The original Mego Spider-Man is an 8-inch figure from the World’s Greatest Super Heroes line, generally dated circa 1973–74. Modern Mego-branded Spider-Man figures borrow that line’s packaging language but are newly produced figures with different construction and articulation. A vintage-looking box alone does not establish that a figure is an original.
For a reliable comparison, identify the manufacturer first, then check the body and joints, costume construction, accessories, packaging, and the seller’s disclosure of reproduction or replacement parts. Those checks separate an original Mego Corporation figure from a modern Mego release and from unrelated Mego-style products.

At a glance: three products collectors commonly confuse
| Product | Manufacturer and period | Scale and articulation | Costume and accessories | Packaging and availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original World’s Greatest Super Heroes Spider-Man | Mego Corporation; circa 1973–74. Mego Museum dates the fall additions to 1973, while Marty Abrams’s company history says 1974. | Approximately 8 inches. The cited historical sources do not state a single articulation count. Bodies may use Type I metal-rivet joints or Type II plastic joints. | Classic Spider-Man design on a vintage Mego body. Exact original accessory contents depend on the issue and completeness; inspect the actual figure and package rather than assuming a standard bundle. | Early line packaging included window boxes and Kresge cards; Mego’s timeline records a move to blister cards in 1977. Packaging is an era clue, not proof of authenticity. |
| Modern Mego Spider-Man, Green Goblin, Lizard and Electro set | Mego-branded modern release sold as a Disney Store exclusive; listing date not stated. | Approximately 8 inches; the product page lists 26 articulation points per figure. | Removable silkscreen costumes and replica vintage accessories. | Vintage-style Mego packaging. The listing showed the set out of stock when accessed; stock can change. |
| Modern Mego Symbiote Spider-Man, Doctor Octopus, Rhino and Mysterio set | Mego-branded modern release; listing date not stated. | Approximately 8 inches; the product page lists 26 articulation points per figure. | Removable silkscreen costumes and replica vintage accessories. | Vintage-style packaging. The listing showed the set out of stock when accessed; stock and pricing are volatile. |
| Legendary Marvel Super Heroes #001 Spider-Man | Diamond Select; 2015 retro-style release, not a Mego Corporation reissue. | Approximately 20 cm (8 inches); product archive lists 13 articulation points. | Early circular chest-logo styling, alternate Peter Parker and modern-costume components, camera and newspaper. | Retro presentation, but its manufacturer and product line are separate from Mego’s. |
The comparison is most useful when like is compared with like. A complete boxed vintage figure, a loose figure missing accessories, and a four-figure modern multipack are different collecting propositions even when all are described as 8-inch Spider-Man products.

Mego created the World’s Greatest Super Heroes line in 1972. Mego Museum’s history says the company adapted Action Jackson bodies, adding new heads and familiar superhero costumes. Spider-Man joined the line alongside Captain America and Tarzan in the fall additions that Mego Museum dates to 1973.

Marty Abrams’s retrospective company history gives 1974 for the addition of Tarzan, Shazam, Spider-Man and Captain America. Neither source supplies a dated catalog or package that settles why the years differ. The safest collector description is therefore circa 1973–74, unless a specific dated catalog, package, or documented sales record establishes a narrower date for the example in hand.
The broader context matters: the 8-inch licensed Marvel and DC figures became a major part of Mego’s business, and the company closed in 1982. The latter points come from a retrospective company account, not an independently audited sales history, so they explain the line’s place in Mego’s catalog rather than proving a particular figure’s authenticity.
Why the date discrepancy should not be treated as a contradiction
A toy can have separate dates for announcement, catalog appearance, factory production, retailer shipment, and consumer availability. The two cited histories do not identify which event each year represents. Calling the Spider-Man “a 1973 figure” or “a 1974 figure” without qualification overstates what the evidence establishes. “Circa 1973–74” preserves the documented history while leaving room for those different dating conventions.
How modern Mego-branded Spider-Man sets differ
Spider-Man, Green Goblin, Lizard and Electro
The first modern set contains four figures: Spider-Man, Green Goblin, Lizard and Electro. The Disney Store description places them at approximately 8 inches and specifies vintage-style Mego packaging, removable silkscreen costumes, replica vintage accessories and 26 articulation points.
Those specifications describe the modern product itself. They do not show that its joints, fabrics, head sculpts or assembly methods are identical to a 1970s Mego figure. The package is designed to evoke the earlier line, but the product page identifies it as a modern release. The listing showed the set out of stock when accessed; that observation is a snapshot, not a prediction of permanent scarcity.

