There is no universal melee-combat rule. A combo may be a weapon-specific attack string, stamina may be an action budget, and a parry may work only against selected attacks. Elden Ring and Sekiro demonstrate the difference clearly: Elden Ring ties stamina, weapon movesets and stance damage together, while Sekiro makes posture and equipped Combat Arts central to its own system.
The reliable way to improve is to learn the rules of the particular game: identify which actions spend a resource, map one weapon or move at a time, read enemy attack tells, and test whether the attack you want to parry is actually eligible.

What “combos,” stamina and parries mean in a game
Players use the word combo for several different things. It can mean a sequence of normal attacks that link automatically, a route that combines movement and attacks, or a special move inserted into an ordinary string. The game’s weapon, input and animation rules determine which interpretation applies.

A parry is a timed defensive action that can interrupt or repel an eligible attack. A successful parry may produce an opening, but it does not guarantee that every enemy can be parried or that one successful parry will break an enemy’s stance. The exact timing, attack categories and rewards belong to the individual game.
| System | Question to ask | Why the answer matters |
|---|---|---|
| Combo | Which inputs and movement states select the next attack? | The same weapon may have different normal, heavy, running, jumping, rolling, backstep and crouch attacks. |
| Resource | What does the bar or charge actually restrict? | Spending it on offense can remove the option to defend or reposition, but only in games that attach those costs. |
| Parry | Which enemy attacks can be repelled, and what follows? | A parry may create a critical-hit chance, a posture advantage or no opening at all. |
| Opening | How is the opponent made vulnerable? | Games can use timed deflection, accumulated stance damage, posture pressure, recovery animations or a designed combo route. |
Elden Ring: stamina is an action budget
Bandai Namco’s ELDEN RING Starter Guide: Tips to know before playing the game (11 October 2021) describes a stamina gauge that regenerates over time. When the gauge reaches zero, you cannot perform further actions that consume stamina. The guide also states that stamina is not consumed while you are out of combat.
That definition is narrower and more useful than saying “stamina controls everything.” It tells you to watch the game’s gauge and identify the actions that draw from it. The official combat guide gives running and jumping as examples of stamina-consuming actions. It does not establish a universal cost for every attack in every situation, so do not transfer a number or timing assumption from one weapon, enemy or game to another.
Planning around the bar
In practice, leave enough stamina for the defensive action you expect to need. If you empty the gauge on a long attack sequence and the opponent immediately retaliates, the relevant problem is not that stamina is “bad”; it is that your action budget was committed before the exchange was finished. This is a planning principle, not a rule that applies to games without a stamina system.

The combat guide also notes two useful interactions: a jump can avoid some attacks, and jumping attacks can inflict more stance damage. Those options compete with other uses of stamina, so learn their cost and benefit in the current encounter rather than assuming that jumping is always the best defense.
Elden Ring: combos come from the weapon and the input
Elden Ring’s normal attack chain is weapon-specific. Bandai Namco’s combat guide says that repeated normal attacks commonly produce a basic pattern of three to five attacks, while heavy attacks may contain one or two attacks depending on the weapon type. “Three to five” is therefore a description of common patterns in this game, not a universal definition of a combo.
Movement changes the move selected
The same attack button can call a different animation when your character is running, jumping, rolling, backstepping or crouching. A weapon’s moveset is consequently a collection of branches rather than one fixed string. Learn each branch separately:
Recommended Free Tools
- Standing normal attacks for the basic repeatable sequence.
- Heavy attacks, including their one- or two-hit patterns.
- Running attacks for closing distance or punishing recovery.
- Jumping attacks, which can contribute significant stance damage.
- Rolling, backstep and crouch attacks, which change the timing and reach of an exchange.
The combat guide also discusses input buffering and action commitment. An input may be accepted before the current animation finishes, while the committed animation can still leave you unable to cancel immediately. That is why mashing a longer string can produce an attack you no longer want. Practice the point at which the game accepts the next input, then stop entering attacks when you need to preserve an escape or guard option.

A practical moveset drill
- Choose one weapon and test its standing normal chain without an enemy nearby.
- Repeat the same chain while moving, then test running, jumping, rolling, backstep and crouch attacks.
- Record which attacks reach farthest, recover fastest and appear to add the most stance pressure.
- In a low-risk encounter, use one branch at a time so you can identify its range and recovery.
- Only then combine branches into a route suited to the enemy’s distance and opening.
Elden Ring: what a parry does—and what it cannot do
In Elden Ring, the starter guide instructs you to equip a shield with the Parry skill and use the skill input to repel enemy melee attacks. A successful parry can create an opportunity for a critical hit. The setup is therefore more specific than “press block at the right time”: the shield must have the relevant skill, and the incoming attack must be one the game allows you to parry.
The guide gives an important warning in plain language: “Some enemies won’t have their stance broken with a single parry.” The advanced guidance also says that some enemies cannot be parried at all. A failed attempt can therefore mean incorrect timing, an ineligible attack, an enemy that requires multiple successful parries, or a situation where the parry connected but did not produce the expected stance result.
How openings are created
The combat guide describes two related routes to a critical opening. A successful parry can leave many enemies exposed, while some bosses may require several successful parries. Separately, accumulated stance damage can break an enemy’s stance and expose it to a critical attack. Guard counters and charged or jumping heavy attacks can contribute to that stance damage.

