic evaluation |
JetBrains says its pipeline used greedy decoding for non-agentic benchmarks. For agentic benchmarks it describes the open-source Pi v0.73.1 harness with shell and file tools, a 114K context, up to 16K tokens per turn and Mellum2.1’s default temperature of 1.0. Those details matter: changing the harness, context budget, temperature, tool descriptions or retry policy can change the result.
The DeepSeek-Coder README contains historical pass@1 results for HumanEval, multilingual HumanEval, MBPP and DS-1000 for named variants. They are useful as historical information about those variants, but they are not a matching Mellum2.1 run. They use different model generations and evaluation setups, so placing the figures in one ranking would create false precision.
How to choose by coding-agent task
Repository diagnosis and multi-file fixes
For an issue that spans configuration, source files and tests, Mellum2.1 has the stronger documented fit. JetBrains says it was trained for agentic work in real software repositories, using shell and file-editing tools with reward tied to tests passing. This is the publisher’s account of the training process, not independent verification, but it aligns directly with the workflow.

A DeepSeek-Coder checkpoint may still solve the task, especially if your prompts and orchestration already compensate for tool use. You must test the selected size rather than infer behavior from the family name or from a different API alias.
Inline completion and infilling
DeepSeek-Coder’s documented fill-in-the-blank objective is directly relevant to editor completion and inserting code between existing sections. For this use, a smaller checkpoint can be attractive if your latency and throughput constraints favor it. Mellum2.1 may also generate code well—the reported HumanEval+ and MBPP+ scores are strong—but those benchmarks do not by themselves measure keystroke-level latency, editor integration or infilling quality.
Long repository context
The documented context figures favor Mellum2.1 on paper: 131,072 tokens versus 16K in the DeepSeek-Coder family README. Use the larger window for repository maps, issue history, test output and relevant files, while still trimming duplicate or stale content. Confirm the actual context limit of the exact runtime and quantized build you deploy.

Private, self-hosted operation
Mellum2.1’s Apache 2.0 license and JetBrains’ documented Transformers, vLLM and SGLang paths make it straightforward to evaluate in a private serving environment. The DeepSeek choice depends on the precise checkpoint’s license and runtime support; do not assume every family member has identical terms.

Hosted API integration
If you call an API using deepseek-coder, record the date and the provider’s resolved model revision. The changelog shows that this identifier has been upgraded more than once. An apparently unchanged application can therefore be comparing different underlying models over time. For a controlled experiment, prefer an immutable model version where the provider offers one.
Deployment and tool-use checklist
Mellum2.1 serving options
The JetBrains model card provides loading and serving examples for Transformers, vLLM and SGLang. It also documents a vLLM tool-calling configuration. Because flags, template names and supported versions can change, use the current model card’s exact example rather than copying an older command from a third-party post.
- Choose the exact Mellum2.1 checkpoint and confirm its revision, precision and license.
- Start with the documented Transformers path to validate tokenization, prompt formatting and basic generation.
- Move to vLLM or SGLang when you need a long-running service, batching or concurrent agent sessions; apply the model card’s tool-calling configuration.
- Send a minimal tool call, inspect the emitted function name and arguments, then run a harmless command before granting write access.
- Measure end-to-end task completion, not only generated-token speed: include tool latency, test execution and retries.
JetBrains’ October 2026 post said GGUF builds for llama.cpp, Ollama and LM Studio, plus an MTP head for speculative decoding, were coming soon. Treat those formats as availability claims that can change; verify that the build you want actually exists before designing around it.