Symbiote Spider-Man, Doctor Octopus, Rhino and Mysterio
The second modern set contains Symbiote Spider-Man, Doctor Octopus, Rhino and Mysterio. Its listing gives the same approximate 8-inch scale, 26 articulation points, removable silkscreen costumes, replica accessories and vintage-style packaging.
Symbiote Spider-Man also makes the set visually distinct from a package containing the familiar red-and-blue character. Check the character lineup before buying: a seller’s use of “Mego Spider-Man” may refer to either set or to an individual figure removed from a multipack. The listing likewise showed the set out of stock when accessed, so availability should be verified directly rather than inferred from an old product page.

What “26 articulation points” does—and does not—tell you
The 26-point figure count is a retailer-listed specification for each modern set. It indicates a substantially articulated modern product, but it is not a laboratory comparison with an original body. The historical material does not provide a matching articulation count for the 1970s Spider-Man, and the number of points alone cannot authenticate a figure.
Diamond Select’s 2015 retro figure is a different product
Diamond Select’s Legendary Marvel Super Heroes #001 Spider-Man, documented in a 2015 Hot Toys Japan product archive, is often grouped with Mego-style retro figures because it uses an approximately 8-inch format and vintage-inspired presentation. It is not a Mego Corporation release and should not be described as a Mego reissue.
The archive lists approximately 20 cm (8 inches) and 13 articulation points. The figure uses the early circular chest-logo style and includes alternate Peter Parker and modern-costume components, a camera and a newspaper. Those accessories and the alternate parts are useful identifiers when a loose figure has been separated from its packaging.

For listings, write the manufacturer and line explicitly: “Diamond Select 2015 Legendary Marvel Super Heroes #001 Spider-Man.” Calling it simply “Mego” can mislead buyers about origin, construction and collectibility.

How to tell an original from a modern release
Collectors frequently ask, “How do I tell if it’s the reissue or the original?” There is no single mark that answers that question for every boxed or loose Spider-Man. Use several observations together, and treat each as evidence rather than a pass/fail test.
- Confirm the manufacturer and product identity. Determine whether the item is an original Mego Corporation World’s Greatest Super Heroes figure, a modern Mego-branded set, or a Mego-style product from another manufacturer such as Diamond Select. A vintage-style package can belong to a modern product.
- Inspect the body joints. Mego Museum’s general body guide distinguishes Type I bodies with metal-rivet joints from Type II bodies with plastic joints. Photograph the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee areas on a loose figure. Do not apply the rule “all originals have metal rivets”: boxed figures could use either body type.
- Read head and body markings together. Copyright dates on the head and body may differ because the body can predate the head sculpt. A mismatch is therefore a clue to investigate, not automatic proof of a fake or reissue. Ask for sharp photographs of every visible marking.
- Examine costume construction and seams. Compare the fabric, printing, stitching, closures and fit with documented examples of the claimed issue. Modern Mego listings specifically describe removable silkscreen costumes; the presence of a removable printed costume identifies a construction feature, not by itself a date.
- Inventory every accessory. Separate original accessories, later replacements and reproductions. A complete modern set has replica vintage accessories by design, while a loose vintage figure may be incomplete. Request photographs of each accessory rather than relying on a generic checklist.
- Evaluate the packaging as a date clue. Mego Museum records window boxes and Kresge cards for the 1973 line additions and a shift from window boxes to blister cards in 1977. Packaging can help place an item in the line’s chronology, but boxes and cards can be swapped, reproduced or paired with the wrong figure.
- Ask for disclosure in writing. Request clear images of joints, head and body markings, costume seams, accessories, card or box, and any restoration, replacement or reproduction parts. Mego Museum’s collector guidance says sellers and buyers should identify reproduction parts honestly. A seller who cannot answer basic questions should not be treated as having established originality.
These checks are strongest together. A body type, a copyright date, a package style or a familiar head sculpt can narrow possibilities, but none is a universal authentication certificate.
Packaging: useful chronology, weak authentication by itself
The early World’s Greatest Super Heroes period is associated in Mego Museum’s timeline with retailer-friendly window boxes and Kresge cards. The same timeline records a switch to blister cards in 1977. That makes packaging valuable for identifying the era a package was designed for, especially when the card or box has clear printing and an intact product layout.
It remains a mistake to treat packaging as conclusive. Original figures may have been removed from boxes, boxes may have been replaced, and modern products deliberately reproduce the visual language of the vintage line. Inspect the figure, body and accessories even when the package looks convincingly old. Conversely, a loose figure is not automatically less authentic; it simply provides fewer contextual clues.