A parry is a timed defensive skill; stance damage is accumulated pressure; a critical attack is the reward when the game exposes the relevant target. A heavy attack can help break stance without being a parry, and a parry can be successful without immediately breaking a boss’s stance.

Why there is no universal parry timing
The available official explanations describe the mechanic broadly, not as a frame-by-frame timing chart or a complete enemy-by-enemy eligibility list. Attack tells, animation phases, shield skills and enemy classes differ. Learn the visual or audio tell for the specific attack, test the move repeatedly, and verify the result against that enemy rather than importing a timing window from another title or weapon.
Parry, stance break and posture are not synonyms
| Term | Meaning in the examples here | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| Parry | A timed skill that can repel an eligible attack and may expose an enemy. | It is not a guarantee against every attack or enemy. |
| Stance damage | Pressure accumulated through attacks and other actions until an enemy’s stance breaks. | It is not identical to the act of parrying. |
| Critical opening | A state in which the game permits a powerful critical attack. | It is not necessarily produced by one parry. |
| Posture | Sekiro’s central pressure system, in which combat progress is tied to the opponent’s posture state. | It is not simply Elden Ring’s stamina bar under another name. |
FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki told PlayStation.Blog on 28 January 2022 that Elden Ring’s stance-break mechanic is similar to Sekiro’s posture system. “Similar” does not mean identical: the two games use different controls, resources and combat loops.

Activision’s official Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Game Mechanics guide (22 March 2019) emphasizes posture and describes Combat Arts as greater attack moves that can augment combos. Combat Arts must be equipped, and some consume Spirit Emblems when used.
This creates a different kind of combo decision from Elden Ring’s ordinary weapon chain. In Elden Ring, changing movement or attack weight selects another part of a weapon’s moveset. In Sekiro, an equipped Combat Art adds a special route subject to its own availability and Spirit Emblem cost. The presence of a special move does not prove that the game shares Elden Ring’s stamina economy; the official guide’s resource emphasis is different.

When comparing the two systems, ask whether you are managing stamina, posture, Spirit Emblems or another resource. A similar-looking opening can have a different cause and a different reward in each game.
A method for learning any melee system
- Read the local rules. Check the in-game tutorial, HUD labels and move descriptions. Write down which actions consume stamina, posture-related pressure or special charges.
- Map one weapon or character at a time. Test standing, heavy, movement and special attacks without changing equipment between attempts.
- Separate offense from defense. Identify whether the game rewards a parry, sustained guard, dodge, movement, deflection or some combination.
- Study attack tells. Watch the opponent’s wind-up, sound cue and contact point. Practice against one attack instead of trying to parry an entire moveset at once.
- Test eligibility. If a parry fails, determine whether the timing was wrong or whether the attack or enemy is outside the parry rules.
- Reserve the resource you need next. In a stamina game, avoid spending the entire bar if you need a defensive action. In a game using Spirit Emblems, decide whether the special move is worth its charge.
- Confirm the reward. After a successful defense, identify whether the game grants a critical hit, posture progress, a guaranteed follow-up or only a brief chance to resume attacking.
Why a parry attempt fails
- Wrong action: You pressed ordinary guard or another skill instead of the equipped parry input.
- Wrong target: The attack or enemy is not parryable under that game’s rules.
- Wrong phase: The input did not overlap the attack’s active timing window.
- Insufficient result: The parry succeeded, but one parry was not enough to break the enemy’s stance.
- Resource exhaustion: A stamina or special-move resource reached its limit, preventing the action you expected.
- Animation commitment: A prior attack was still committed, so the defensive input could not take effect immediately.
Troubleshoot in that order: confirm the equipped skill, repeat the same enemy attack, watch the tell, leave room for the defensive input, and check whether the game requires multiple successful parries or accumulated stance damage.
Comparison checklist: Elden Ring versus Sekiro
| Comparison axis | Elden Ring | Sekiro |
|---|---|---|
| Primary example of resource management | Stamina regenerates over time; actions that consume it are unavailable at zero. | The cited mechanics guide emphasizes posture and separately identifies Spirit Emblems for some Combat Arts; an Elden Ring-style stamina rule is not established here. |
| How sequences are built | Weapon-specific normal and heavy patterns, with movement-dependent attacks. | Ordinary attacks can be augmented by equipped Combat Arts. |
| Defensive opening | A parry can repel eligible melee attacks; accumulated stance damage can also expose an enemy. | Posture is the defining pressure concept in the official mechanics explanation. |
| Special-move cost | Not stated as a general cost for every weapon skill in the cited guides. | Some Combat Arts consume Spirit Emblems. |
| Relationship noted by Miyazaki | Stance break is described as similar to Sekiro’s posture system. | Similarity does not make the controls or resources interchangeable. |
The key takeaway for players
Learn the game in front of you, not an imagined universal melee system. In Elden Ring, stamina limits selected actions, weapon inputs produce different attack branches, and parries work only against eligible attacks under the game’s rules. In Sekiro, posture and equipped Combat Arts shape a different combat loop. Once you know the local resource, input and opening rules, practice becomes a repeatable process instead of guessing at a supposedly universal combo or parry window.