- Name the exact repository checkpoint, size and revision, or document the API model identifier and date.
- Confirm the checkpoint’s context limit, prompt template, license and supported runtime.
- For completion or infilling, test the repository’s documented formatting objective rather than using an agent prompt unchanged.
- For agent use, define a strict tool schema and test malformed arguments, truncated output, command failures and repeated calls.
- Pin the model revision in your deployment records so an alias upgrade cannot silently invalidate your evaluation.
Build a fair local evaluation
A useful comparison controls every variable that can otherwise masquerade as model quality. Create a task set from your own repositories, with permission to run the code in an isolated environment.
Best Value
- Stratify tasks. Include single-function completion, infilling, bug diagnosis, multi-file changes, dependency updates, test repair and command-line investigation.
- Freeze identities. Record the Mellum2.1 revision and the exact DeepSeek-Coder checkpoint or resolved API model and date.
- Use one harness. Keep the same system prompt, tool schema, repository checkout, sandbox permissions, context policy and maximum turns.
- Define success before running. Require tests to pass, prohibit forbidden file or network access, and decide how partial fixes are scored.
- Repeat stochastic runs. If temperature is above zero, run enough trials to report a pass rate rather than one lucky completion. Keep sampling settings identical.
- Log the whole trace. Save tool calls, arguments, command output, patches, retries, token usage and wall-clock time.
- Review failure modes. Separate wrong code from a valid fix blocked by a tool-format error, timeout, context overflow or environment problem.
For a compact first pass, use 20 to 40 tasks balanced across the categories above, then expand the suite around the failures that matter to your team. Do not convert that internal sample into a public benchmark score; it is a decision aid for your workload.
Operational trade-offs that the published material cannot settle
- Latency and throughput: active-parameter counts, batching, quantization and hardware all affect performance. The cited material does not establish matched speed measurements.
- Memory and hardware: do not infer a minimum GPU configuration from parameter count alone. Precision, framework overhead, KV-cache size, concurrency and context length change the requirement.
- Serving cost: no matched price data was provided for these alternatives. Calculate cost from your chosen host, utilization, context and retry rate.
- Privacy: self-hosting can keep source code inside your environment, but logs, telemetry and tool outputs still need policy controls. Hosted APIs require a separate data-processing review.
- License compliance: Mellum2.1 is listed as Apache 2.0. Check the exact DeepSeek-Coder checkpoint’s license and any provider terms before redistribution or commercial deployment.
Common mistakes and fixes
Treating DeepSeek-Coder as one model
Symptom: an evaluation names only “DeepSeek-Coder.” Fix: record the checkpoint size and revision, or the API model resolved on the test date.
Comparing unrelated benchmark tables
Symptom: a historical DeepSeek-Coder pass@1 number is placed beside a JetBrains agent score and declared a winner. Fix: rerun both exact models with the same tasks, harness, sampling and scoring.
Assuming tool support means reliable tool use
Symptom: the model emits plausible function names but invalid arguments or stops after the first failing command. Fix: test schema adherence, error recovery, retries and completion of the full test loop.
Using the entire context window by default
Symptom: the agent loses the issue’s key detail in a mass of logs and files. Fix: retrieve relevant files, summarize repeated output and reserve tokens for tool results and the next action.
Designing around forthcoming formats
Symptom: a deployment depends on a GGUF or speculative-decoding artifact that is not yet available for the chosen revision. Fix: verify current format availability and keep a documented fallback runtime.
A practical decision rule
| Your priority | Starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Repository agent with shell, file edits and test loops | Mellum2.1 Thinking | Its published purpose, long context and tool-serving documentation match the workflow |
| Editor completion or infilling | A named DeepSeek-Coder checkpoint | The family explicitly documents completion and fill-in-the-blank use; select size by measured quality and latency |
| Private deployment under a permissive license | Mellum2.1, subject to your compliance review | JetBrains lists Apache 2.0 and self-hosting paths |
| Existing application using a DeepSeek API alias | Keep the integration only after pinning the resolved version | The deepseek-coder identifier has changed over time |
| High-stakes model replacement | Run both in one harness | Published figures do not provide a date-matched head-to-head |
If your primary job is an autonomous repository change, begin with Mellum2.1 and validate it against your failure budget. If your primary job is completion or infilling, shortlist the DeepSeek-Coder sizes that meet your latency target and test them on representative files. In either case, the final choice should come from your trace-level evaluation, not from a cross-generation leaderboard comparison.