Body, costume and accessory differences in practical collecting
| Inspection area | Original 1970s Mego | Modern Mego sets | Diamond Select 2015 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body system | Type I metal-rivet and Type II plastic-joint bodies are both documented in Mego’s general body guide. Exact body assignment must be checked on the example. | Modern articulated body; product pages list 26 points. | Product archive lists 13 points. |
| Costume | Vintage Spider-Man costume on the historical Mego body; the supplied historical sources do not establish one universal material specification for every issue. | Removable silkscreen costumes are specified by the retailer. | Early circular chest-logo styling, with alternate Peter Parker and modern-costume components. |
| Accessories | Completeness varies by the individual figure and package. Verify against the actual issue and disclose substitutions. | Replica vintage accessories included in the described sets. | Camera and newspaper, plus alternate costume-related components. |
| Scale | 8-inch World’s Greatest Super Heroes format. | Approximately 8 inches. | Approximately 20 cm (8 inches). |
The table shows why “8-inch Spider-Man” is not a sufficient identification. Three products can share the nominal scale while differing in maker, joint count, costume system and accessory package.

Vintage value depends heavily on condition, completeness, geography and whether the figure is loose, carded or boxed. No current secondary-market price survey establishes a universal price for an original Spider-Man, so a single asking price should not be presented as a market standard.
When comparing listings, match the following variables:
- Manufacturer and issue: Original Mego, modern Mego, and Diamond Select are separate products.
- Contents: Compare a complete figure with the same accessories and alternate parts, not a complete multipack with a loose figure.
- Packaging: Record whether the original card, box or blister is present, replaced, restored or absent.
- Condition: Ask about paint wear, rubbed printing, split seams, loose joints, discoloration and repairs.
- Geography and currency: Shipping, import costs and regional distribution can change the practical price.
- Disclosure: Require explicit statements about reproduction parts, replacement costumes and restored packaging.
A modern four-pack’s price, when listed, should not be compared directly with a loose vintage figure. The products contain different numbers of figures, different accessories and different scarcity risks. Compare like-for-like examples before drawing a value conclusion.
Which version suits which collector?
Choose an original Mego if historical authenticity is the priority
An original circa 1973–74 World’s Greatest Super Heroes Spider-Man is the choice for collectors focused on Mego’s original Marvel licensing period, vintage body construction and period packaging. Expect more uncertainty: condition varies widely, accessories may be missing, and the Type I/Type II body distinction means a single joint rule cannot settle every case.

Choose a modern Mego set for a coordinated display
The modern Mego sets provide multiple characters at the same approximate scale, 26 listed articulation points and replica accessories in vintage-style packaging. They are practical when you want a consistent, poseable display without representing the figures as 1970s originals.
Choose Diamond Select when its design and extras are the attraction
The 2015 Diamond Select figure fits a retro-style collection but has its own identity: 13 listed articulation points, circular-logo styling, alternate Peter Parker and modern-costume components, a camera and a newspaper. Buy it as a Diamond Select product, not as a substitute description for a Mego Corporation original.
A buyer’s photo request that prevents most misunderstandings
Before purchasing a loose or boxed Spider-Man, ask the seller for one set of high-resolution photographs showing the front and back of the figure, all joints, the head and body markings, costume seams and closures, every accessory, and all sides of the card or box. Ask the seller to identify anything replaced, reproduced, repaired or restored. Keep those answers with the listing record.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis process does not guarantee authentication, but it converts vague claims such as “old Mego” or “vintage reissue” into evidence that can be checked against the product identity and construction described above.
